'TEA Party' tax protest event planned for Tuesday

CHARLESTON — A rally Tuesday evening at Morton Park is part of a national movement against high taxes, the organizer says.

The event is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and is being called a “TEA Party” for “Taxed Enough Already,” organizer Holly Rennels said. The Charleston resident said she learned of other, similar events taking place elsewhere and wanted to include one locally.

“It’s just a get-together where people of like minds can make a statement,” Rennels said.

The event and others like it are mostly to protest federal spending, including but not limited to recent economic stimulus legislation, Rennels said. She said part of the concern is how government spending will affect future generations.

“It’s essential to protest all this huge legislation, “she said. “It’s a protest of the exorbitant spending.”

The rally will take place in the southeast pavilion at the park and will include speakers and entertainment, Rennels said. She added that state lawmakers from the area have been invited.

The event isn’t associated with any political party or organization, Rennels said. She said she’s a former business owner and thinks that current government spending goes against sound business and economic practices.

“When a business is in trouble is not when you go out and spend more money,” she said. “It’s a very poor business model. It’s nothing anyone would promote in the business world.”

Asked about alternatives, Rennels said she favors a consumption-based tax that would lead to smaller government and the need for fewer taxes overall. If the government is providing stimulus funding it means businesses aren’t learning from their mistakes, she said.

The protest also comes at a time when Illinois is considering tax increases, Rennels said. She said there are about 1,500 “TEA Party” events scheduled across the country.

Rennels said people who attend Tuesday’s event are invited to bring dinner, and tea will be served. She said anyone with questions or wanting more information about the event can contact her by e-mail at hrennels@yahoo.com.

Nearly every local taxing body raised their annual levy max, the state is broke and looking to tax and fee its way out of it, and this group wants to have a local 3hr stand against the stimulus. Did they forget many requests for stimulus money came locally?

I think many of the other tax protests, have been about current tax increases. Kentucky had one where they poured bourbon on the capital steps, to protest the state hitting alcohol and cigarettes hard, to solve its budget issues.

Its not one party specific, but goaled at specificly protesting the stimulus. I think that kind of narrows it down.

A bullhorn and some talking points on the failures of bush administration, and its price for future generations to pay off, might stampeede the elephants from the petting zoo. "

The TEA Party protestors are concerned about tax burdens on future generations. Several years ago, during a Republican dominated DC, economists were predicting 80% - 90% future tax rates for our children and grandchildren. Those dire predictions didn't register though, and DC kept on spending recklessly.

In just the past three months, during a Democratic dominated DC, these future tax rates have been confirmed.

If there is any partisanship here, it's not between the GOP and the DEMS; both sides of the aisle spend recklessly. This clash, this nationwide TEA Party, is between the classes. When we finally hit the point (and we're very close) when there are more recipients than payers in our nation, this country as we know it is doomed.

The other shoe hitting the floor will be the sound of the printing presses as they fire up to cover the debt. The result will be hyper-inflation such as we've never seen. That's what the TEA Party is about. "

The Question wrote on Apr 14, 2009 8:57 PM:

" President Obama has explained clearly why we're in the deregulation-recreated unholy mess we're in. Here's what he said: "This recession is different. This recession was not caused by a normal downturn in the business cycle. It was caused by a perfect storm of irresponsibility and poor decision-making that stretched from Wall Street to Washington to Main Street.
"As has been widely reported, it started in the housing market. During the course of the decade, the formula for buying a house changed: instead of saving their pennies to buy their dream house, many Americans found they could take out loans that by traditional standards their incomes just could not support. Others were tricked into signing these subprime loans by lenders who were trying to make a quick profit. And the reason these loans were so readily available was that Wall Street saw big profits to be made. Investment banks would buy and package together these questionable mortgages into securities, arguing that by pooling the mortgages, the risks had been reduced. And credit agencies that are supposed to help investors determine the soundness of various investments stamped the securities with their safest rating when they should have been labeled 'Buyer Beware.'
"No one really knew what the actual value of these securities were, but since the housing market was booming and prices were rising, banks and investors kept buying and selling them, always passing off the risk to someone else for a greater profit without having to take any of the responsibility. Banks took on more debt than they could handle. The government-chartered companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, whose traditional mandate was to help support traditional mortgages, decided to get in on the action by buying and holding billions of dollars of these securities. AIG, the biggest insurer in the world, decided to make profits by selling billions of dollars of complicated financial instruments that supposedly insured these securities. Everybody was making record profits - except the wealth created was real only on paper. And as the bubble grew, there was almost no accountability or oversight from anyone in Washington.
"Then the housing bubble burst. Home prices fell. People began defaulting on their subprime mortgages. The value of all those loans and securities plummeted. Banks and investors couldn't find anyone to buy them. Greed gave way to fear. Investors pulled their money out of the market. Large financial institutions that didn't have enough money on hand to pay off all their obligations collapsed. Other banks held on tight to the money they did have and simply stopped lending." "

