LETTER: Other nations must set their own course
AMBER BLEVINS, Charleston
Self-determination is a key to any successful democratic society. The change must come from the people in order for it to sustain itself.
We have seen time and again (Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba) that attempting to impose democracy on a people who are not ready for it is unrealistic and often disastrous.
Like our own American Revolution, other nations need the ability to determine their own course, throw off their own oppressors, and govern themselves.
We would not have wanted another, more powerful nation, interfering, controlling, or taking credit for the rights and freedoms we fought for.
The brave Iranian people standing up now do not want us stepping in either. They should have the right to take credit for their own successes or failures and determine where to go from here.
The only thing Americans should be doing at this point is setting a shining example of what they could have if they fight hard enough. We finally have a president who understands this concept and is stepping back to allow the people of Iran to steer their own course.
They do not want our advice or support at this point, and in light of the political climate in the Middle East, they are probably better off without it.
I say to the critics who feel we should be doing more; sometimes doing nothing is the correct course. If democracy is truly the greatest form of government, then people will embrace it and fight for it when they are ready.
But nations are, in a sense, like individuals who always appreciate more the things they work for than that which is handed to them.
Perhaps America is growing up and realizing that we cannot solve the world’s problems, nor should we try.
