CIGS Rebels take third at State Farm Invitational

BLOOMINGTON -- The CIGS Rebel Gold 18-and-under softball team went 5-2 over the weekend and claimed third-place in the 16 team State Farm Firecracker Invitational at Bloomington.

The Rebels opened the tournament with a 7-5 win over the Midwest Energy, a team that beat the Rebels the previous weekend. Charleston’s Amy Simpson went the distance in the pitcher’s circle, giving up five runs on eight hits striking out three and walking two. Okaw Valley graduate Sam Inman went 2-for 3 with a triple and 3 RBIs to lead the offense. Simpson helped herself with two singles, Beth Pickerill doubled to lead the attack.

Next against the Lone Wolves, Jenna Harshbarger scattered seven hits and struck out four for the Rebels as they won 12-4. Sam Inman went 3-4 with two triples 5 RBI and 3 runs scored. Kim Fortney also had two triples as the LOVC reps led the way. The third member, Beth Pickerill, added two hits to the 15 hit attack. Ali Moss drove in a run as did Melissa Lamb.

In the final pool game the Rebels lost a tough 5-3 game to the Northern Ice. Charleston’s Braddi Reed only allowed one earned run, but shaky defense led to four more runs for the Ice. Down 5-1 in the sixth the Rebels rallied as Lamb singled, Kaytlin Barrett singled, Krystin Barrett singled and Ali Moss singled to make it 5-3 but the Rebels left two stranded to end the game.

On tournament Sunday the Rebels were playing without Sarah Gray and Sam Inman but defeated the LGSA Lightning 6-5 with two runs in the sixth. Jenna Harshbarger picked up the win for the Rebels and Amy Simpson drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Next in the quarterfinals the Rebels faced the Northern Illinois Lightning a team that went undefeated in Pool Play. The Rebels had their best all around game of the tournament by winning 6-0 behind Amy Simpson and timely hitting.

In the semifinals the Bloomington Angels eliminated the Rebels 9-0.

The Rebels now stand at 9-6 and are to next play at ASA State beginning July 10.
