Walk/bike trail and more under construction

MATTOON — The Roundhouse Sports Complex is drawing workers, backhoes and cement mixers this summer for several construction projects.
The longest addition will be a 1.8-mile walk/bike path around the sports area from 10th to Logan streets, said Public Works Director Dave Wortman. The work is being paid for with a $400,000 Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant previously awarded to the community, plus about $400,000 in sales tax revenue collected from the 1/4-cent kicker established by a referendum in 2003.
“We’ll have asphalt paths for most of it. But we will have a concrete surface on some of the entrances to the parking areas. About 95 percent of it will be asphalt,” said Wortman.
The new paths will serve both as a recreational option for visitors to the sports complex as well as an alternative to walking or biking in the evening in an unlighted area east of Logan Street on the biking and jogging path between Mattoon and Charleston.
“I’ve had people tell me they don’t feel comfortable going beyond Logan Street on the path. So this offers them a good loop to avoid that wooded area with little lighting,” Wortman said.
The sidewalk along North Sixth Street also offers the option for a walking or biking loop for people working up to a longer workout.
Other recreational additions to the Roundhouse area are the planned skate park and four soccer fields. Equipment will be added to the skate park this fall, but buildup of the turf on the soccer fields will delay use of those facilities until next year, according to city officials. Soccer leagues will continue using land at Kinzel Park, Wortman said.
New parking areas will use a plastic grid base between rock, sand and soil layers under grass turf. This is termed “green parking.”
“The grass goes into the soil and keeps it in place,” Wortman said. “There is less rutting for parking. And you can play on it, too.”
In addition, the city is also adding drainage to the north side of the complex.
There is a projected savings of $50,000 on the work as it progresses so far, Wortman said. He added he might propose constructing a permanent restroom building for the soccer fields next year with that potential savings.

Anyone remember the projected price for charleston highschool concession stand and bathrooms?
The city cut leaf collection, partly because the dust was bothering workers. They decided other workers can shoot guns in a metal shed. Baffling...
Who is going to mow and maintain all these new responsibilities? Where is that money, that wasn't there for other existing responsibilities going to suddenly come from? "
