Graduating Clark Co. 4-H'ers
taking experiences with them

MARSHALL — The young adults in Clark County 4-H’s class of 2009 will take years of valuable experience with them when they leave the program this summer.

Some of these 4-H members wrapped up their 4-H time on Wednesday, the closing day of the annual Clark County 4-H Fair, held this year at the Marshall fairgrounds.

Austin Cox, 19, of Casey said his work on 4-H general projects will be a great aid to him at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville as he begins studying to become a dentist.

Cox said the insect collections he has compiled have readied him for biological science courses. He said the model rockets and cars he has assembled have helped prepare him for someday making dental imprints from clay molds and working with dental tools.

“Really, it has been leading into what I want to do,” Cox said.

Meghan Applegate, 19, of Casey, who plans to attend Lake Land College, said presenting her 4-H projects to judges and working with her 4-H club have improved her communication and leadership skills.

“I am not so shy now. It has given me a lot of help with that,” said Applegate, whose experiences include geology, horticulture and visual arts projects.

Both Applegate and Phillip Vice, 19, of Dennison were taking part Wednesday in their last Clark County 4-H Fair poultry show, the last of many for them. Applegate said she has won every plaque but the breeding pair over the years and Vice said he has won every plaque except for the pullet one.

Vice, who is enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College, said being in 4-H has given him social skills as well as competitive skills that will help him vie for jobs in the work force.

While this is their last summer in 4-H, the three youths said they plan to stay involved in the program during the years to come.

Cox said he will help his siblings, 11-year-old twins Adam and Chelsea, with their model rockets and other general projects. Vice said he hopes to become a judge for the poultry shows. Applegate said she is scheduled to serve as a superintendent during the poultry show at next year’s fair.

“I think it will be fun to still be in the show to help little kids and teach them,” Applegate said.

Other Clark County 4-H members completing the program this year include Allie Bender of Marshall, Ty Boyd of Casey, Kacey Brandenburg of Casey, Nathan Crews of Marshall, Andy Guinnip of Marshall, Tyler Howard of Marshall, Jessica Lewis of Marshall, D.J. Sanders of Martinsville, Kyle Swalls of Marshall, Lindsay Vanatta of Casey/Greenup, and Cortney Williams of Martinsville.
