" So I wonder how many laws will be broken here. Will the authorities stop any drunk drivers, will all the stops allow illegal gambling? All of this to raise money for a dying women wow isn't there better ways to raise funds? Like all the bikers going around in a sober manner asking for donations? Just a thought. Hope you get better Janet. "

" For those of you who don't know Janet, she has organized and raised literally tens of thousands of dollars for Camp New Hope via poker runs for the last 5 or 6 years. She works with the elderly, getting them help when and where they may need it. She is always giving of herself to everyone she meets and is one of the most caring people I've ever met. Even if you can't make it to this event, let's all come together and wish her all the love and support that we, as a community, have been known to show in the past :) Janet's a good example of how to live in the light. Even in these times of darkness she shines! "

" First off, Iraq, let me thank you for your service to our country. I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but not all bikers are drunk driving, law breaking a-holes, just as you might be offended if all veterans were called warmongering murderers. I've participated in numerous poker runs benefitting everything from MDA, Children's Hospitals, Animal Shelters, and yes, even a scholarship in memory of a soldier killed in Iraq. Please don't assume that all people who come out to support others must be non law abiding citizens. I know that some bikers disrespect the law, just like any other sector of the public. Just don't lump us all together. "

And just what, exactly, is a counterfit war veteran? "

" To the Iraq Veteran: okay, here is some info you need to know about bikers and poker runs: The majority of bikers in the U.S. are veterans who have served at least 1 or more wars in the past. The majority of bikers make it alot more possible for someone who has been given a medical diagnosis that the prognis is nil, to pay for food, housing, gas, medical bills, that have bombarded the family as well in a time of need. Veterans are just as more responsible for drinking as any other person who has been in a traumatic situation for months or years. So before you judge us "BIKERS" get your facts straight. We do alot more good than harm! Get out of the 20-30 years ago BIKERSTYLE and live the present! Thank you for serving our country and giving us freedom!!!! But as the saying goes: when we do good, nobody speaks, but when we do bad, everybody speaks!!!! Been to alot and still attending and organizing Poker Runs for the unfortuante!!!! "

madbiker wrote on May 27, 2009 9:56 AM:

" This a poem written by an anonymous biker, but I think it fits the bill:

But, You Didn't See Me

I saw you hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.

But, you didn't see me put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.

But, you didn't see me playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you change your mind about going into the restaurant.

But, you didn't see me attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by.

But, you didn't see me driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you frown at me when I smiled at your children.

But, you didn't see me when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

I saw you stare at my long hair.

But, you didn't see me and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves.

But, you didn't see me and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you look in fright at my tattoos.

But, you didn't see me cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart.

I saw you change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.

But, you didn't see me going home to be with my family.

I saw you complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.

But, you didn't see me when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you yelling at your kids in the car.

But, you didn't see me pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.

But, you didn't see me squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you race down the road in the rain.

But, you didn't see me get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.

But, you didn't see me trying to turn right.

I saw you cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.

But, you didn't see me leave the road.

I saw you waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.

But, you didn't see me. I wasn't there.

I saw you go home to your family.

But, you didn't see me.
Because, I died that day you cut me off.

I was just a biker,.....

A person with friends and a family.

BUT, YOU DIDN'T SEE ME "

Beaches wrote on May 28, 2009 7:23 AM:

" I find many of these comments fascinating. Instead of being glad that people are raising money to help a friend in need, we choose to be critical of the people providing the help? Honestly, get over yourselves. Guess what, there are good bikers and bad bikers, there are good lawyers and bad lawyers - we should be mature enought to understand that everyone is different, and judging them does us no good. Janet - I hope your health improves, I'm sure that knowing you have good friends who love you helps quite a lot. "

madbiker wrote on May 28, 2009 8:22 AM:

" Apparently kamfong watches a few too many movies, Harry. He apparently thinks everyone who rides a bike is a Hell's Angel lol. "

medic57 wrote on May 28, 2009 8:35 AM:

