LETTER: Republicans had chance to accept compromises

CONNIE MANES, Mattoon

Those that voted no on the Recovery and Reinvestment Bill sure are jumping to get their share of the dough. Those same Republicans that called this bill a mugging, it stinks and America’s worst days — are now making plans on how to spend it.

To Tim Johnson (R) who voted no for the bill, you said, “You don’t buy a whole cow to get the T-bone steak,” congressman, yes you do; unless of course, you compromise with the seller of the cow. Both parties could have gotten a piece of the cow if Republicans had been willing to compromise. Instead you acted as though you had won control last November.

I’m betting we’ll be reading soon how you fought for a part of the bill because it worked.

Four Republican state governors supported it out loud, a few have admitted they would have voted no but that they need the money so they’ll be glad to take it. According to the Republicans that voted for it in the Senate, other GOP members wanted to but couldn’t cross that picket line made by the GOP leadership. Hypocrites!

The Journal Gazette announced recently that Lake Land College had several projects available that they hope they could get funds for from the stimulus package. They claim over 200 jobs could be created. The paper also listed recently that IDOT wanted people to check out their website that listed road projects. They want our opinion.

This means jobs, folks, and it means that finally some of our badly needed infrastructure is going to be repaired. Instead of spending billions on infrastructure in other nations like Iraq and Afghanistan, we’re spending the money right here in America.

If the GOP truly felt this package was a mugging or America’s worst days — they would send the money back, be true conservatives you might say; but they won’t and we all know it. They, like others, want to get re-elected.

This response by the GOP (voting no, then asking for a share) is like a person watching a bank robber run out of the bank with his stolen money and then walking up to the robber’s getaway car and asking for a share of the stolen loot (just don’t tell anybody I asked for it).

If the stimulus helps the economy, give Democrats the credit – Republicans refused to accept any compromises that were given them.

Oh, and like our congress people, you have probably not had time to read the bill so you can't explain how some of the provisions are going to stimulate the economy. You know, the pork.

That all said, I had intended to get on here to ask, in what is probably a futile attempt, a serious question. I would like for someone seriously to explain to me how spending 800 bilion here, 400 billion there and oh, over 600 billion in the future for health care is helping the economy. AS our president keeps reminding us he has inherited a huge deficit which is going to be made even bigger with all this spending. I would just like to hear how this is going to work. I'll try to sort through all the drek of how I'm too stupid to understand so you're not going to bother to the Bush rants about how it's all his fault to the Sarah Palin 'jokes' and see if someone can really explain this. Humanevents (Feb 11 2009) Republicans have caught the Democrats in a midnight "stimulus" power play that seeks to cut Republican conferees out of the House-Senate negotiations to resolve a final version of the Obama "stimulus" package. Staff members from the offices of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) met last night to put together the "stimulus" conference report.

The deal was Snowe's and Collins's, according to a Senate source. Sen. Specter, who had been in Harry Reid's office for an earlier meeting on the compromise, left at about 7 p.m. At 8:45 p.m., there was another meeting at which Sens. Snowe and Collins were the only Republicans present. They made the deal, and Specter signed on to it later. He had given an indication of the deal earlier that evening in an MSNBC interview.

No House Republicans were at either meeting. "

WASHINGTON (Feb 5 2009) The Senate has killed an alternative economic stimulus plan by Sen. John McCain that would have cut income and payroll taxes but spent far less than President Obama's plan.

McCain's plan would have cut the bottom two income tax brackets and lowered corporate income taxes. It also would have extended unemployment benefits and provide money to repair and replace military equipment worn out in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As far as IDOT goes, did you even happen to read that webpage?? 75% of the work is NORTH of Champaign. Also, what jobs are you talking about, Government jobs? Thats one of the reasons were in this mess, to many Government workers doing nothing sucking out of our wallets.
Did you know that in order for Illinois to get any of that stimulus money for their highways that IDOT will have to hire 50 or more people at a tune of 1.5 Million per year. One would think that we only need 2 or 3 people (IDOT Staff) standing around watching people work, not 5 or 6.
The only people that this stimulus will help is the UAW and other over priced union workers, financial institutions and of course all our Government Employees (Federal, State & Local) and Nancy's mice in California that got $30 million dollars. "

" THE 'STIMULUS' RUSE: DEMOCRAT REWARDS

pittsburghlive.com (Feb 1 2009)

There) are indications that Democrats are using the measure to bolster some of the very people who helped create the crisis and common lawbreakers.

