American Legion state baseball tournament begins Wednesday
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS --The Senior American Legion State Tournament is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Wednesday with a first-round game between Elk Grove Post 216 and Rock Island Post 200. Games between Barrington Post 158 and Belleville Post 262 and Mattoon Post 88 and host Palatine Post 690 will follow Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Elk Grove (27-11) won the Cook County Tournament against Arlington Heights Post 208 to advance to the double-elimination state tournament at Lloyd Meyer Field at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights. Rock Island (26-4) won the Third Division Tournament. Post 200, which is 6-0 in postseason play this year, is making its first trip back to the state tournament since 2007.
Barrington (18-9) won the District 10 Tournament and advanced to and won the Second Division Tournament in Wheaton. Barrington beat host team Wheaton 4-3 to advance to its first state tournament appearance since 1998. Tyler Tureck and Chris Rogers combined to pitch nine innings for Barrington’s win. Tureck scattered four hits in 6-plus innings, while striking out six Wheaton batters. Rogers pitched the rest of the game for the save.
Belleville, the defending state champions, won the Fifth Division Tournament with an 11-7 victory against Alton Post 354 on Friday. Belleville (30-3) trailed Alton 7-3 through 6 2/3 innings but rallied for the win with a two-out, five-run seventh inning. Luke Matecki drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh with an RBI double after Rob Beatty (RBI single), Tony Kossina (two-RBI double) and Joe Bendick (RBI groundout) all drove in runs to cut into Alton’s lead.
Mattoon (34-2) beat Danville Post 210 3-2 in the championship game of the Fourth Division Tournament on Sunday in Paris to advance to the state tournament. Chase Louthan scored the game-winning run for Post 88 in the top of the ninth inning to send Mattoon to the state tournament for the first time since 2003. Palatine (21-7) received an invitation to play in the state tournament as the host team of the tournament.
The winner of the state tournament will advance to the Great Lakes Region Tournament, held from August 6-10, at Don Hawkins Field in Appleton, Wis. Teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Indiana will round out the Region field with the winner advancing to the American Legion Baseball World Series in Fargo, N.D.
