A look at the warning signs of the potential for suicide

The Mattoon-based Regional Behavioral Health Network provides a 24-hour crisis line for people who are considering suicide but also for people concerned that someone else might be considering it.

The hot line number is 1-866-567-2400. Information on the network is available on its Web site, www.rbhn.org.

According to the RBHN and the American Association of Suicidology, the warning signs for suicide include:

Warning signs

-Talk about suicide, death or no reason to live

- Preoccupation with death and dying

- Withdrawal from friends and/or social activities

-Recent severe loss, especially a relationship, or threat of significant loss

-Loss of interest in hobbies, work, school etc.

- Preparation for death such as unexpectedly making out a will or making funeral arrangement

- Giving away prized possessions

-Attempting suicide before

-Taking unnecessary risks, recklessness or impulsiveness

- Loss of interest in personal appearance

- Increased use of alcohol or drugs

- Expressing a sense of hopelessness

- Facing a situation of humiliation or failure

-A history of violence or hostility

- Being unwilling to “connect” with possible helpers

What to do

Ways people can help someone threatening or possibly considering suicide, according to the agencies, include:

- Learn the warning signs

- Be available and show interest and support

- Ask if the person is thinking about suicide

- Talk openly and freely about suicide

-Be willing to listen, allow expression of feelings and accept those feelings

-Don’t be judgmental or debate whether suicide is right or wrong or if feelings are good or bad

-Don’t dare someone to do it

- Don’t ask “why” because it can encourage defensiveness

-Offer empathy, not sympathy

-Don’t act shocked because it can create distance

- Don’t be sworn to secrecy, seek support instead

-Offer hope that alternatives are available

- Remove the means and get help from people and agencies specializing in suicide prevention