-One provision would open the door to illegal aliens being given tax credits -- $500 per individual or $1,000 per couple. Even though "nonresident aliens" aren't said to be eligible, there's a loophole. Those who don't have Social Security numbers can use an alternative number.

-Then there's ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. Already funded with millions of dollars in taxpayer money -- and responsible for bullying the financial sector to give people mortgages who couldn't afford them -- ACORN could receive up to $5 billion more in public money. And the rules regarding the use of this money are even less rigorous than those received in past extortions.

This isn't a stimulus bill; this is a bill designed to reward illegality and thuggery, which just happens to be a very large part of the Democratic Party's base.

We at Military Families United are disappointed with this decision because we feel that the families of the fallen heroes were not consulted prior to announcing this unnecessary change in policy. Despite Sec. " Here are some more 'compromises' the Obama administration wants us to accept since the president is a supporter of ACORN. Partial excerpt from Michelle Malkin's column:

But a closer look at ACORN's sob stories shows that the prototypical foreclosure "victims" don't deserve an ounce of sympathy -- or a cent of our money.

Earlier this week, ACORN activists broke into a foreclosed home in Baltimore. With a mob cheering and camera crew taping, Baltimore ACORN leader Louis Beverly busted a padlock and jimmied the door open at 315 South Ellwood Ave. The home once belonged to restaurant worker Donna Hanks, who assailed her evil bank for raising her mortgage by $300 and leaving her on the street. "This is our house now," Beverly declared with Hanks by his side at the break-in.

What ACORN didn't tell you: Hanks' house was sold in June 2008 for $192,000. She bought the two-story home in the summer of 2001 for $87,000. At some point during the next five years, she refinanced the original home loan for $270,000. Where did all that money go? (Hint: Think house-sized ATM.)

The property initially went into foreclosure proceedings in the spring of 2006. Hanks soon filed for bankruptcy and agreed to a Chapter 13 plan to pay back her bank and other creditors. In September 2006, the bankruptcy court ordered Hanks' employer to deduct $340/month from her salary to pay down the debt. Hanks did not comply with the legally binding plan. In December 2007, the loan servicer issued a notice of default on nearly $7,000 past due.

While she was reneging on her mortgage IOUs, she somehow managed to collect rent on her basement (for which she was taken to court) and rack up a criminal record on charges of theft and second-degree assault. The house was sold seven months ago after two years of court-negotiated attempts to allow Hanks to dig herself out of her debt hole.

Beverly, who claims to be a foreclosure victim himself, was charged with burglary for the break-in and released. He is literally a housing thug -- having been separately charged with second-degree assault and property destruction earlier this year; battery, assault, handgun possession and possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure in 1992; and slapped with a peace order issued against him in 2006."

And these are the people that Obama has praised. "

They rail on the CEO's of businesses about private jets, yet they travel the world on government jets as if they own the place. Even at Connie's blessed EIU, the average CEO could probably find plenty of waste that could be eliminated without harming the instructional content.

As far as the economy goes, this is the United States, the government could have stayed out of it and we would have recovered just fine. "

The bottom line is this, gringa:

This incessant name-game-blame is way beyond old at this point. But Harry makes sure that it is brought up in just about every thread around here.

His motive is quite clear. Anyone can see that, Harry's had a difficult time winning any debates around here lately, so he uses the excuse that I (and a host of other bloggers) are playing the very name-game that he's hiding behind, in an attempt to re-direct the conversation away from any real debate.

This afternoon, Fox News host Shepard Smith briefly veered off the Fox reservation and expressed outrage that al-Marri has been imprisoned for five years without any charges being filed against him:

SMITH: He has been held in a military prison for more than five years not Chris Wallace this next person. And he wasnt ever charged. Think about that. I mean just think about it fundamentally. You are held for five years in prison, and youre never charged! Oh well it was an al-Qaeda suspect, suspected al-Qaeda operative. Who cares who it is?! You dont get to this is America; you do not get to hold people for five years without actually, you do. But hes getting its day in court now.

Indeed, bringing charges against al-Marri in a civilian court represents an abrupt change in policy from the Bush administration which had argued that he could be held indefinitely without being charged. OBAMA ADMINISTRATION MAINTAINS BUSH POSITION ON 'EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION'

ABCNEWS (Feb 9 2009) The Obama Administration today announced that it would keep the same position as the Bush Administration in the lawsuit Mohamed et al v Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc.

