Nommensen receives Hitter of Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- Add a national player of the week honor for star Brett Nommensen of Eastern Illinois’ baseball team that is ranked 27th in the nation.

The senior center fielder has been named the Pro-Line Athletic National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Nommensen was also named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season Monday. As the national leader in on-base and slugging percentages this week, Nommensen has led the Panthers to an 11-game winning and a national ranking in the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll.

Nommensen hit .769 (10-of-13) with seven runs scored, two doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs in the four EIU wins last week. He reached base safely in 14 of his 17 plate appearances, including in each of his first 13 trips to the plate. Nommensen homered twice in a 12-8 road win over Saint Louis, including leading off the game with a home run for the fourth time this season. He hit a two-run home run in game one against Murray State and knocked in the first run in the second game of that doubleheader, a 2-1 EIU victory.

Nommensen and classmate Jordan Kreke have teamed up to win the last four OVC Player of the Week awards, marking the first time in program history that one team has had a position player honored in four consecutive weeks.

Michigan State’s Nolan Moody, who no-hit Northwestern Saturday in the first game at the new McLane Baseball Stadium in East Lansing, was named the National Pitcher of the Week. Nommensen joins Murray State’s Daniel Hill as OVC players recognized by the NCBWA this season.
