Davis, Sewell win national weightlifting titles

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Kari Davis won her fourth straight USA Weightlifting Schoolage Weightlifting championships title the past weekend.

The Westfield girl led 11 lifters from this area completing in the Schoolage nationals that had most of the stats represented by those achieving qualifying totals.

Also winning a division title was Nathan Sewell.

Davis of the Charleston Recreation Department Weightlifting Club made lifts of 181 pounds in the snatch and 226 in the clean-and-jerk for another victory in her last Schoolage national meet. She never lost to anyone in her age group while 17-and-under.

Davis had returned from Thailand a few weeks earlier where she finished 16th in the first ever Youth World Weightlifting Championships.

Davis was recovering form an injury and did 174 pounds in the snatch there and 211 in the clean and jerk.

Nathan Sewell, age 11, won the 13-and-under 77 pounds class with lifts of 77 in the snatch and 108 in the clean and jerk. Sewell won his class by over 30 pounds and, using a formula to compare lifters of different weights, was the second best lifter in the 13-and-under division.

Sewell also lifts for the Charleston Parks and Recreation Department Weightlifting Club whose coach Marty Schnorf said, “Nathan had been second the last two years. He has two more years in that age group and could easily win another title or two. Mark Davis has been coaching Nathan and Kari most of the time up in Westfield the last few months, and deserves credit for their success.“

Wes Parish, representing Team Body Club of Charleston, won second place in the 14-15 age division’s 97-pound class. He snatched 75 pounds and clean-and-jerked 112. He cleaned 126 which would have won his class but missed the jerk.

“Wes was close on that lift, which would have won the national championship for him,“ said Jim Dinaso, coach of Team Body Club. “This was his first national meet, so it was a good showing for him.“

Winning third places were Aislinn Parish, TBC, and Colton Sewell, CWLC. Parish, age 11, lifted in the 77-pound 13-and-under division and made lifts of 42 pounds in the snatch and 60 in the clean-and-jerk. She only weighed 55 pounds.

Colton Sewell lifted in the 14-15 age division’s 137-pound class even though he is just 13. A lifter’s age is based on their age at the end of the year, so Colton is considered 14 because he turns 14 late this year.

Colton made lifts of 150 in the snatch and 209 in the clean-and-jerk. He cleaned 220 for second place but missed the jerk.

“This was one of the toughest classes in the meet,” Schnorf said.

Laura Southards, CWLC, finished fourth in the 14-15 division’s 105-pound class. She made 74 pounds in the snatch and 106 in the clean-and-jerk. She cleaned 110 pounds which would have placed her third but was unable to jerk it overhead.

Two more lifters from Team Body Club finished fifth — sisters Janelle and Shannon Parish. Janelle, age 10, made lifts of 29 and 44 pounds, respectively, in finishing fifth in the 13-and-under 77-pound class. Shannon finished fifth in the 16-17’s 105-pound class. She was the lightest lifter in her class, and made lifts of 68 in the snatch and 101 in the clean-and-jerk. This was the first national championships for both of them.

Brett Pfeiffer, age 10, finished 6th in the 77-pound class for 13-and-under. The second youngest lifter in his weight class, he made lifts of 55 in the snatch and 66 in the clean-and-jerk.

Riley Parish, TBC, finished sixth in the 16-17’s 117-pound class. She made lifts of 71 and 90 in the snatch and clean-and-jerk.

John Southards, TBC, finished 10th in the 13-and-under 77-pound class with lifts of 31 in the snatch and 44 in the clean-and-jerk. He was the second lightest in his class.

Eight of the 11 lifters were lifting in their first ever national championships of any kind. Based off that, Jim Dinaso, Team Body Club head coach, said he was very pleased.

“Everyone made weight, made a total, and handled the pressure of a national meet well,” Dinaso said. “I want to give credit to Maranda Rehg and Joe Molter for their help in training the kids. Aislinn especially impressed people with her lifting at her size. Brett Pfeiffer also lifted very well in his first national meet. Charleston had a very large presence at this meet.”

Schnorf said four lifters will probably travel later this month to the AAU National Junior Olympic Weightlifting Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, where Aislinn, Riley and Shannon Parish from Team Body Club, along with Brett Pfeiffer of CWLC are expected to compete.

Dinaso said: “There is an 11-and-under age group there and we expect Brett and Aislinn will fare better there against kids their own ages. They also have lighter weight classes, which will help Brett and Aislinn.“