The case involves five men who claim to have been victims of extraordinary rendition -- including current Guantanamo detainee Binyam Mohamed, another plaintiff in jail in Egypt, one in jail in Morocco, and two now free....

Obama Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller said of the case, "It is the policy of this administration to invoke the state secrets privilege only when necessary and in the most appropriate cases, consistent with the United States Supreme Court's decision in Reynolds that the privilege not 'be lightly invoked.'"

The ACLU says the Obama administration reneged on civil liberties, offers "more of the same."

Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU said of the decision: "Eric Holders Justice Department stood up in court today and said that it would continue the Bush policy of invoking state secrets to hide the reprehensible history of torture, rendition and the most grievous human rights violations committed by the American government. This is not change. This is definitely more of the same. Candidate Obama ran on a platform that would reform the abuse of state secrets, but President Obama's Justice Department has disappointingly reneged on that important civil liberties issue. If this is a harbinger of things to come, it will be a long and arduous road to give us back an America we can be proud of again."

ST. LOUIS Critics of President Barack Obama's stimulus plan gathered beneath the Arch Friday to cheer speeches over a bullhorn and toss tea into the Mississippi River.

A few conservative activists organized and promoted the rally, with help from talk-radio hosts. Pleased with the turnout in 35-degree bluster, leaders said they had stolen a page from liberal tradition by taking to the streets with homemade signs.

"If I had known this many people would show up, I'd have charged admission," said Bill Hennessy of Ballwin, the lead organizer. "We'll do this every chance we get until Congress repeals the pork or we retire them from public life."

Hennessy estimated that more than 1,000 people showed up. There was no official count, but the crowd spilled across roughly one-fourth of the grand staircase from the Arch to Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard. Former state Sen. John Loudon, R-Chesterfield, said, "We conservatives are usually pretty pathetic at making crowds. But this one's good."

Chicago's lakefront is the site of fireworks extravaganzas, sailing regattas and air and water shows. But come summer, if Rick Santelli has his way, it may host a political protest"a Chicago Tea Party," with angry Americans gathered on Lake Michigan, "dumping in some derivative securities."

Santelli, a CNBC television reporter, evoked pre-revolutionary Boston last week on-air from the Chicago Board of Trade. His high-decibel tirade ripped President Obama's mortgage relief plan. "The government is promoting bad behavior," he said, insisting the public should vote "to see if we really want to subsidize the losers' mortgages." This plan, Santelli ranted, reminded him of Cuba, which "used to have mansions and a relatively decent economy" until it "moved from the individual to the collective." "

According to Taxpayers for Common Sense, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) requested $118 million in earmarks in fiscal year 2008. On Fox News Sunday yesterday, host Chris Wallace pressed Kyl about his earmarks, saying it is an example of how Republicans have lost credibility on the issue of spending restraint. Who are you to lecture the Democrats on spending? asked Wallace.

Kyl deflected the question, saying that they werent earmarks because earmarks have a specific definition:

WALLACE: And were putting up on the screen, Senator, your earmarks, a long list of them, according to the Taxpayers for Common Sense, totaling $118 million.

Question I think its a fair one who are you to lecture the Democrats on spending?

KYL: Well, first of all, I dont see on the screen what youre talking about. I can defend everything that I have recommended in the budget, and I would suggest that theyre not earmarks under the definition, because we have a specific definition. "

" Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele took umbrage Saturday night when CNN's D.L. Hughley referred to radio host Rush Limbaugh as "the de facto leader of the Republican party."

"No he's not. I'm the de facto leader of the Republican party," Steele said. The RNC chief went on to call Limbaugh, who that very day delivered the keynote address to the Conservative Political Action Conference, a mere "entertainer" whose show is "incendiary" and "ugly."
(translation: he's embarrassing decent Republicans)

On his radio show today, Limbaugh fired back, calling the RNC and Michael Steele "so-called Republicans" and saying that they "need a little leadership." (translation: they need me)

"So I am an entertainer and I have 20 million listeners because of my great song and dance routine," Limbaugh said. "Michael Steele, you are head of the Republican National Committee. You are not head of the Republican party. Tens of millions of conservatives and Republicans have nothing to do with the Republican National Committee...and when you call them asking for money, they hang up on you." (translation: Republicans are all talk but too cheap to give cash)

"I hope that changes," Limbaugh continued. "It's time, Mr. Steele, for you to go behind the scenes and start doing the work that you were elected to do instead of being some talking-head media star. (translation: the spotlight is mine, Steele)

I caught some of the Limbaugh show today, and I've never heard old pigboy more shrill. I had try hard to concentrate on my driving, it was so comical. Sort of reminded me of our little buddy Cybil when she gets caught posting as one of her crew members.

