Nine-run third helps MDC past Kansas
By MIKE MONAHAN, Staff Writer mmonahan@jg-tc.com
SULLIVAN -- On a humid Tuesday at Leon Lane Memorial Field in Wyman Park Moultrie-Douglas County American Legion Post 479-429-27’s baseball team broke open a scoreless game with a nine run third inning against Kansas Post 539.MDC led 9-0 after four innings.
MDC went on to post an 11-4 victory.
MDC scored the nine runs on four hits, taking advantage of four errors and five walks.
Recent Sullivan graduate Tyler Frerichs, who is headed to play at Lincoln Land Community College, picked up the win in his first start. Frerichs, who mainly used as a reliever during the high school season, pitched five innings and allowed three hits and three runs, two earned with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Frerichs retired 10 of the first 12 batters he faced allowing only an infield single by Taylor Nead in the seocnd out and walking Cody Meyer in the third.
"I have not pitched for three weeks," said Frerichs, who is to be a shortstop at LLCC. "I felt like I could throw my curve ball anywhere in the count. My fastball is not over powering."
Of course getting a nine run lead didn't hurt Frerchis any.
"This is one of the better hitting teams I have been on," said Frerichs.
The inning began with a walk to Shaheen Shabrou, who just finished his freshman year at Quincy Univeristy. Auste Shelmadine reached on an error as he sacrificed Shabrou to second. Tuscola’s Dillon Hoel, the leadoff batter walked and after Kansas threw Shabrou out at the plate, Paul Hrvol got the first hit of the game for Post 479-429-27 with a single to right on the first pitch. Shelmadine scored on the hit and Hoel scored on an error. Kurtis Kinyoun drew a full-count walk and stole second. With two outs Arcola’s Ed Leal singled to center, scoring a run. He advanced to second on an error as another run scored. Sullivan’s Chris Marrs had a ground rule double as the ball went through the opening in left-center field. Adam Carver reached on an infield single, driving in a run. Another run scored when Shabrou reached on an error and Hrvol drove in the final two runs of the ining with a two-run double to left.
MDC coach Tim Wilson said they had a pitch count on Frerichs who threw 84 pitches. Kinyoun pitched the final two as Post 479-429-27 improved to 7-8.
"He picked us up when we were low on pitching.," said MDC coach Travis Wilson. "Offensively, we were pretty aggressive on the bases and that helped and we got a couple of clutch hits with two outs. It was a good win for us."
Curtis Washburn suffered the loss giving up one run, which was unearned in two plus innings with no hits, three strikeouts and two walks. Post 539 used four different pitchers and allowed five earned runs.
Lando Bass, who is headed to play at Olney Central College, was 3-for-4 with a double to lead the Post 539 offense.
"I pretty much just waited on a fastball and hit it where it was pitched like I have been coached," said Bass.
As for the error filled third inning Bass said to move on, " You have to forget about it. You have to look at what you did wrong and what you did right and carry what you did right on to the next game and hope everything falls right for you the next game."
Hrvol was 2-for-5 for MDC with a double, while Kasaskia bound Adam Carver was 3-for-4 with a run batted in and three stolen bases. Carver scored on part of a double steal in the third as Shabrou took second. In the fourth Carver was in a run down, but made it to third safely.
When a coulple of things go wrong that is when you have to really bear down and stop the bleeding becasue you have to stay out of those 6-7 run innings becasue you have a chance to come back but when you give up nine in an inning that makes it awfully tough," said Kansas coach Al Lord. "I think we came in here still smarting a little bit from Sunday's loss (to Mattoon Post 88) and we have not totally recovered from that. Hopefully we are going to get that changed when we go to Toledo Thursday. I leet the boys know tonight that we need to make some changes in our approach to the game and hopefully we will start seeing some better results."
;Moultrie-Douglas is to play Toledo Post 764 Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
