Charleston tennis rolls; softball team loses 1-0

CHARLESTON -- After toppling Olney, Charleston’s boys’ tennis team dropped just one set in nine matches Wednesday to another Apollo Conference foe, rolling past Mount Zion 9-0.

Quintin Davis and Alex Shick played together for the first time this year at No. 2 doubles and senior Kevin Looby won his first varsity match at No. 5 singles before teaming with Marcus Galloway for another at No. 3 doubles.

“Last year it was close,” coach Ryan Shick said. “And against Olney we lost last year. Our goal was to be that much better each match and so far we have been.”

Top singles player Andy Bays had paired with Davis before at No. 2 doubles, but Shick rejoined his former conference and sectional partner for a 6-4, 6-4 win over Banberger and Nate Johnston.

Looby had to challenge his way from the No. 11 spot to the sixth on the team and made the most of it, dominating Alan Hogan 6-1, 6-1.

“I was really pleased with the way he played,” Shick said.

Now 2-0, the Trojans travel to Shelbyville today.