Within two weeks, government lawyers were already discussing ways to wiretap U.S. conversations without warrants.

The Bush administration eventually abandoned many of the legal conclusions, but the documents themselves had been closely held. By releasing them, President Barack Obama continued a house-cleaning of the previous administration's most contentious policies.

"Too often over the past decade, the fight against terrorism has been viewed as a zero-sum battle with our civil liberties," Attorney General Eric Holder said in a speech a few hours before the documents were released. "Not only is that school of thought misguided, I fear that in actuality it does more harm than good."

The Obama administration also acknowledged in court documents Monday that the CIA destroyed 92 videos of involving terror suspects, including interrogations _ far more than had been known. Congressional Democrats and other critics have charged that some of the harsh interrogation techniques amounted to torture, a contention President George W. Bush and other Bush officials rejected.

The new administration pledged on Monday to begin turning over documents related to the videos to a federal judge and to make as much information public as possible. "

He allowed her compatriots to compile a wish list of pet projects under the guise of stimulating the economy, which she and her cronies in the Senate then rammed through Congress without any of them knowing fully what was inside using scare tactics and threatening doom if we didn't hurry up and approve her pork package.

After a three-day vacation less than one month into the job, Barack Obama signed this bill, the largest spending bill in world history, into law. . . without reading it.

Then President Obama placed Joe Biden in charge of this massive spending plan. This he did, even though his Senate peers thought so little of Biden's skills over the course of his 33-year Senate career that he was never given a leadership role not mandated by seniority.

Our new President taxes and spends, and the more taxing and spending he proposes, the more the economy nosedives. Investors have had NO confidence in anything he has done.

Mr. Obama has now issued the first budget he has ever proposed at any level of government. This budget is nothing more than another deficit-spending spree one so vast, so expansive, that its kind has been unseen since WWII.

Obama and his allies in Congress plan to continue raising taxes and increasing both government growth and power, during a time that both history and economics tells us government should be slashing expenses, lowering taxes, and removing obstacles that keep businesses from creating more jobs. Raising taxes on anyone during a recession is just ludicrous. That will result in LESS money in the economy.
Raising taxes on small businesses only results in more job losses or higher costs past onto consumers. In addition, his "green" energy proposal raises carbon costs instead of making the green energy cheaper. This will just result in higher energy costs for all of us, not the companies.

Our young and charismatic President, in his fresh and glowing glory, is trying to spend his way out of debt with one massive spending plan after another; even though history shows that is not the course to take.

But you can't make a nation's economy grow by taxing it into ruin, or spending it into oblivion, and it is madness to think otherwise.

So go on, keep ranting about Limbaugh and other TV commentators who have no say in our government and economy. Unfortunately, unlike TV, we can't change the channel and get a different government. "

Not that Jim Cramer is the only person they have to convince, but they have to convince people that they know what they're doing, that they're not just feeling their way forward." For example, Steele made his blasphemous comments on Saturday and apologized on Monday afternoon, for a hang time of about 42 hours. WSJ (March 3 2009) As 2009 opened, three weeks before Barack Obama took office, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 9034 on January 2, its highest level since the autumn panic. Yesterday the Dow fell another 4.24% to 6763, for an overall decline of 25% in two months and to its lowest level since 1997. The dismaying message here is that President Obama's policies have become part of the economy's problem.

....Most of his "stimulus" spending was devoted to social programs, rather than public works, and nearly all of the tax cuts were devoted to income maintenance rather than to improving incentives to work or invest.

His Treasury has been making a similar mistake with its financial bailout plans. The banking system needs to work through its losses, and one necessary use of public capital is to assist in burning down those bad assets as fast as possible. Yet most of Team Obama's ministrations so far have gone toward triage and life support, rather than repair and recovery.

" Ok Locke maybe I'm not as edumucated as you and shore can't cipher as well either, but here goes.

