LETTER: Prayers, as well as eyes, to be on Mattoon

Congratulations, Mattoon.

It was good news to hear that hard work and faith paid off. Even though it is not a done deal, it is more promising than it was.

If FutureGen gets the green light, Mattoon will be spoken by people in the Europe, Chine and across the world.

The FutureGen Alliance would not have gone out of their way to stick with Mattoon if they felt it was not worth defending. They have too much at risk.

Think of the growth to the local economy this will bring. When so many people are out of work, this could not come at a better time. Think of the thousands of jobs this will create, temporary and permanent. The increase of revenue for the city and state.

With more revenue better infrastructure. More businesses will arrive and more employment.

Not only being acclaimed around the world and the boost in jobs and the economy think of the environmental impact it will have on the world.

Millions of tons of carbon gases less to breathe. We need less greenhouse gases. FutureGen will offer that. We need more human jobs and less machines. Machines don’t support families.

Mattoon will go down in the history books. The world’s eyes will be on Mattoon. If the project succeeds others will follow.

Mattoon will be a world leader. You will have the Alliance to thank.

Not only the eyes but the prayers will be with Mattoon.

LEONARD DeROUSSE

Casey

" Mattoon will go down in the history books. The worlds eyes will be on Mattoon.

But then again the reason might be the same as Bhopal, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Lake Nyos. I agree, we should pray. This is no joke. Imagine how much coal will have to be consumed to create a by-product of liquid carbon dioxide at the rate of 1.9 tons per minute. Imagine the slag. This plant is going to be a monster. Pray for the 750 children who will spend several hours a day downwind at the grade school just one and one eighth miles away. Mattoon could become famous. "

There you go again INVICTA, getting Wortman all excited. "

" INVICTA -- THANKS SO MUCH. That cracked me up! I have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard.

Whew. I needed that.

Please post some more paranoia!!! With all the upsetting layoffs in the social service industry, I could use some more humor.

Harry Potter, you need to ratchet your paranoia up some. It's not nearly as amusing as it used to be. "

INVICTA wrote on Jun 24, 2009 2:52 PM:

" Collatine:
Here is some more paranoia for you to laugh at. The new process will add 30 to 60% to the cost producing power over other available sources. The plant will capture only 60 to 90 percent of Co2 so laugh at the 200,000 to 800,000 pounds of Co2 per year that won't be captured.(their figures). Where do you think that will go? Do the math yourself. Just don't laugh too hard. You may need the air if anything goes wrong. "

Hey, I'm doing the best I can, but I have people following me around. "

Harry Potter wrote on Jun 25, 2009 8:04 AM:

" BHOPAL, INDIA
Nearly 20 years after an accident at a Union Carbide chemical plant killed thousands here, there are signs that a second tragedy is in the making. New environmental studies indicate that tons of toxic material dumped at the old plant have now seeped into the groundwater, affecting a new generation of Bhopal citizens.
CS Monitor-

Yeah medic, we remember. Is it any wonder the investors for FutureGen want law suit protection as part of the deal? Is Mattoon is willing to sell its soul and the safety and health of future generations for a lousy 150 jobs? Apparently so.

Wait until those coal trucks start rolling through town. If you think the boiler slag fiasco was a big deal, you aint seen nothin' yet. "

INVICTA wrote on Jun 25, 2009 10:22 AM:

" The math...
FutureGen says 1 to 2.5million tons of Co2 will be injected per year but we will use the 1 million tons per year of Liquid Carbon Dioxide figure projected locally. 1,000,000/365=2,740 tons per day divided by 24=144tons per hour divided by 60= 1.9 tons per minute(3,600lbs). Liquid Co2 wieghs 8.47lbs. per gal. so we have 425.2 gallons of liquid Co2 per minute being injected. So a 60 second accidental spill at the surface would produce 425lbs of liquid Co2. Liquid Co2 as a gas displaces 47 cubic feet of air per gallon at 100% pure Carbon Dioxide gas.(Almost 20,000 cubic feet) Breathing air with 10% Co2 will make you sick. Breathing it at 30% is lethal in a very short time. With a 20mph wind from the North West it takes 3 minutes for the air at the plant to reach the Grade School. I am not saying how dangerous this might be but the question that needs to be asked and answered is this. Since Co2 is about 1.5 times as heavy as air, what would the concentration of C02 be at the grade school at the heighth of the average student's head if an accident should happen? "

" This thick muggy air, would probably have the area experiencing smog, if if that were running now. just like it would memorial day to labor day, most every year.

Funny how the artists vision, leaves a neat looking building behind a pristine pond, but excludes a smoke stack to required specifications, and waste disposal areas. Amazing how there is no coal, conveyance, or storage anywhere in the picture either.

I bet when youngs radiator came to downtown, there were just as many good for the community supporters for it. Too bad they didn't take up a collection to do more than hide that eyesore behind a chain link fence finally.

Hope the city filed the proper building permits, and got a variance to do a fence of that nature, in town. Then again the city has an ordinance, excluding it from being held to the same standards of accountability, its citizens are. "

" I've always had my doubts as to the efficiency and actual job production There might be an uptick when they actually build the thing, then again, it would only be union workers probably, and how many union workers does this area have compared to non? Afterwards, we're looking at what? 150 jobs? That really is a drop in the bucket. And for what?
We put a potentially lethal plant up close to a fairly good sized population center, with plenty of opportunity for Murphy's Law to transpire.
FutureGen seems to me to be a case of "we have to do it!...now!...it's for the good of the community!" -- kinda like the library and the city hall building. Except this one surely pays off certain people pushing for it much better, and the repercussions much more deadly for the average citizens -- who will like as not receive next to nothing out of this, maybe a lucky few will get jobs...for as long as the thing stays (plants get shut down a lot, usually after they've ran out of tax leniency). "

" One FutureGen won't bring much stimulus to the local economy because most of the jobs are going to be high tech employees brought in from outta state. Two, is it worth the carbon coming out of the ground killing half the town if this experiment doesn't work? "
