Clergy Views: The way to a healthy new you involves spiritual health

I have recently experienced my second sinus infection within the past two months. Some of my triggers are trees, dust, being around smoking and certain flowers.

I try to keep ahead of my problems by taking my medicine, getting allergy shots weekly, using nasal spray and a sinus rinse often. But this is not the image I was hoping for as an adult.

To be healthy, I need to lose some weight and get back on a regular exercise plan. For the most part I eat healthy, but those sweet and salt cravings usually win out.

I look all around and I see the cause of our health problems. We eat fast food, fried food, processed food more often than we should. We rarely walk anywhere and instead we drive everywhere. We eat large portions at restaurants and then sit at the movie theater. We get little sleep, talk on our cell phones, and are glued to our TV or computer.

Oh, how I long for those days of simplicity! I remember taking long walks, seeing neighbors outside sitting in their lawn chairs, kids riding bikes or playing games outside, families sitting down to dinner, playing board games, together. We enjoyed wiffle ball games and playing hotbox.

We were happier people. We ate more homegrown foods and meat that was hunted or caught. We exercised without really calling it exercise, because we were playing and having fun. We were never bored because we were always doing and enjoying.

So what happened? We have made machines to make our lives better when in turn they have changed our lives. What can we do about it?

Put down our technology and spend time with people. Get outside and enjoy the summer! Our relationships, our physical health and our spiritual health are the keys to living longer and healthier lives.

Time goes too fast and people around us are passing us by. Stop! Take time! Relax! Spend time with God and you will notice a difference in your health, attitude and life!

May we never get too busy or too unhealthy that we push God out of our lives!

Have a safe and God-filled summer!