First off, why should anyone have to pay a larger percentage of their income than others? How is that fair? After Obama raises taxes on businesses and the carbon cap kicks in, who do you think is going to be hit by those costs? Industry will pass on the added costs to the consumers, so that $13 week will only go to pay for your utilities and gas. Sorry, do the math. How will he pay for his trillions in social programs ans cut taxes for 95% of us? Not gonna happen.

Some examples off the web:

A 63-year-old attorney based in Lafayette, La., who asked not to be named, told ABCNews.com that she plans to cut back on her business to get her annual income under the quarter million mark should the Obama tax plan be passed by Congress and become law. So far, Obamas tax plan is being looked at skeptically by both Democrats and Republicans and therefore may not pass at all.

But wait, theres more:

Dr. Sharon Poczatek, who runs her own dental practice in Boulder, Colo., said that she too is trying to figure out ways to get out of paying the taxes proposed in Obamas plan.

Ive put thought into how to get under $250,000, said Poczatek. It would mean working fewer days which means having fewer employees, seeing fewer patients and taking time off.

Generally it means being less productive, she said.

The motivation for a lot of people like me dentists, entrepreneurs, lawyers is that the more you work the more money you make, said Poczatek. But if Im going to be working just to give it back to the government its de-motivating and demoralizing.

Now thats going to help us get out of the recession! Punish hard-working professionals and convince them to cut back services for the rest of us. Great thinking Mr. President. Or, to paraphrase George W. Bush: Heck of a job, Barack!

When you punish the productive, you get less productivity. Obama is selling the mindset that high earners are bad Americans who should be treated as such.

Ill just add that to the extent the withdrawal of high-earners pushes markets down, it inflicts a lot of pain on non-rich demographics via declines in 401(k)and IRA accounts, etc. This is likely to lower satisfaction with Obama, too.

Bush lowered it in the midst of the last recession and the economic upheaval after 9/11 to prompt investors to put their money at risk. Obama's hike from 15% to 20% on capital-gains taxes assumes that people will invest and cash out in the same manner they do at 15%. They wont.

Raising the tax on investment gains will ensure that we see less investment at the very moment that we need MORE of investment.

Jobs get created by investors taking risks, and if the reward on risk taking becomes low enough, theyll sink their money into safer havens instead of building job-creating businesses. Increasing the tax will discourage investors and encourage them to shift money out before the hike.

Not only will the extra revenue vanish, but investment levels will drop, leading to job losses and less opportunity for American businesses. "

What Ive said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody elses out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; its just that it will bankrupt them because theyre going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas thats being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing Ive said with respect to coal, I havent been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

Its just that it will bankrupt them."

OBAMA (Feb 27, 2009): "And so I want to be very clear: We sent our troops to Iraq to do away with Saddam Husseins regime and you got the job done. We kept our troops in Iraq to help establish a sovereign government and you got the job done. And we will leave the Iraqi people with a hard-earned opportunity to live a better life that is your achievement; that is the prospect that you have made possible."

HERE'S MY FAVORITE PART, KIDS:

"Thanks in great measure to your service, the situation in Iraq has improved. Violence has been reduced substantially from the horrific sectarian killing of 2006 and 2007. Al Qaeda in Iraq has been dealt a serious blow by our troops and Iraqs Security Forces, and through our partnership with Sunni Arabs. The capacity of Iraqs Security Forces has improved, and Iraqs leaders have taken steps toward political accommodation. The relative peace and strong participation in Januarys provincial elections sent a powerful message to the world about how far Iraqis have come in pursuing their aspirations through a peaceful political process...."

" RUSH JOB: INSIDE DEMS' LIMBAUGH PLAN

POLITICO (March 4 2009) Top Democrats believe they have struck political gold by depicting Rush Limbaugh as the new face of the Republican Party, a full-scale effort first hatched by some of the most familiar names in politics and now being guided in part from inside the White House.

The strategy took shape after Democratic strategists Stanley Greenberg and James Carville included Limbaughs name in an October poll and learned their longtime tormentor was deeply unpopular with many Americans, especially younger voters. Then the conservative talk-radio host emerged as an unapologetic critic of Barack Obama shortly before his inauguration, when even many Republicans were showering him with praise.

Soon it clicked: Democrats realized they could roll out a new GOP bogeyman for the post-Bush era by turning to an old one in Limbaugh, a polarizing figure since he rose to prominence in the 1990s.

