Binkley in sulky for final-day win
By JG/T-C staff sports@jg-tc.com
CHARLESTON -- After attending a friend’s funeral, Charleston’s Clark Fairley got back to the Coles County Fair in time for some good news.
Judson Director, co-owned by Clark’s brother Hal, his father Ron and twin daughters Lacey and Haley while trained by Clark, won the Topline 3-year-old pace’s second division Friday in the windup of this week’s harness racing at the fair.
Charleston’s Larry Binkley came through as the substitute driver with a win in 1 minute, 57 1/5 seconds.
This is the 5-year-old gelding’s second win in 15 starts this year after getting seven wins a year ago.
“I was pretty confident he could win it or get second,” Clark Fairley said. “He’s been a pretty nice horse. I bought him 2 ½ years ago. He had a super year last year and now he’s coming back around.”
Jamaica Patton drove Silly Britches to victory in the first division of the 3-year-old pace, clocking a time of 1:58 1/5 seconds. It was one of three straight wins for Patton – he also drove Picking Up Chicks and Merry Moneymaker to victories.
Adam Knicley won on Lady’s Last Stand, Kermit Travis triumphed with Fantastic Tori, Darla Martin with Crossword and Terry Skinner drove Miss Queen B to victory during the last race of the day, the Illini 2-year-old pace, which featured the largest overall purse ($7,052).
