ESPNU to televise Panthers

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Eastern Illinois’ football team is to play in an ESPNU televised football game on Nov. 19.

The scheduled game on Nov. 21 against Tennessee State was moved two days earlier to Thursday with a 5:30 p.m. start at O’Brien Stadium to accommodate ESPNU.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for us obviously, to be televised like that,” EIU coach Bob Spoo said. “I certainly didn’t mind (moving to Thursday) because we have a home game the previous week so it worked out well for us. I don’t know if that’s the same for Tennessee State

“I hope the weather is conducive at that point in time. Nevertheless, we all felt good about that opportunity. It was easy to agree on.”

ESPNU was launched on March 4, 2005 and featured almost 500 live events (regular-season and championships) and doubled its distribution in its first year. The first live event ever carried on the network was an Ohio Valley Conference semifinal tournament game between Southeast Missouri State and Eastern Kentucky.

It was announced in May 2009 that ESPN had secured two new distribution agreements for ESPNU with Comcast and DIRECTV, making the network available to more than 46 million college sports fans across the country.

Comcast will launch ESPNU in a majority of its cable systems in time for the start of the college football season on its Digital Classic level of service. ESPNU will widen its distribution to DIRECTV’s CHOICE™ programming package beginning July 1. In addition, Comcast will also make ESPN360.com, ESPN’s broadband network, available to its high-speed Internet customers for no additional charge through Comcast.net, which reaches 17 million unique users per month, also in time for this year’s college football season.
