Post 88 blasts Danville, advances to title game
By SCOTT RICHEY, Staff Writer sports@jg-tc.com
PARIS -- Mattoon Post 88 designated hitter Vince Anello drove in two runs when he lined a 1-2 pitch into right field after fouling off three consecutive offerings from Danville Post 210 pitcher J.D. Learnard in the third inning.
Post 88 first baseman Tyler Brandenburg followed Anello’s single with one of his own to nearly the exact same place in right field, and Anello advanced to third base on the hit. Chase Louthan continued the opposite field hit trend when he singled home Anello to give Mattoon a 5-0 lead.
Anello kept up the opposite field hits in the fourth inning when he drove in Cody Gass on another line drive single to right field. Jeremy Jordan scored on the same play as Anello’s hit, but the run was unearned after Danville’s right fielder misplayed the ball.
Mattoon scored insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings en route to the 14-4 win that pushed them to the Senior American Legion Fourth Division championship game today at Laker Field in Paris. Post 88 will play the winner of Danville and Paris Post 211, which is scheduled for noon. The championship game will follow.
Post 88 did have a few hits to someplace other than right field with an RBI single up the middle from Jordan and infield singles from Jordan, Gass and catcher Hunter Davis. Louthan, though, lined a double to right field in the seventh inning after a few hits in a row that didn’t go to the opposite field.
Cory Ames was Post 88’s starting pitcher and threw eight innings while allowing four runs, one of which came on a solo home run from Danville catcher Chuck Robinson. Ames struck out 10 Post 210 batters while walking just four.
Jordan led Post 88 in hits (four), runs scored (four) and RBIs (four). Jordan took the RBI lead from Anello, who had three RBIs for the game, with a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. Marshall Creed also homered for Post 88 with a two-run shot over the left-center field fence in the eighth inning.
