PLANO, Texas -- Josh Patrick was still alive in both the singles and doubles consolation rounds heading into the final day at the NJCAA Division I national tennis tournament.
Patrick, playing at No. 2 singles, won both of his singles matches Wednesday and was scheduled to face sixth-seeded Sean O’Grady of Scottsdale, Ariz., in the consolation championship this morning. He and Punsisi Dayaratne were also one win away from making the consolation final in No. 1 doubles. The duo was set to meet Central Alabama’s Edward Baldwin and Matthew Teichmiller today, and a win could pit them against O’Grady and Javier Millan, who were seeded third when they lost in the first round.
The tourney was played Wednesday without rain for the first time all week, and temperatures soared into the 90s.
“Today’s the first we’ve finished before 9 o’clock,” Lake Land coach Dave Johnson said. “We didn’t get started Monday until 2:30 p.m.”
Patrick overcame a tough opponent, Temple’s Fernando Carregal, in an 8-6 tiebreaker in the first set before pulling away 7-6, 6-2 in his consolation semifinal.
Dayartne, Chad Melcher and Chris Devall each won his first-round match before losing, while Devall and Andy Buscher did the same at doubles. Only players who lost in the opening round advanced to the consolation.
At No. 1 singles, Dayaratne was beaten by the No. 2 seed, Rasid Winklaar of Abraham Baldwin, while Patrick lost to the fifth seed at No. 2 singles, Ataide Suca of Barton County, who later bowed out in a straight sets loss to top seed Cledson Carvalho of Laredo, Texas.
With no more than a point and a half available if they win three more matches, the Lakers can finish no higher than 12th overall.