While catching the attention of other Americans talking about taxes and the spending that government is doing (they seem to have been hibernating for the past 8 years not a peep out of them during that time), these groups led by cable news station Fox, are creating or keeping thousands of jobs and companies alive.

Think about it folks. What happens during one of these rallies? Hundreds of people show up. Some are calm, some are angry and some downright ticked off. That kind of rally always requires a police force to work overtime to make sure things stay calm and traffic run smoothly.

They all want to be entertained and have access to food and drink. Most viewers, if not all, will want to carry signs to protest l with. Many will also wear tee shirts or hats with logos on them. Costumes will be on demand. Balloons will be given to the children in the crowds.

Lets see now; thats the extra money for tea companies, restaurants, the clothing industry, the balloon and entertainment industry, police officers, sign makers, costume industry and logo companies. Each of those companies or entities requires employees to make the items, police the area or feed the crowds.

Oh, and dont forget the electric and phone companies along with electricians and technical staff will be put on alert to keep all the lights, phones and microphones in working order at the rallies.

There are no roads; you just drive across the desert wherever you like -- try to avoid the really big rocks and the really deep sand.
There's no water so you don't have to pay water/sewer taxes.
You won't have to pay for the indigent, for they wouldn't live there, and the old folks are no burden for when they get too old to outrun the rattlesnakes, that problem is solved.

Actually my spouse and I both contacted our HR departments and asked them to withhold an extra $15 from each paycheck as soon as this so-called tax cut came down. Why? As I suggested to you, read the fine print from my HR department:
"However, there may be situations where individuals will be under withheld if no action is taken:

*If an individual works for more than one employer the new tax tables will provide the reduced withholding for both employers. This would
reduce the withholding by more than what an individual would be entitled to.

*Married couples with both spouses working and claiming married on the Form W-4 will also see the reduction in withholding for both spouses. This would reduce the withholding by more than what the married couple would be entitled to.

*Individuals claimed as a dependent on another individual's tax return are not eligible for the reduced withholding. The reduction is
automatic and could result in under-withholding for the year.

*Nonresident aliens are not entitled to the reduced withholding.
The calculations are adjusted so that the reductions not applied to most nonresident alien withholding. However, the calculation adjustment
does not apply to students and business apprentices from India.
Individuals in this category may be under-withheld in their taxes for the year.

In the situations described above, if you want to make sure the appropriate withholding is applied, you need to file a new Form W-4. You may claim fewer withholding allowances on line 5 or request additional amounts to be withheld on line 6.

Now I would suggest this is going to affect a lot of people who will, SURPRISE!, find themselves owing money on their taxes next year.

Meanwhile, Connie, you just continue to ignore what Obama is doing to future generations with the spending he has and will be putting into place and just go right on blaming George Bush for everything if that is what helps you sleep at night. "

" Sit in on a corporate board room struggling to come to grips with the new economic climate Obama has created. Do we expand? Create more jobs? Launch a new product line? Step up our marketing efforts? Ratchet up production?

But, wait a minute. The bigger our company gets, the closer we come to being "too big to fail," a "systemic risk." The nearer we are to intrusive government oversight, limits on executive pay, and regulators breathing down our necks. We better watch out. We may even get taken over. Stay small. Forget the new jobs.

An investor ponders where to put his 401 (k) retirement money. Should he invest in robust, growing companies? Firms with a bright future? But, be careful, they could get so big that they get taken over by the government and you lose your entire investment. Don't invest in firms that will fail, but stay away from those that will succeed too.

Meanwhile, at the kitchen table, a middle class family discusses their career moves. Should she go back to school to pursue a better job at higher pay? Should he put in overtime? Move up in the company?

