Students receive scholarships from Lumpkin Pioneer Club



MATTOON — Ten area students recently received scholarships totaling $6,500 from the Iverson A. Lumpkin Pioneer Club at a reception held recently at Consolidated Communications.

The Mattoon-based chapter of the Pioneer Club is part of the national Telecommunications Pioneers organization and includes employees and retirees of Consolidated Communications. Since 1990, the club has awarded more than $93,750 in scholarships to some 140 students.

To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be a child or grandchild of a club member, have a 3.0 grade-point average and be enrolling in a two- or four-year accredited college.

The recipients of the 2009 Iverson A. Lumpkin Pioneer Club scholarships were: 

-- Kyle Connerly of Effingham, a graduate of St. Anthony High School with plans to attend Lake Land College. He is the son of Brad and Laura Connerly.

-- Michelle Dasenbrock of Effingham, a graduate of St. Anthony High School, and the daughter of Bernice Dasenbrock and Dan Dasenbrock. She plans to attend Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

-- Haley Cottet of Mattoon. She is a graduate of Mattoon High School and plans to attend Lake Land College. She is the daughter of Steve and Chris Cottet.

-- Alyssa Galioto of Mattoon. She is a graduate of Mattoon High School who plans to attend Lake Land College. She is the daughter of Kyla Orr.

-- Myles Womack of Mattoon. He is a graduate of Mattoon High School and plans to attend the University of Illinois. He is the son of Stacy and Ellen Womack.

-- John Hagan of Mattoon. A graduate of Mattoon High School, he will be attending the University of Phoenix. He is the son of Mike and Margy Hagan.

-- Chase Louthan of Mattoon, a graduate of Mattoon High School with plans to attend Lake Land College. He is the son of Gary and Karen Louthan.

-- Mackenzie Floyd of Mattoon. A graduate of Mattoon High School, she will be attending Illinois Wesleyan University. She is the daughter of Scott Floyd, and Patty and Randy Peterson, and granddaughter of retiree Carol O’Neill.

-- Mark Burton of Moweaqua. He is a graduate of Central A&M High School and plans to attend Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He is the son of David and Peggy Burton and the grandson of retiree Carol O’Neill.

-- Austin Park of Elburn. He is a graduate of Kaneland High School and will be attending Wabash Valley Community College. He is the son of Mark and Karen Park and grandson of Dean and Joyce Marshall.
