Central Illinois girl wins Girl Scout Global Citizens essay contest

Springfield — Sarah Yockey, 15, of Shelbyville has won a trip to Europe for her essay about how Girl Scouts are taking action on some of the most compelling issues of our time. Yockey will travel with five other Girl Scouts from around the country on a tour of London, Paris and Switzerland this summer.

Pam Kovacevich, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois CEO, said, “We are very proud of Sarah for expressing how Girl Scouts are addressing the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals. As part of a movement of 10 million girls worldwide, Girl Scouts are stepping up to the most significant agenda of the moment and one that addresses the most pressing concerns of young women.”

Yockey said: “My essay is a reflection on how Girl Scouting has benefited and empowered girls in my community, using examples of that to support my ideas on how the Girl Scouts work with girls like us around the county. One of the things Girl Scouting is doing well in my community is exposing girls to new opportunities, lifestyles, and ways of thinking. I think I have really benefited from that along with all the girls I know. The essay was a great opportunity to express how Girl Scouting is working in my part of the world.”

Girls were asked to choose one of the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals and describe how Girl Scouts are helping to address the goal. This writing contest was separated into two age groups. Twelve of the 12- to 14-year-olds won a four-day all expense paid trip to New York City and six 15- to 17-year-old winners were awarded an 11-day adventure to Paris, London and Switzerland. Nearly 150 girls entered, and the 18 winners are set to travel this summer.

Yockey, the daughter of Jeff and Sandy Yockey of Shelbyville, said: “I am looking forward to meeting the other girls and hearing how Girl Scouting works in their area. I am excited to hear about what they are passionate about and to learn the things they are doing in their communities. I can’t wait to learn how Girl Scouting operates in other countries and meet Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world.”
