MATTOON -- Moultrie-Douglas County American Legion Post 479-429-27’s baseball team scored all five of its runs in the second and third innings and the pitching of Adam Carver, Paul Hrvol and Tyler Frerichs held Danville Post 210 to two runs as MDC won 5-2 Thursday at Lake Land College.
MDC scored three in the second when Ed Leal singled, Chris Marrs doubled and Ben Smith drove both in with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
In the third Dillon Hoel singled, Hrvol doubled and both runners scored on fielder’s choices by Leal and Frerichs.
Marrs, a Sullivan graduate, led MDC with two hits.
Danville fell to 18-12, while MDC improved to 10-12 ahead of Saturday’s one nine inning game at Grimes Field at Peterson Park.
“Danville is one of the better teams in our division (fourth),” said MDC coach Travis Wilson. “They are not in our district. They have a good program.”
Kaskaskia bound southpaw Adam Carver, an Arthur grad, had six strikeouts in three innings and Hrvol, who improved to 3-1 with the win, had two strikeouts as both threw 48 and 58 pitches respectively. Frerichs, who is headed to Lincoln Land and is a Sullivan grad along with Hrvol, threw 56 pitches and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth and struck out the final two batters with one runner on in the ninth.
The last time these two teams met Danville won 17-6.
“We used multiple pitchers today and plan to Saturday and go about the game the same way,” said Wilson. “We want the kids to get some at-bats before the district tournament next week. That is what we are aiming for.”
