City of Mattoon plans to close airport fire station

MATTOON — Upcoming changes for the Fire Department include fewer firefighters and closure of one fire station.

And there will be a new fire chief in charge on Oct. 1. That decision became official Wednesday night with a vote by Mattoon City Council members in a special meeting.

The upcoming retirements of fire Chief Mike Chism and Assistant Chief Andy Adair are part of the attrition to reduce the firefighter numbers by six over the next three years — that would bring the total rank and file down from 36 to 30. Adair will be replaced by three shift captains, but one firefighter taking a job in Bloomington will not be replaced, Chism said. Retirements are expected to reduce four positions in a couple of years as well.

The reduction in personnel will also close Mattoon Fire Station 2 at Coles County Memorial Airport in the near future, Chism said. Stations 1 & 3 will remain at Mattoon City Hall and Marshall Avenue and 27th Street, respectively.

“It will close soon, but we will still protect the airport,” Chism said.

The reductions in staff and closure of a fire station will not cut back on the quality of the fire department, Chism said.

“We’ll still protect the city, and remain a highly trained department. That will not change,” Chism said.

Both Chism and Adair expressed confidence in newly appointed fire Chief Tony Nichols, who will be learning from men he has known much of his life. Nichols, 39, is the son of a retired fire captain and has nearly 15 years with MPD. He is also a Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf War, serving on an aircraft carrier.

“Tony is well trained and he knows the operations. He knows the direction this department needs to go, especially toward emergency medical services. He’s one of the guys you always look for at a fire scene,” said Chism, who will retire in October.

“Tony brings with him the respect of his co-workers and his abilities have advanced his career,” said Adair, who will retire in August.

Both Chism and Adair will help with the transition for Nichols and his shift captains, Denny Kingery, Doug Dodson and Mitch Strader, MFD veterans with a total of more than 65 years in the department. The outgoing chief and assistant chief will assist with cross-training in coming weeks.

Nichols said he is encouraged by the team he will be working with.

“With these shift captains you have three reliable guys with plenty of experience. And they all give 110 percent and have the respect of firefighters when they ask them to do something,” Nichols said.

The shift captains will fulfill the duties of the assistant fire chief position, which is being eliminated as part of the cost-cutting strategy of city leaders.

Nichols will be one of the youngest fire chiefs for the city in decades, Chism confirmed. The outgoing chief believes that is an advantage because the future of firefighting and emergency operations call for new technologies and techniques.

“There have been a lot of changes in operations for this department over the last few years. So having a younger outlook can help you see what is needed in the future,” Chism said.

But Adair noted that Nichols will face a big challenge during his tenure as chief.

“He will be doing this with less firefighters around,” he said.

" Wasn't too long ago, a hired hand was envisioning a firehouse in the Coles Centre enterprize zone. Aka agracel convention center scheme, thats only viable if it gets proped up by tax dollars.

The one that got annexed just so the city could use its TIF magic tool, to unclutter the TAX responsibilities of developers for 2 or 3 decades. The one with the proposed initial outlay of reimbursement to cover well past the curb for infrastructure, and various landscaping elements well beyond what migh be considered the boulevard. Then an additional 1% shopping toll, from day one. The field that rose and righter legislated as contributing to flooding all the way to Loxa, which is several miles north east, and defys gravity and logic evidently. This geolgical oddity, probably needs a road side marker commemorating it.

Perhaps they will land a ripleys believe it or not museum, or a fertilizer companies corporate headquarters.

Don't forget the lake paradise ponds sale, began with the noble public service of removing pesky geese, followed soon by draining, then failing to mow any of it, preceding to an end loader yanking playgroud equipment.

One might think, officials from the airport would have been a good thing to touch base with in reporting this news.

Perhaps lincoln fire protection district, may want to shift into the airport firehouse and coverage. City logic however may have life safety issues, suddenly need that building an empty lot.

The biggest loser in the downsizing, besides accident victims seeing a longer response time, will probably be mutual aid participation.

Taxpayers will lose from the sale of surplus equipment and vehicles, followed by the purchase of new stuff, for the new fire house, when the wind shifts yet again. "

Our if they didnt buy a haz mat truck that is fully loaded and no reason to have that high tech of one we prob wouldnt be losing some fire fighters and our taxes prob wouldnt be goine up. "

I'll bet Ervin and Hall are salivating at that prospect. Mike. "

" The big question is, "Why did it take them so long to see the error of their ways?" Placing firemen and equipement five miles out of town was a stupid idea. Leaving it out there for so many years was also stupid. Ervin was fire commissioner for four years and the station was not moved. Hall takes over and two months later they anounce they are closing it. Makes it fairly obvious Ervin only cares about spending money, not saving it.

Will the City be reimbursed by the Airport for the new exhaust removal system that was just installed or did Mattoon waste that money? "

" I wonder how many lives, both civilian and fire dept. personnel will have to be hurt or killed before they see the error in the reduction of staff. Not to mention the slower response times to Interstate accidents, hospital occurrences, and as stated mutual aid. Oh well at least the street dept. still are over staffed to stand around and do nothing. They can continue to send four guys to do a one man job. Never mind those that but their lives on the line. "

" Somebody with money could purchase the firehouse and make it into a FIREHOUSE RESTAURANT.

I've always thought that another restaurant should be located out there, maybe a fast food drive up or something.

If you've ever had a sick or injured family member in the hospital, then you know the last thing you want to do is stay away from them too long. And hospital food can get a bit, shall I say, boring? "

" jrhendren, the saddest part about this whole mess is it should not have happened. Politicians mismanage our tax dollars. They give away money and blame the pension system. They use the fire department pension fund as an excuse but then hand out huge "going away bonuses" that will only cost the pension fund more. In the end Mattoon will have a smaller fire department. It will affect response times, it may affect our insurance rates, and it could cost lives but the politicians will spin it to their benefit. "
