LETTER: People shouldn't be offended by Limbaugh

MICHAEL ZUBER, Charleston

I felt compelled to respond to Mary O’Neill’s letter. Mary and anyone else who watches or listens to Rush Limbaugh should try to not be offended by the things that he says. I find his rants quite humorous and when he says something ignorant or obviously offensive (you can tell because his mouth is moving) I simply remind myself that it is most probably the oxycontin or some other drug talking.

MICHAEL ZUBER

And speaking of blathering, it looks like the emotionally unstable Glen Beck is about to take over Billo the clown's spot as the top cable news comedian. Since Beck moved over to Fox and they allowed him to say and do what ever he wants, the Fox zealots are eating him up and old Billo appears to be about to lose his coveted top spot. The best part is how Beck bumped Hannity down to third place within a matter of weeks, even dumping the liberal from Hannity's show didn't seem to help him. Ya gotta love it. "

Not to defend anyone who doesn't pay their taxes, but I suspect there is probably a big difference is someone who had multiple income sources and hires tax accountants and other experts to figure their taxes than some one who probably only had a couple of W-2's and some unemployment stubs to work with, JW. I would think the chance of error would be greater for the former, don't you think?

I also think that if the Swiss banks ever cooperated with our goverment, we would find all sort of tax dodging going on, and some of those would no doubt be some of the critics who were so loud over some of the Obama's nominations. "

" (CBS)Over the past few weeks, the White House has been casting right-wing talk show host Rush Limbaugh as the head of the Republican Party, and based on a new CBS News poll, it appears they may be onto something: According to the poll, Limbaughs favorable rating stands at just 19 percent, a full 43 points lower than President Obamas.

Limbaughs unfavorable rating, meanwhile, stands at 40 percent, while 41 percent say they dont know or dont have an opinion. Not surprisingly, the conservative commentator, who has said he hopes that the presidents economic policies fail, is far more popular with Republicans 47 percent view him favorably than with Democrats, just seven percent of whom view him favorably.

The poll also found that Republicans are relatively pessimistic about the future of their party. Just 40 percent believe the party is going in the right direction, while nearly as many 36 percent say it is going in the wrong direction. Among all Americans, just 27 percent say the party is going in the right direction and 48 percent say it is going in the wrong direction.

In March 1994 right before the Republican takeover of Congress views were quite different. A Gallup/CNN/USA Today taken at the time found that 58 percent believed the Republican leadership was taking the party in the right direction while just 24 percent thought it was headed in the wrong direction.

--------------

Limbaugh may not be an elected official of the government, but his party seems to have chosen him to speak for them. But have they really? Perhaps he just speaks for the minority of extremists within that party. But so far anyone else who has objected to him has backed down, and that includes the chairman of the RNC.

Limbaugh has has no effect on any elections, despite his claim of being responsible for the Republicans getting the House back in '94.

If the Republicans have any hope of returning to power, sticking with the ideology of the Rush Limbaugh's of their party seems to be wrongheaded, and will no doubt escalate their demise from power.

Limbaugh is a dinosaur who survives by appealing to the hate and anger in so many folks, particularly bitter old white men, who seem to feel they and their ideas are irrelevant in todays world, such as the ones who post on here and rant and rail about our current president. "

I just have never been able to understand how anyone, from either the left or the right, could form a good opinion without looking at all points of view. Some folks on this site, like Tommy A openly boast about only watching Fox news, and I suspect he's not the only one. That's one of the reasons I like to watch Fox, I want to know what the radical right is thinking.

Does an intelligent person make a major decision without looking at all of his options?

And keep in mind, I believe it was eddie who was saying that Billo the Clown is not a conservative just the other day. That in itself should tell us something about his understanding of the issues. lol! "

You've been "stalking" ME junior.

You started chasing me around this site early last month challenging me to provide personal information about myself (I even cited the thread where you started this) while at the same time YOU have been more than willing to sharing some rather intimate details about your own private life.

Actually you shared more than I ever cared to read.

I don't understand the perennial "Fox News is a wing of the Republican Party" slant on these pages. It's far more balanced than CNN... Are you sure they defended the bonuses or pointed out the bigger blunder, in the fact that the government knew about the bonuses and then lied about it to the American people or that the congress gave out billions with no strings attached?

I don't really care about the bonuses. It is only a small percentage of this whole bailout mania. First off, I don't know who is getting them and what they are for. I have heard that they are not performance bonuses, so maybe they are deserved like a salary. The autoworkers had a hand in GM's troubles. Maybe we should tax 90% of their pay too. Where does it stop? While we are at it, let's take 90% of everyone's pay who voted for this bailout mess. They are just as responsible. If the President and congress are so upset at AIG, why don't they all give back AIG's contributions to their campaigns as well?

I am sure if one looked at all of the other bailout money (assuming anyone could find it all) many other companies are giving bonuses too (Freddie and Fannie) and also investing the money overseas (GM). Where is the outrage about that? No, this is just another example of this administration trying to focus everyone's ire on some anonymous "conservative rich white guys", and therefore keeping the focus off of their own incompetance. This is setting a dangerous precedence. If they want to make that issue a condition of the bailout and the company agrees to it, fine. " The Question - you can always cite weird examples to illustrate your argument that Fox News is a wing of the Republican Party, but the operative word you used is "pundits." Yes, Fox News has conservative or libertarian pundits, because those programs sell. Fox's regular news, though, is the most balanced, according to independent research. For instance, news stories on Obama will be about half positive and half negative. Full disclaimer: I don't watch either, but saw CNN on at Subway the other day, and was struck about how anti-Obama CNN's investigative reporters were. Guess they're trying to move up the ratings.

