LETTER: Other nations must set their own course

AMBER BLEVINS, Charleston

Self-determination is a key to any successful democratic society. The change must come from the people in order for it to sustain itself.

We have seen time and again (Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba) that attempting to impose democracy on a people who are not ready for it is unrealistic and often disastrous.

Like our own American Revolution, other nations need the ability to determine their own course, throw off their own oppressors, and govern themselves.

We would not have wanted another, more powerful nation, interfering, controlling, or taking credit for the rights and freedoms we fought for.

The brave Iranian people standing up now do not want us stepping in either. They should have the right to take credit for their own successes or failures and determine where to go from here.

The only thing Americans should be doing at this point is setting a shining example of what they could have if they fight hard enough. We finally have a president who understands this concept and is stepping back to allow the people of Iran to steer their own course.

They do not want our advice or support at this point, and in light of the political climate in the Middle East, they are probably better off without it.

I say to the critics who feel we should be doing more; sometimes doing nothing is the correct course. If democracy is truly the greatest form of government, then people will embrace it and fight for it when they are ready.

But nations are, in a sense, like individuals who always appreciate more the things they work for than that which is handed to them.

Perhaps America is growing up and realizing that we cannot solve the world’s problems, nor should we try.

If we was ran under a murderess dictatorship I would hope someone would help us. You can look at it like a child or special needs person, they can not do it they need the help. "

Good point Becky. Due to the Iraq war and his Halliburton stock options, Dick Cheney is among the wealthiest of all politicians. But of course Cheney had nothing to so with the push to invade Iraq. Lol! "

I don't care for the guy, kam. He's just a tad unstable for my tastes. Huckabee is about the only pundit on Fox that I can stand to watch for more than 10 minutes.

While I usually don't agree with him, Pat Buchanan is one conservative that I enjoy watching. Joe Scarborough is palatable for the most part too.

When it come to conservative
politicians, Barry Goldwater will always have a place in my heart, not for his politics, but for his wit and charm. That and the fact that he once handed my wife a yellow rose. How could I not love the guy after that?

With the death of William Buckley, there is a great void among the conservative thinkers in this country. That fact seems to be proved with a poll I saw this morning saying 75 percent of Republicans are behind Sarah Palin. It's really sad to see that the GOP in this country has become a joke now that they appear to be lead by Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin. "

Granted he can "cut to the bone" but so can others here. At least he has a sense of humor and when push comes to shove he has agreed with the "opposition" on more than one occasion, even you Tom when he felt it was the right thing to do . He and I have "gone 'round and 'round" more than once.

Many of us may remember awhile back when our post names were being stolen by some troll who knew how to do this. I don't think the JG-TC ever figured out how this troll did it. It happened to me and others. Some changed their post names after this in an attempt to stop this.

I think Harry did the right thing by "fessing up" for lack of a better term to 7X's little expose'. He kind of threw a wet blanket on it. To those who want to use multiple names, have at it. It really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I for one consider Harry a friend as well as some others here than I disagree with. I think of you as a friend too Tom and we DO agree more often than not. How dull it would be if everyone thought alike. We're free to express ourselves here. Not so in many places in the world. We need to be thankful for that . "

" ADN Confirms: Palin's Story Doesn't Hold up.

Greg Sargent reported on The Plum Line that one of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's key reasons for resigning -- that ethics complaints against her were draining the state of money -- appeared to be false.

In response to our questions, the Governor's office provided us with a detailed breakdown of the millions Palin has claimed has gone to defending against ethics complaints. It does list roughly $1.9 million in expenditures.

But Murrow, the spokesperson, acknowledged to our reporter, Amanda Erickson, that this total was arrived at by adding up attorney hours spent on fending off complaints -- based on the fixed salaries of lawyers in the governor's office and the Department of Law. The money would have gone to the lawyers no matter what they were doing. The complaints are "just distracting them from other duties," Murrow said.

In other words, while these lawyers might have been free to do other legal work for the state, the ethics complaints have apparently not had the real world impact Palin has claimed, and didn't drain money away from cops, teachers, roads and other things.

The Anchorage Daily News did a thorough analysis and backed up the spokesperson. The ethics complaints took up time that staff could have spent doing other work, but they did not cost Alaska any money.

Looks like Palin suffers from Pinocchio syndrome, Tom. Or was she just too stupid to understand how things work? Given her overall lack of understanding about things like the federal goverment (Department of Law) The Bush Doctrine (Deer in headlight reaction), world geography (Africa is a country) etc, I suspect it's the stupid factor coming into play here. Also, don't forget the American Revolution as we know it never would have been successful without the support of foreign influences.

So what are the "significant actions" that these seven lawmakers insist were kept from Congress? Another theory being bandied about concerns an "executive assassination ring" that was allegedly set up and answered to former Vice President Dick Cheney. The New Yorker's Seymour Hersh, building off earlier reporting from the New York Times, dropped news of the possibility that such a ring existed in a March 2009 discussion sponsored by the University of Minnesota.
Sam Stein-

If this story turns out to be true, even Fox news won't be able to defend Cheney, as they so often do. I still maintain the Cheney will ultimately wind up before a judge for his actions. It will be entertaining to watch the right wingers try to justify Cheney's actions if this is proven, after all they were willing to overlook human torture from the Bush/Cheney regime. "

HP is your use of We the royal we (your group of nom de plumes) or is it just your little group of liberal play pals on this site (all five or six of them)?

See, I am confused because you and your pals sound and think so much alike it is hard to tell you all apart.

HP, fb, and that Lakeland kid almost drove me nuts a few months back on this topic when they harassed BDD and a couple of others and I hate to see it come up again.

I understand the great irony in HP, FB, Dobaugh, or what ever going on and on and accusing others of doing it. We always hate our own sins the worst when we see them in others.

Besides, it allows those who use it (like HP, FB, etc.) to support themselves and not have to use logic and facts that relate to the thread.

OR as is his more usual tactic to steal or deflect the thread away from some inconvenient facts or points a fellow poster made to some meaningless drivel about Fox, Murdock, Palin, what some name a fellow forum member uses or something else far from the topic in play.

Nope, I would rather spend time on the real problems- you know HP how your beloved community organizer and the current rouges controlling congress have destroyed so many of our countys foundations in just six months!

Since you are on this site almost constently I must assume you are a man of leausre. I sure hope your leaving a lot to any kids or grandkids you might have because they are going to need it to pay off this mess YOUR guys have made.

Oh- I know your standard answer is all this is the Bush clown IIs fault right?

Hum your clown outspends his record spending by a factor of 4, doesnt stimulate anything with his stimulus plans except the banking elites bonuses and his community organizing friends, side steps congressional controls and appoints czars all over the place, illegally takes control of major portions of our free enterprise sectors, destroys the underpinnings of a free bond market, doesnt make a single change to the Homeland Security abomination but it is the past clowns fault.

Well, we are seeing green shoots right?

Oh, thats right they also lied about that. "
