Sure-headed Dowling picks Millikin for softball

CHARLESTON -- Not having made an error yet this season, first baseman Hannah Dowling was not about to let this college softball chance get past her.

“I’ve wanted to do it pretty much my whole life,” the Charleston senior said. “I love playing softball. My coaches helped and my parents are always there to support me.”

This has landed Dowling the chance to play at Millikin University.

“Hannah is a strong defensive first baseman and solid contact hitter with the ability to drive the ball,” Millikin coach Debbie Kiick. “We are anxious to see what she can do at our level.”

As a high school senior Dowling leads Charleston with a .366 batting average, a .549 slugging percentage and 16 RBIs. She has eight doubles, a triple and a home run.

“She has a .519 on-base percentage because she has a good eye at the plate,” Charleston coach Karen Karch said. “She is really an all-around player on offense and defense both.

“I’m tickled for her that she’s going to get to play after high school. She’s always been an excellent defensive first baseman. Even when she was eighth grade I was amazed at the plays she picked up.

“She hasn’t made an error yet this year. Not only does she not make errors but she saves others.”

Dowling said, “I just try my hardest to scoop anything and save others some errors.”

The senior saw Millikin as her top college preference with plans to major in sports management.

“I went and visited there and talked to the coach about playing,” Dowling said. “They have JV and varsity. She said I would probably be on JV the first year.”