Limbaugh is embracing the line of attack, suggesting a certain symbiosis between him and his political adversaries.

The fears intensified when press secretary Robert Gibbs, announcing British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's visit to the White House, demoted the Churchillian phrase "special relationship" to a mere "special partnership" across the Atlantic.

And the alarm bells really went off when Brown's entourage landed at Andrews Air Force Base on Monday night. Obama, breaking with precedent, wouldn't grant the prime minister the customary honor of standing beside him in front of the two nations' flags for the TV cameras.

Since Bush and Cheney are gone, the Democratic party needs someone new to direct the liberal media to attack and it appears that they have selected Rush Limbaugh. People need to wake up and notice that ensuing payments on the national debt will take up our ENTIRE GNP.

" Excerpts from op ed piece in the WSJ from Peggy Noonan, Partisan Republican and former Reagan speech writer:

I think the president, politically, has three big things going for him as he faces this crisis.

First, legitimacy. Our last two presidents were haunted by the circumstances of their election, and significant swathes of the country never fully accepted them. George W. Bush had the cloud of the 2000 recount, and his loss that year of the popular vote; Bill Clinton won in 1992 with only 43% , in a three-man race in which the other two were, essentially, Republican. But no one doubts Mr. Obama's legitimacy. He won by seven points, with 53%. He's the first president without the illegitimacy cloud since Bush I.

Second, we're in the middle of an emergency. In times like this, Americans want their president to succeed. Politically the crisis works for Mr. Obama.

Third is an unspoken public sense that we cannot afford another failed presidency, that we just got through one and a second would be terrible. Americans know how much good a successful presidency does for us in the world, in the public mind. The last unalloyed, inarguable success was Reagan. We need another. Liberal? Conservative? That, to the great middle of America, would, at the moment, be secondary. They want successful. They want "That worked." They want the foreign visitor to say, "I like your president." They want to respond, "So do I."

Some Republicans actually get it. "

" OBAMA'S SAFETY NET: THE TELEPROMPTER

POLITICO (March 5 2009) Obamas reliance on the teleprompter is unusual not only because he is famous for his oratory, but because no other president has used one so consistently and at so many events, large and small.

-After the teleprompter malfunctioned a few times last summer and Obama delivered some less-than-soaring speeches, reports surfaced that he was training to wean himself off of the device while on vacation in Hawaii. But no such luck.

-The presidents teleprompter also elicited some uncomfortable laughter after he announced Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as his choice for Health and Human Services secretary. "Kathy," Obama said, turning the podium over to Sebelius, who waited at the microphone for an awkward few seconds while the teleprompters were lowered to the floor and the television cameras rolled.

-Obama has relied on a teleprompter through even the shortest announcements and when repeating the same lines on his economic stimulus plan that he's been saying for months whereas past presidents have mostly worked off of notes on the podium except during major speeches, such as the State of the Union.

-In a break from his routine, Obama did not use a teleprompter during his pre-Inauguration speech at a factory in Bedford Heights, Ohio and his delivery seemed to suffer. He paused too long at parts. He accentuated the wrong words. And overall he sounded hesitant and halting as he spoke from the prepared remarks on the podium.

-But be it extra precaution, style or a mental crutch, Obama has shown in the past that he needs the teleprompter. And while he still has his prepared remarks placed on the podium in a leather folder, the White House has shown no sign of trying to wean him off of it.

-"He uses them to death," a television crewmember who also covered the White House under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush said of the teleprompter. "The problem is, he never looks at you. Hes looking left, right, left, right not at the camera. Its almost like hes not making eye contact with the American people."

Radio host Rush Limbaugh has been vocal about his displeasure with President Obama's policies.

Democrats fired out two political e-mails about Limbaugh on Thursday morning, calling him the face of the GOP, and Republicans sent out one of their own, demanding that the White House "come clean" about and apologize for a "political attack game."

An e-mail sent on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee states: "Rush Limbaugh is the leading voice of the Republican Party. Make no mistake. When Rush says jump, congressional Republicans say how high?"

The committee says that while President Obama has reached out a hand to Republicans, the GOP has "preferred to kowtow to extremists like Limbaugh rather than accept the good faith outreach of our president."

WASHINGTON (AP) (March 5 2009) -- Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's top pick to be his deputy withdrew from consideration Thursday, a setback for the agency as it confronts the worst financial crisis in decades. Annette Nazareth, a former senior staffer and commissioner with the Securities and Exchange Commission, withdrew after several interviews and vetting of her financial history, a person familiar with Nazareth's decision said.

