Sweep moves Charleston baseball to 4-0 in conference

ROBINSON -- Charleston is 4-0 in Apollo Conference baseball thanks mainly to pitching and defense.

Joey Miller and Cam Phipps were the latest winners with Brad Wheeler and Joe Fricke providing relief in Tuesday’s 5-1, 11-1 doubleheader sweep at Robinson.

“This makes four straight conference games where we have had dominant pitching,” Trojans coach Derrick Landrus said. “Cam came out and gave up one hit. You can’t ask for more than that. Joey had a rough first couple of first innings and ran his pitch count up but then he threw well. Brad and Joe came in and did well.

“Defensively, you couldn’t ask for much more. Things are going well. When they don’t go well we’ll see what we’re made of. They won’t always go this well. It’s been pitching and defense so far. We’ve manufactured runs when we need to and then got our bats going a little bit in the second game. We’re playing well.”

Derek Hennig particularly had the hot bat going 5-for-5 including a double, scoring three runs and driving in one in the second game.

Wheeler homered while going 2-for-4 in the first game in addition to pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Charleston, 6-1 overall, has a 4:30 p.m. non-conference home game scheduled for today against Marshall at Baker Field.

The freshman-sophomore Trojans, whose doubleheader on Tuesday was postponed, have added to their schedule a 4:30 p.m. game today against Urbana at the Charleston High School field.

Tuesday’s losses dropped Robinson to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Apollo.
