'Gather at the Gardens' garden walk is Saturday in Mattoon
The First United Methodist Church of Mattoon will host its annual garden walk, “Gather at the Gardens,” from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Four homes plus a cul-de-sac featuring the front yards of six homes are on the walk this year.
Proceeds from the garden walk will benefit UMW missions locally. Master gardeners will be at most of the gardens between 10:30 a.m. and noon to answer gardening questions.
Refreshments including homemade cookies and lemonade will be served at the Dakota Avenue garden, where the Wilhe Pickit Band will provide music.
Participating garden locations are as follows:
n 3208 Western Ave., home of Ed and Shelly Ashby: This location features the look of a southern plantation home. Its garden features a yard with a wide array of color and a variety of flowers, along with some flowering shrubs. It also features a Japanese Koi pond and Japanese plants.
n 3608 Western Ave., home of Michelle Hartbank: This location offers city living with some country flavor. An acre of old pasture has been designed with plants, shrubs and flower beds. Guests can walk through a “white garden” and several garden paths. Hartbank has added mature arborvitaes for a shaded eating area and a brick patio with a chiminea. A old horse stable has been converted into a potting shed.
n 100-113 Ambrose Drive: Guests can enjoy the front yard beauty and gardening talents as they walk the sidewalks of this six-home cul-de-sac in the Lanes Acres South subdivision. Around the sidewalk, guests will see Rex and Chris Roberts’ Victorian home, complete with a black iron fence bordering the front yard. This home is surrounded with an array of flowering beds, giving the home an “English garden” flavor. A mixture of annuals and perennials, as well as flowering shrubs and vines, are displayed. Surrounding the home are beds of hydrangeas, weigela, viburnum and dwarf Japanese maple trees, with many perennial accents as well as conifers. Wisteria vines surround the front porch and trellises of honeysuckle and clematis accent the back yard. A concrete statuary adds a formal touch to this garden.
n 325 Linden Lane, home of Diane Jackson: Past the daylilies visitors will find “Diana’s world of favorite past times,” containing decades of old Japanese maples with newly planted perennials. The back yard features a wide variety of perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubbery.
n 2301 Dakota Avenue: home of Richard and Mary Lou Barber: A rock garden adorned with a fountain, flowers and a large rock dated Oct. 8, 1949, greet visitors to this garden. Taking a walk down the wooden sidewalk, visitors will find a variety of roses, followed by a bridge over another rose garden, with a fountain and statue of the 10 Commandments. The gazebo contains paintings of old barns in the area and the pergola features hanging planters.