(CNN) (March 5 2009) -- Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's chief medical correspondent, has withdrawn his name from consideration as surgeon general of the United States, an administration official said Thursday. "Sanjay Gupta was under serious consideration for the job of surgeon general," the official said in an e-mail. So what's the big deal?

Czars are not accountable to Congress or to Cabinet officials and rarely testify before congressional committees. These Czar will not go through confirmation hearings, and they are not accountable to the public.

So why is Obama doing it?

Well Democrat Senator Byrd thinks that Obama's Administration is tying to accumulative more power through these Czars and assert more control.

This is in direct conflict with Obama's commitment to openness and transparency.

" Democrats and the liberal left seem to need a figure to concentrate their hat on. I finally remembered what this whole situation reminds me of, "1984" by George Orwell.

"The program of the Two Minutes Hate varied from day to day, but there was none in which Goldstein was not the principal figure. He was the primal traitor...All subsequent crimes against the Party, all treacheries, acts of sabotage, heresies, deviations, sprang directly out of his teaching. Somewhere or other he was still alive and hatching his conspiracies, perhaps somewhere beyond the sea, under the protection of his foreign paymasters perhaps even -- so it was occasionally rumoured in some hiding place in Oceania itself."

Orwell saw this coming. He illustrates how regimes with tentative hold over beleaguered populations deflect anger away from their own corruptions and mistakes with the deployment of a greatly embellished, even invented, external enemy. Look at Obama and His references to his "inherited" problem, to bankers, greedy Wall Street and his "predecessor" are all too common, not to mention Limbaugh and Hannity.

But Bush is gone now. And Obama has no specific "Goldstein" to whom he can shift blame and/or deflect attention. But, he still tries to use Bush when possible. For example, last Monday when the market really tanked, the talking heads on TV were starting to question which direction we were heading. How did Obama's administration respond? They release supposed secret Bush anti-terror memos. It was much ado over nothing, but who cares what the article actually said: It generated a nice headline -- "Obama releases secret Bush anti-terror memos" -- during a day the populace might have been thinking disloyal thoughts about their president's direction and we can't have that.

Jim Cramer, Rush Limbaugh, & Rick Santelli have all been singled out by President Obama's press shop in the course of less than two weeks. Why is this? They don't want you to realize that they have spent more in 2 months than Bush did in 8yrs, fighting two wars and dealing with Katrina.

Funny how we never heard this type of behavior out of the GOP. In fact, few assaults on those that were in the political opposition. Never once was Keith Olberman, Bill Mahr or a host of others called out from the White House Press Secretary's podium. In fact, they were mostly, if not completely ignored. But obviously the same can't be said of the Obama White House. With two wars and economic trouble, one would think the White House would have more important things to do. "

It's becoming apparent that the man has never led so much as a Cub Scout troop. The Obama administration seems like a monument to incompetence. Consider the multiple appointment fiascos. Consider his treatment of Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of the country that has been our staunchest ally. Consider, if you can stand it, the economy: That sucking sound from the U.S. stock market tells us what the market makes of Obamas plans to raise taxes on the evil rich, the middle class, and small businesses. It reminds us what the market thinks of his efforts to shove the coal industry into a death spiral with absurd cap-and-trade carbon emissions regulations. This post was absolutely brilliant and summed up what is happening regarding Rush now and the difference in how the Bush administration handled their critics (like grownups and not schoolyard bullies). This should have been a letter to the editor, Ed.

I am continually amused by those in the media on the left who now tell us that we must by all means support our president no matter what. Oddly they did not seem to find this important when Bush was president. And HP and TQ don't come back and tell me that Bush did not deserve to be supported and Obama does when you cannot and have yet to give concrete answers as to how what Obama is doing is going to help move this country forward and out of this recession. "

You might want to check out the article from CBS on line regarding the results of the stimulus deal in one city, RWB. I'm sure you will see it as socialism, but at least Obama is getting something going and not sticking his head in the sand like his predecessor did. As stories like this unfold, I wonder how you Obama bashers will react to good economic news? It will no doubt take some time, so in the mean time keep throwing your whiny little hissy fits. "

We don't know if the stimulus package will work, RWB. The article I pointed out to you does seem to indicate a good possibility that it will. It's too soon to tell.