Ed Miller - I agree regarding the bonuses, ...think of it this way: you're one of a hundred executives in charge of a department, and you've been charged with making the company $50 million. If you do so, you're awarded a good bonus. If 40 of the 100 departments MAKE money, then those 40 executives get bonuses, EVEN IF the 60 other executives LOST money. If this is how the bonuses were awarded (in principle), then I'm in favor of them. I think it's a little over the top (I mean, seriously, a MILLION dollars each??), but in principle, I can understand.

If however, the 60 executives who lost money were awarded bonuses, then there is a serious problem.

However, Congress wrote into the law the bonuses should be paid... so they are akin to the Inspector in Casablanca... "I'm SHOCKED, SHOCKED that there is gambling here!" "Here's your winnings, sir," "Oh thank you."

" Yes, Collatine, I agree it's "weird" for an employee of a supposed "news channel" -- the rotten right-wing crone Liz Trotta -- to endorse the assassination of a presidential candidate on the air and laugh about it. But that's what happened.
Such hideous fascist propaganda is TYPICAL for Fox News. Here are the 14 common characteristics of fascist states:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. (Flags image fly with vomit-inducing dizziness on Fox News).
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. (Fox News has consistently defended the Bush-Cheney use of torture).
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - The people of a fascist nation are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities, liberals, communists, socialists, terrorists, etc. (Missing white women and black, Hispanic and Muslim villains are a Fox News staple).
4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. (Fox News worships of the military-industrial complex daily).
5. Rampant Sexism - The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution. (What news channel interviews Hooters girls about economics?)
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media pundits and executives. Censorship, especially in wartime, is very common. (Fox News repeated Bush-GOP talking points verbatim and ad nauseum).
7. Obsession with National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses. (Fear is Fox News' most important product).
8. Religion and Government are intertwined - Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. (Fox News is the very soul of vulgar piety).
9. Corporate Power is protected Members of the industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. (Obvious).
10. Labor Power is suppressed - Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. (Obvious).
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. (Fox News targets one professor or entertainer after another for destruction, and constantly attacks the idea of intellectual independence in Hollywood or the university.)
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations (The flip side of Fox News fear-mongering).
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. (Fox News was strangely unconcerned about Enron, the $12 billion in cash that went missing among Bush's cronies in Iraq, etc. etc. etc.)
14. Fraudulent Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. (Remember that Fox News called Florida for Bush, deliberately and wrongly creating the impression he had won. Fox News' election night newsroom was run by Bush's cousin See Characteristic 13). "

" Fox News has repeatedly suggested the idea of armed rebellion against the U.S. government.
On Feb. 20 the one-month anniversary of Obamas inauguration Glenn Beck hosted a special program called War Room that war-gamed various scenarios including the overthrow of an oppressive U.S. government when "bubba" militias rise up and gain the support of the American military.
The segment featured former CIA officer Michael Scheuer, retired U.S. Army Sgt. Major Tim Strong, and Gerald Celente, a prognosticator who began pitching the idea of an armed rebellion on Fox News shortly after Obamas election last November.
"This is going to be violent," said Celente, founder of Trends Research Institute. "People cant afford it [taxes] anymore. The cities are going to look like Dodge City. Theyre going to be uncontrollable. Youre going to have gangs in control. Motorcycle marauders. Youre not going to have enough police or federales just like Mexico to control the situation."
Beck envisioned the uprising theoretically set in 2014 starting "because people have been so disenfranchised" leading to a "bubba effect" touched off by federal agents from the ATF or FBI arresting some rancher in Texas or Arizona who has taken the law into his own hands in defending his property. Not in the physical sense. When people say the government is too big, they are saying that government spending is too large a portion of our whole GDP. The feds cannot spend money without first taking that money from us. That reduces the amount of money to stimulate the economy. In addition, the resultant high taxes discourage productivity, particularly in the current system, which imposes high tax rates on your salary, savings, investments, and other forms of productive behavior. The government cannot spend your money as efficiently as you can. Look at how they have rebuilt after Katrina. As bad as it sounds, those AIG suits would have probably helped the economy more if they would have just kept their bonuses. "

Wow! Talk about distraction. Just investigating Bush and Cheney will do. But I do understand your not wanting your political idols investigated, especially the war monger/profiteer Cheney.

Judging from your comments on prior wars, I take it you're an historian as well as an economist.

Or are you just shooting for the hip as usual?

You seem to have all the answers, perhaps you're needed in Washington. lol! "

Ed, Ed you're not drinking your Republican Kool-Aid!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't you remember Dick Cheney's pronouncement that "Reagan proved that deficits don't matter". "

You want to whine about some no-bid contracts, fine. Whoopee! I'll bet in previous wars before 24/7 cable news and DOD-ran war correspondence, there was probably ten times the graft of the current wars. But that's irrelevant. You bring up issues like this because you can't discuss the 800 pound gorilla of debt in the room

...the entire Bush administration needs investigated on many levels, I don't think Obama wants to make us look negative though, I'm kind of sick of him trying to please everyone now, he did that before but he still stuck to his guns or w/e, now he is hopping around all over the place, still think he was better choice than McCain "
