ARTCo to present 'Bye, Bye, Birdie!'

TUSCOLA — The Actors’ Rural Theatre Company will present “Bye, Bye, Birdie!” for its annual summer musical.

The performances will be at Tuscola’s Community Building on July 9-12 and 16-19. Thursday through Saturday performances will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday matinees will begin at 2:30 p.m.

Ticket prices are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors/students, and $5 for those 12 and under. To reach the box office call 253-6699.

Reservations are highly suggested. Group rates (10 or more) are available with “perks” such as premiere seating, pre-show group recognition, autographed poster from the cast, one free bottled water and snack per group member, “sweet-apple” souvenir, and meet and greet with the cast (Thursdays only).

In the show, Conrad Birdie (played by Nathan Goodman, Arthur, and Nathan Knuth, Charleston), the biggest singing sensation of the 1950s, has been drafted! Teenie-boppers all over the country are crying and fainting at the thought!

Before he heads off to the army, his manager has cooked up the ultimate publicity stunt: Conrad will kiss one randomly chosen member of his fan club goodbye on a live broadcast of “The Ed Sullivan Show” after singing his latest hit “One Last Kiss.”

Little does Kim MacAfee (played by Kimberly Litchfield of Seymour and Rachel Sapp of Tuscola) of Sweet Apple, Ohio, know that her life is about to change forever when she will be lucky girl chosen to receive the nationally-televised kiss.

And when Birdie sees the charm of everyday American life that he has missed, the results are not quite what the publicist envisioned.

The role of Albert is played by newcomer Jacob Norris of Oakland, and his “Spanish Rose” is played by Casey Higgins of Tuscola. Albert’s mother, Mae, is played by Vicki Christy of Camargo and Lyn Selen of Tuscola. The MacAfee family is played by Sean Higgins of Tuscola, Stan McMorris of Charleston, Becky Hemmer of Tuscola Nancy Marlow and Chandler Kearns of Tuscola.

The show is directed by Charleston resident Scott Brooks.

“Bye, Bye, Birdie” contains musical numbers such as “An English Teacher,” “What Did I Ever See in Him?,” “Put on a Happy Face,” “One Boy,” “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “Kids,” “Rosie” and “Spanish Rose.”

This program is made possible in part by a grant from the Ruth and Vaughn Jaenike Access to the Arts Outreach Program of the College of Arts & Humanities, Eastern Illinois University. ARTCo is partially funded by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council.
