Stew-Stras youth claims Shelby bee

WINDSOR — A Stewardson-Strasburg seventh-grader who said he studied the whole booklet was the winner of the Shelby County Spelling Bee on Monday.

Tristan Mummel defeated almost 20 other spellers from five Shelby County schools to progress to the Herald & Review Regional Spelling Bee on March 21 at Millikin University.

Tristan also won the county spelling bee in 2008.

“This time I just studied the whole booklet,” said Mummel, who said spelling generally comes easy to him.

Advancing with Mummel is eighth-grader Sarah Mummel of Windsor. While Sarah and Tristan don’t know each other, both do know how to spell.

“I just looked at the words and studied,” Sarah Mummel said.

It was “matinee” that removed Sarah from the competition.

“I blanked on it,” she said.

Still, even the losers had fun.

“It was a good time,” said Windsor seventh-grader Peyton Welton. “I moved here from Effingham and this was my first time. It was fun.”

Tristan and Sarah will be studying for the regional bee and a chance to go to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

“I know about the regional bee from last year so I’m prepared,” Tristan said. “I hope I get to go all the way.”

" Congratulations to Tristan Mummel for a fine accomplishment. You show that hard work pays off in the end. Studying the whole book took a lot of time and effort, but anything you want to excell at will take time and effort. You have made your parents, friends, community, and your school proud. Good luck to you at the March 21 contest at Millikin. Keep up the hard work. "

" It would be wonderful if Sharon Barricklow could report an accurate article. There were 2 winners with no misspelled words between Sarah Mummel and Tristan Mummel. Sarah did not misspell matinee and she did not say that she blanked on it. Once again, inaccurate reporting from an amateur can really take away from a girl's hard work, confidence and self esteem when she studied the whole book too. But she is not given credit for a job well done and many, many hours of studying!
But as the person in charge stated there were NO losers there- they all made a big accomplishment to get to the County Bee! Congratulations Sarah and Tristan and good luck at the Regionals!! "
