Tarble Arts Center to offer August workshops for adults

CHARLESTON — Three intensive art workshops for adults (ages 15 and over) are being offered through the Tarble Arts Center, Eastern Illinois University, from Aug. 10-21.

Of special note to art teachers, the workshops may be taken for Continuing Education Units for teacher recertification. Tarble members receive a 20 percent discount on course fees. The registration deadline is Aug. 7; interested persons should contact the Tarble Arts Center at  581-ARTS (2787) or e-mail tarble@eiu.edu for a free flier.

“Mosaic Workshop” will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10-18. Using stained glass, workshop participants will design and fabricate a mosaic on a stepping stone or set of ceramic tiles. Workshop fees are $40 for Tarble members and $48 for non-members.

“Introduction to Printmaking” is scheduled for Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12-20. Participants in this workshop will explore techniques in basic linoleum block printing, as well as monoprints using botanical materials and fabric for texture and subject matter. Basic drawing and color theory will be covered in this workshop. Class fees are $50 for members and $60 for non-members.

“Photocopy Transfer Prints” will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 14 and 21. This workshop will focus on a printmaking technique that allows the user to transfer a photocopied image to paper using an etching press to create a print, which can then be combined with drawing or painting media. Workshop fees are $40 for members and $48 for non-members.

The Tarble Arts Center offers year-round community art instruction for both children and adults. Located on South Ninth Street at Cleveland Avenue, the Tarble Arts Center is partially supported by the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency, and by the Tarble Arts Center Endowment and membership contributions.
