Back-to-back homers highlight Mattoon Cal Ripken win
By MIKE MONAHAN, Staff Writer mmonahan@jg-tc.com
MATTOON -- Austin Warrem, Carson Hyland and Tanner Scott combined to allow just one hit and Mattoon opened play in the Cal Ripken 12-year-old State Tournament (South division) with a 15-4 victory over Wabash Valley of Oblong at Lawson Park.
Mattoon had 10 hits and took advantage of six errors to win in a game called after three and a half innings due to the 10-run rule. Mattoon is to play Charleston at 5 p.m. today, while Wabash Valley awaits the loser for a 7 p.m. contest.
“Early in the game they gave us opportunities when they didn’t make a play and we took advantage,” said Mattoon coach Dave Vieth. “Austin (Warrem) came in and did a good job of throwing strikes.”
Warrem had four strikeouts in two innings and didn’t allow a hit.
Mattoon, a team that played just one game in a 6-5 loss to the Southern Storm of Pinckneyville in St. Louis out of four scheduled, already led 4-0 after one inning as Mattoon batted around. In the second inning Mattoon’s Adam Shoot led off by reaching on an error by the left fielder; Alex Gowin drew a base on balls and Shoot advanced to third on a passed ball when Payton Hartbank stepped to the plate and smacked a three-run homer over the fence in right-center field. One pitch later Warrem was circling the bases after hitting a monster shot over the fence and onto the tennis court in left field for an 8-0 lead.
“Payton and Austin hit both baseballs well,” said Vieth. “We did a good job of hitting the ball in play (just two strikeouts) and everyone got to play.”
Wabash Valley scored all four runs in the third as James Rogers reached on an error and Dalton Neblit drew a base on balls. Billy Sears reached on an error after they executed a double steal for the first run. Neblit scored on the error and Dylan Mason drew a full-count walk. The third run scored on a ground out and the final runs scored on a single to left by Brandon Redman, who was out at second trying to stretch it into a double.
Hartbank was 2-for-2 with a home run and three runs batted in, while Warrem was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs and Andy Vieth was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs for Mattoon.
Mattoon has had just four practices.
“It is still early and we are evaluating players and players are getting used to playing with each other,” said Vieth. “We will see what we can do against Charleston.”
