Ex-Mattoon administrator takes Jersey County economic post

MATTOON — Alan Gilmore has a new job with the Jersey County Business Association.

The former Mattoon city administrator will start as CEO of the JCBA on July 13, a Jersey County official said Friday. Gilmore officially retired Friday after more than three years as city administrator in Mattoon. He and his wife, Emily, plan on moving to Jersey County in Western Illinois in a matter of months.

“I am anxious to get settled in Jersey County and acquainted with the all the people in the community who have been involved with making Jersey County a center for business and industry,” Gilmore said in a news release Friday issued by the JCBA. “I believe that Jersey County is poised for major economic growth and development in the next few years.”

Much of Gilmore’s work will center on economic development similar to what he did in Mattoon. He worked on several projects in Mattoon, including the redevelopment agreement with owners of the Cross County Mall, the Illinois Central Railroad restoration project and the Coles Centre convention center and hotels project.

He mentioned his intentions to contact U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. John Shimkus to secure road improvement funds for Jersey County. Both lawmakers have been involved in the FutureGen project at Mattoon.

Gilmore is retiring in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund system through his public administrative work in Mattoon, Tuscola, Paris and Flora over the past 22 years. He submitted his retirement papers on Friday at Mattoon City Hall.

It was announced this month that he intended to retire. However, city commissioners had offered a contract extension to June 19 without a full explanation why. Gilmore has declined to comment on the matter as well.

Under his renewal contract, Gilmore could be eligible for up to three months of his annual salary. However, full details of a severance agreement were not available this week from City Hall.

" His "retirement" did not last too long. "Mums" the word. Do we have to file a Freedom of Information Act paper to find city details of his severance, and city arrangements with Mr. Gilmore? "
