Honors Program recognizes Lake Land College students



MATTOON — Several Lake Land College Honors Program students were recognized at the annual honors luncheon on April 22.

Shannon Berg, Altamont, received the Freshman Scholastic Achievement Award. She was recognized for earning the highest gradepoint average among her freshman peers in the program, and completing two honors options this academic year.

Among the honors, students graduating from LLC this spring, two completed all the requirements of the honors program. Julie Hoelscher, Effingham, and Mutinta Suuya, Zambia, were acknowledged for their achievements.

Several students received honors scholarships from the Lake Land College Foundation for their participation in honors courses or independent studies. Scholarship recipients were Ann Ignalaga, Bahrain; and Ryan Smoes, Hamilton, Mich. Berg, Hoelscher and Suuya also received scholarships from Lake Land.

In addition, four honors students gave independent study presentations. Berg spoke on a bird watching project completed in her honors zoology course. Hoelscher presented the research she completed on bullying in her honors social psychology course.

Smoes spoke on the research he is conducting on the economic recession in his honors macroeconomics course and Suuya presented her honors independent study project titled “Marketing’s Impact on the HIV/AIDS Global Industry.”

To become part of the honors program, entering freshmen must enroll in a college transfer program at LLC and submit an application package including a completed application form, an official high school transcript, a copy of the applicant’s ACT/SAT record and two letters of recommendation to Maria Boerngen, honors program director.

Applicants must meet at least two of the following eligibility requirements: ACT composite score of 25 or above, high school GPA of 3.5 on a 4-point scale or equivalent or graduation in the top 10 percent of their high school class.

Current LLC students must be enrolled in a college transfer program and submit an application package including a completed application form, an official LLC transcript and one letter of recommendation from an instructor to Boerngen.

To be eligible, applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 in transfer classes after the completion of at least 12 semester hours at LLC.
