Mattoon schools offer student health to-do list

MATTOON — Even though school just ended, school officials want parents to start planning for the next year.

Several actions are required for kindergarten, second, fifth sixth and ninth grades. These actions will need to be completed before the beginning of the next school year.

Children entering kindergarten must have a physical, DPT number 4 immunization done after age 4, polio immunization done after age 4, MMR number two, Lead screen, Chicken pox immunization, eye and dental examinations.

A second-grader must have a dental examination.

A fifth-grader must have all three Hepatitis B immunizations.

A sixth-grader must have a physical and a dental examination.

A ninth-grader must have a ninth grade physical and may require a tdap immunization

Parents should call their physician, dentist and optometrist for appointments soon. Physicals are required at registration in August.

For questions about the listed requirements, call the school nurse at Riddle School, Jan Stallons at 238-3800; Williams School, Marletta Bolin at 238-2800; Mattoon Middle School, Marletta Bolin at 238-5800; and Mattoon High School, Vicky Wright at 238-7815.

" Funny that Mattoon's population is shrinking, and as a result the student numbers are getting lower by the year. Just a few short years ago the Mattoon schools had one nurse, and now they need three? It's a shame that the one nurse has to walk across the street, why not add a fourth? How about the bus garage, they could probably use a nurse or two, and don't forget the adult ed center, why are they being left out?

With as many administrators as they have, I'm sure the district office could use their own nurse too. How about adding another assistant superintendent, one just to oversee the nurses?

It's good to see the administration is looking out for the local taxpayers money. "
