LETTER: Social Security cut, tax increase to hurt many

VIC. J. STENGER, Arcola

With all due respect, Saturday I received a letter from the Senior Citizens League, Post Office Box 97173, Washington, D.C. Zip Code 20090-7173.

The letter suggests that there is a strong wind blowing in our nation’s Capitol to begin action to downsize the payment of Social Security (for the elderly of our beloved nation).

The main thrust seems to point toward a reduction by $150. The Leadership has openly declared an ambition to reform the Social Security System. The older folks of our nation need every penny they can get! The Senior Citizens League is backed and supported by Senator Durbin, Senator Burris and Congressman Timothy Johnson (our Illinois lawmakers).

It seems obvious that leadership in state government is gearing up for a tax increase. We don’t need it! We cannot afford more taxes and we definitely can’t afford smaller Social Security paychecks. The wiser use of the time of all old people, is to write Sen. Durbin, Sen. Burris and Congressman Johnson (tell them what you think).

" The Goverment always preys upon those who have the least, with no power to revolt.

To ensure plenty for those that have the most. Welcome to the greed of the New America.

Kind of reminds you of 1939 Germany. "

" Another of those silly little conspiracy stories you hear in morning group at the local coffee shop. If you haven't tried it yet take a morning off work, go to a coffee shop gathering place, sit close to a group of us oldies and you just won't believe all of the things they come up with. Where in the world do they find 'em? Beam my up Scotty, the inmates are running the asylum. "

" It would not be the first time the gooberment has looked at cutting SSI and SS disability payments and well as cutting medicare coverage as a way to help the federal budget.

Of course if the idiots in DC hadn't had their hands in the social security cookie jar so much there really would not be much of an issue. "

" Let's hope that if there's truth to this, that the AARP lobby can squash it fast. It doesn't make any sense to give billions to the automakers so they can keep making cars, and then take away money from the very people who might buy them. "

" Most folks receiving S.S., S.S.D. and S.S.I. got a $250 stimulus payment yesterday. 'Reduction' ....? "

" What is that expression..... The government givith and the government taketh away.

I would not be the first time did one thing and turned around and did the exact opposite a year later. "

When you put the two words,

'The' and 'IRS' together, it spells THEIRS? "