" Never ridden a bike, any bike, have you Kamfong. Rice Burners, as you call them, get forced off the road all the time as do Harleys. "

" When it comes to children, I am fasinated by toddlers and their endless inquisitiveness, my dream job would be to work with them in a day care, what fun that would be. Unfortunately, in this world, being a 52 year old male, just applying for a job like that would be disasterous. People would flog you to death for wanting to do that. But it would be a blast. "

Billie Brant wrote on May 28, 2009 10:39 AM:

" Guess what? We had bikers show up at the benefit we held in October of 2005 for the scholarship at Lake Land established in Toby's name. As far as I know, no "Hell's Angel's" or "outlaw" types showed up! I was grateful for each and everyone of them who came to support us. No fights broke out. No knives were pulled. No drunken brawls happened. Imagine that!

Golly! They even "rubbed elbows" with Dr's, laweyer's and maybe an indian chief. Who knows? We had a diverse group that day including musicians from as far away as Champaign and Oblong and all points north, south east and west. The Charleston VFW club was packed all day long with folks from the community who came to help get the scholarship going and to show respect for a man who contributed much to his country and community.

That's what this poker run for Janet is all about too. She's done much for her community and now she needs help.

Back off on the nasty comments about bikers. Focus on WHY they are participating, "

Billie Brant wrote on May 28, 2009 10:44 AM:

" Hey HP-- I don't know if those rice burners can run circles around Harleys or not. I don't know much about all of that stuff. I do however feel they sure don't have that great "sound" of a Harley. Love it! I especially love to hear them when they're just sitting there idling! Blap, blap, blap! :-) "

Feat wrote on May 28, 2009 10:53 AM:

" I find it hard to believe that anyone can find fault in people trying to help each other.
Those who are involved in this benefit are just trying to "Pay it Forward" to a lady who has helped so many others.
Thank you to all the veterans of all the wars who have protected our freedoms. Without the veterans this benefit or any other public gathering would probably not be possible. "

Feat wrote on May 28, 2009 12:33 PM:

How can fault be found in trying to "Pay it Forward"?
Thanks to all the veterans of all the wars.
Freedom isn't free. "

Ever ridden a Buell? "

Harry Potter wrote on May 28, 2009 3:32 PM:

" Ever ridden a Buell? "

No, but I had a Vincent. They were so fast they were outlawed on the European tracks at one time. Sort of like what happened in NASCAR with the Chrysler Hemi, when Ford and GM couldn't compete with them. Just like with Chrysler, the other motorcycle manufacturers couln't put out anything that would keep up with them.

And for kam, how many people drop their motorcycles from cranes? That must be one of those things you Harley riders do after you get blown away by a "rice burner". I honestly never considered doing that. Let us know when you're going to do that, I would like to see it. lol! "

M wrote on May 28, 2009 7:22 PM:

" Not much can compete with the exhilaration of riding a bike. Harley, Rice-burner,... 50 cc scooter ...kidding...but maybe with a power-band or something. lol
I once saw a rough looking Harley rider with a gigantic American flag on the back and while it made me laugh out loud I was still glad to see the patriotism.
I hope the Poker Run goes well and all stay safe. Janet, I do not know you but I wish you well and thank you for your selfless acts for others' needs. "

madbiker wrote on May 29, 2009 8:26 AM:

" In Kamfong's defense, I have seen a bike dropped from a crane. It's a sort of pr type of thing they do at major bike rallies like Sturgis and Daytona. I've always thought it was a big waste, because I don't think it makes a bit of difference what you ride, if you enjoy it, do it.

Sorry I didn't pick up on the irony, Kamfong, if that's what it was. I suppose I get a little defensive when I feel like my friends and I are being judged. If more people saw the good things that lots of us do, like all the positive things Janet seems to have done in her lifetime, maybe they would see it differently. "
