Artist's Day in the Garden set Saturday

CHARLESTON — The annual Artist’s Day in the Garden at Dr. Whiteside’s will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

This gathering has become a summer highlight for artists and photographers to explore the grounds of this retired botany professor and to share some shade and conversation with like-minded folks.

The public is invited to this quiet fundraiser and encouraged to come for a short while or all day. Acoustic musicians Bob and Laura St. Gemme and friends will play part of the day. Cold water and treats will be provided to participants.

This year, the organizer is encouraging people to bring canvas and paints, sketchpad and pencils or watercolors, a digital camera, a journal, or a tape recorder to capture images or sounds or vignettes.

Dr. Whiteside recently replanted many of his daylilies. In the beginning of July to mid-July, their blooms should be at their peak.

He also created a new extensive planting of carnivorous plants — Venus flytraps, sundews and pitcher plants — that is next to his front waterlily ponds.

The Coles County Arts Council sponsors this event and accepts donations of $5 from the public and $3 from its members and full-time students. Area residents are welcome to become members.

The garden is located at the corner of 1820 County Road East (Coles County) and Illinois Route 16, 1¾ miles outside of Charleston.
