Anna-Kirkpatrick pottery to be on display

CASEY — To help celebrate the Casey Antique Centre’s six-year anniversary, visitors to the Centre in Casey on Saturday and Sunday will be treated to a special exhibit of Anna-Kirkpatrick pottery sponsored by the Anna-Kirkpatrick Pottery Museum, located in Anna. The pottery exhibit will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Anna-Kirkpatrick Pottery was manufactured in Anna during the mid- to late 1800s by the Kirkpatrick brothers, Cornwall and Wallace. The Anna Pottery primarily produced utility items for day to day living including crock churns, jars, jugs, bowls, yard and cemetery urns, drain tiles, etc. Tobacco pipe bowls were made by pottery employees by the millions.

The items that the Anna Pottery are now nationally known for are the items created by the brothers which reflected the society, government and economy of the time. Anna Pottery items are nationally exhibited in important venues including the Smithsonian Institution, New York Historical Society, Rockefeller Folk Art Center and the Illinois State Museum in Springfield.

Unlike writers of the day, instead of communicating their political and social views on paper, the brothers cast their opinions in stone, literally. During the years 1859 to 1896 the Kirkpatrick’s pottery thrived. The Kirkpatrick brothers are best known for the eccentric, bizarre and often humorous novelty wares they made as a sideline to the utilitarian crock pieces.

The Casey Antique Centre is located at 601 N.E. 13th St., Casey. Take exit 129 off Interstate 70; go south 1 mile to U.S. Route 40; go left for half a mile; then left on 13th Street.

Call 932-9229 or e-mail caseyantiques@joink.com with questions.
