Ill. farmers have much to celebrate during National Beef Month

May is National Beef Month! So, here is some “food for thought” when you are firing up the grill this summer.

- Beef accounts for 24 percent ($816 million) of the total impact of animal agriculture in Illinois.

-The Illinois livestock industry generated $3.4 billion in total economic activity and 45,509 jobs in 2001.

-In 2008, Illinois farmers produced 1,240,000 head of cattle and calves.

- In 2007, Illinois marketed 787 million pounds of beef. (That’s a lot of hamburgers!)

- 14,766 Illinois farms have beef cattle.

-6,178 are “beef cattle ranching and farming” operations.

- 2,217 are “cattle feedlots.”

- 262 million people will eat beef in their homes in the next two weeks.

- Farming is the primary occupation on only 50 percent of beef cattle ranching and farming operations. Two out of three of these operators report some off-farm work and 50 percent work more than 200 days a year off the farm.

- Illinois Farm Bureau supports beef production through lobbying efforts, local promotions, grassroots policy, and being a lead member in innovative groups, such as Illinois Livestock Development Group.