Hey wait a minute. Our combined income is just under $200,000 a year. If we go any higher, our tax bracket goes up, we start having Social Security withheld on our new income, we lose our current deductions for our mortgage, and state and local taxes, and charitable donations.

Forget the promotion. Forget the new job.

Downtown, investors in a hedge fund are meeting to consider participating in the bank bailout scheme by buying toxic assets from failing institutions. We could make a killing. The investments could pan out big time. It's a risk, but the reward could be great.

But hold on a second. If we make tens of millions, hundreds of millions, while taxpayers have to pay for failed banks, won't we get hit with a 90 percent tax? Won't we get to see our pictures on the front page with the president shaking an angry finger in our faces? Yes, now he wants us to invest, to help him rescue the banks, but once we do, won't he be on our case like he was on AIG's?

The Japanese have a saying that, thankfully, has no English equivalent: The highest nail gets hammered down first. Obama's perverse view of fairness threatens to create reverse incentives, militating against growth, jobs, expansion, and upward mobility.

For decades, astute observers of national welfare policy warned of the perversity of the incentives which kept the poor on welfare and discouraged them from taking jobs. Employment meant that their slightly higher income would be more than offset by the loss of other benefits like food stamps, day care, rent supplements, and Medicaid. Work didn't pay.

Now Obama is applying the same crazy policies to the upper end of the economic spectrum.

Upward mobility is alive and well in the United States, at least until Obama took over. A study conducted in the late 1990s examined the economic fate of those consigned to the bottom 20% of incomes in 1980. The analysis concluded that more than four out of five had left the bottom quintile and one in five was now in the top 20%! It is true that the top quintile is getting richer while the bottom is getting poorer, but the bottom is not the same people. There is, fortunately, a constant churning at the bottom as new immigrants move in and those who used to be on the bottom begin their long, thrilling, upward climb to the American dream.

But Obama does not believe in individual upward mobility. He would penalize it, tax it, regulate it, inveigh against it, and disincentivize it. We will be like salmon swimming upstream to mate. We will overcome the currents, the waterfall, the rocks, the predators and will grapple our way up the stream. Then, at the top of the waterfall, will stand Obama the Bear, waiting to scoop us up and have us for dinner. The taxman cometh.

77 Days In Office - The Right Wing Claim Obama Most Damaging President

I found an op-ed at MichNews.com that was just over the top. Lynn Stuter, a guest contributor, it putting all the blame for everything on President Obama. To hear her tell it, he is going to be our ruination. Ms. Stuter just goes straight for the jugular in her opening statement about President Obama.

The United States of America lays in shambles. In 77 days since usurping the Oval Office, the Also Known As (AKA) Obama Administration has done more damage to this nation than any president before him.

First off, the definition of usurping is, to seize and hold (a position, office, power, etc.) by force or without legal right. If there was some kind of brilliantly executed coup, we would have heard about it. However, I distinctly remember on November 4th, Obama won, fair and square, the election for President of the United States. I dont know where Lynn was, but she missed the party of the decade. She further states that:

In that short time-frame, AKA

has signed into law legislation that will, in one year, put this nation $1.8 trillion further into the hole, bearing in mind that the total deficit spending of the Bush Administration, in eight years, was $400 billion!

Where to begin, Ill start with Bill Clinton, who enacted a bill to cut the deficit. That bill contributed to dramatic decline of the budget deficit in the years following its enactmentin 1998, for the first time since 1969, the nation achieved a budget surplus.

The economy continued to grow, and in February 2000 it broke the record for the longest uninterrupted economic expansion in U.S. historylasting ten years. In the year 2000, the nation was on track to be debt free for the first time since 1835. The surplus in fiscal year 2000 was $237 billionthe third consecutive surplus and the largest surplus ever.

George Bush was left with a deficit cutting plan that was working, instead he decided in 2001, to give a $1.35 trillion tax cut programone of the largest tax cuts in U.S. history. Oh No, he wasnt going to use it to pay down the deficit, instead Bush had a town hall meeting where he announced, the surplus is not the governments money. The surplus is the peoples money. This was a mistake that cost this country dearly. "

He hammered the falsification of financial records to benefit executives, including Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson, both of whom have worked as advisers to Barack Obama. In his speech he stated, "If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole."

Now you are saying that, entirely because of the "Republican caused recession", The President and congress are FORCED to rush through trillion dollar pork-bloated spending bills and massive social programs to fix the economy. No one is stupid enough to buy that excuse. "