Now how about you explaining why the last eight years of deregulation and cutting taxes for the wealthy helped in any way?

If that had been the way to go, why did Bush initiate stimulus checks and putting billions into the private economy like he did in his last days in office?

The simple truth is that none of us know is this will work or not, and yes leaving things alone might have been the way to go, but the American public overwhelmingly rejected Republican ideas and put a Democrat in office. Therefore he has the responsibility to do what he thinks is right.

I know that the majority of the people in this country hope and pray he's right.

Wanting to see America fail seems rather unpatriotic to me. Yes, I know that Limbaugh and his cohorts are saying it's Obama socialists ideas they want to see fail, but you and I know they pray for his failure. Just look at the gleeful strutting we see on this very site at any misstep this current administration has made.

I see that as the difference is the Bush bashers and the Obama bashers. Most of us who went after Bush did so because of the war in Iraq, but I don't recall seeing or hearing anyone praying and hoping to see the war fail. Did you?

Most Democrats, including myself, agreed with his decision to go into Afghanistan. Bush had the support of this country after 9/11. Many of us saw his going into Iraq as wrongheaded. Personally I think Bush relied on his aides too much, and they all too often they gave him poor advice. I saw his refusal to pardon Libby, despite the pleas from Cheney, as a payback for this.

Unlike Bush, I think Obama is his own man, and will ultimately turn out the better leader.

Many prominent Republicans, granted the more extreme ones, have gone on record saying the want to see Obama fail, and I find his sad. "

" (Harry - "We don't know if the stimulus package will work, RWB.")

It's been tried before with the New Deal in the 30's and in several countries since, all were failures. In the 90's it failed miserably in Japan and they never did recover fully. Keynesian Economics does not work. Keynes even admitted that the only way his plan could realistically work in a democracy was in the context of a unified War effort.

("Now how about you explaining why the last eight years of deregulation and cutting taxes for the wealthy helped in any way?")

The main culprit in the economic meltdown Harry, was the REGULATORY changes made in to the Community Reinvestment Act in 1995 by Bill Clinton and with the GSE sub-prime mortgage institutions: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The problem was further magnified when Clinton encouraged all of these unstable loans to be released onto the world market as derivatives. As the much predicted problem worsened, congressional Democrats fought any and ALL efforts to INCREASE REGULATIONS on this reckless system. The heart of this problem was not deregulation, it was and is the present REGULATIONS.

And the Obama Administration has done nothing to correct this on-going disaster.

("Therefore he has the responsibility to do what he thinks is right.")

Obama's not doing what's right- he's doing what's politically advantageous. And he's doing it in the most cynical Machiavellian way possible.

Remember what Rahm Emanuel recently said about the economic meltdown- "Rule One: Never allow a crisis to go to waste. They are opportunities to do big things,"

("Most of us who went after Bush did so because of the war in Iraq, but I don't recall seeing or hearing anyone praying and hoping to see the war fail. Did you?")

The Iraq War still goes on, and contrary to his campaign promises, Obama is NOT removing the troops for years to come. He's simply renaming them "Non-Combat" even though their mission is exactly the same as it was under Bush.

So where's the outrage on the Left, Harry?

All of a sudden the Iraq War doesn't matter anymore, does it.

And you people didn't need to pray that the War would fail- oh no no Harry. You simply DEEMED it a failure early on.

Didn't I read endless posts from all you Liberals predicting utter failure for the Surge? Didn't I read countless statements disregarding ALL reports of success as mere Bush lies, Harry? Didn't I read your very own disparaging and rude comments towards General Petraeus?

Does the phrase "General Betray-us" ring a bell Harry?

("Unlike Bush, I think Obama is his own man, and will ultimately turn out the better leader.")

Read Obama's speech at Camp Lejeune from last week, Harry.

Read it slowly and carefully Harry. Obama not only contradicts all of his past oppositions on Iraq, he actually praises the overwhelming success of the Iraq War. He (unbelievably) exonerates Bush without mentioning Bush by name.

Obama: "And so I want to be very clear: We sent our troops to Iraq to do away with Saddam Husseins regime and you got the job done. We kept our troops in Iraq to help establish a sovereign government and you got the job done. And we will leave the Iraqi people with a hard-earned opportunity to live a better life that is your achievement; that is the prospect that you have made possible."

Kinda sounds like.....Bush....doesn't it Harry? "
