LETTER: Headline on Burris 'politically motivated'

DAVID REED, Charleston

Yet another apparently politically motivated misleading headline showed up on the page 3 Burris story Monday. “Lawmakers” in general did not call for an investigation of Roland Burris.

Two Republican politicans called for an investigation. Nobody else did. Your headline implies that more than Republican politics was involved. No other legislators are even quoted in the story.

Those two GOP political operatives still are trying to rewrite Illinois law to what they hope will be their political advantage: They think that the goofball Illinois governor we just got rid of has tarnished the Democrats enough to give them a chance in an election to take the once-vacant Obama seat in the U.S. Senate.

That boat has sailed, of course. But they’re politicians and that’s what politicians of that ilk do. They haven’t figured out that Illinois government needs to use its energies to solve its real problems.

What’s not understandable is that our newspaper would fail its readers yet again. Bad enough to use a poor excuse for reporting from the usually reliable Associated Press. Worse is to mislead all those subscribers who just read headlines and move on.

DAVID REED

As to Burris, since a senator is supposed to represent all the folks in Illinois, what is the problem with all the folks in Illinois being able to elect him/her? "

Tom, I thought you promised to give up telling jokes on here. Oh, wait a minute, you really do think people like Limbaugh and Hannity are fair and balanced, right?

I have no problem believing that you get ALL of your information from Fox news as well your "news" from the like of Limbaugh and Hannity.

" OBAMA'S PENTAGON REVIEW: GITMO MEETS THE STANDARDS OF THE GENEVA CONVENTION

Washington Post (Feb 20 2009) A Pentagon review of conditions in the Guantanamo Bay military prison has concluded that the treatment of detainees meets the requirements of the Geneva Convention but that prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction with one another, according to a government official who has read the 85-page document.

The report, which was ordered by President Obama, was prepared by Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, and has been delivered to the White House. Obama requested the review as part of an executive order on the planned closure of the prison at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base on the southeastern tip of Cuba.

HOPE AND CHANGE ADMINISTRATION: DETAINEES HAVE "NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS"

Detainees being held at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan cannot use US courts to challenge their detention, the US says.

BBCNEWS (Feb 21 2009) The justice department ruled that some 600 so-called enemy combatants at Bagram have no constitutional rights.

Most have been arrested in Afghanistan on suspicion of waging a terrorist war against the US.

The move has disappointed human rights lawyers who had hoped the Obama administration would take a different line to that of George W Bush.

If all the governors of all the States accept the Porkulus money, does that automatically validate the effectiveness of this bureaucratic stimulus?

Or does it just help spread the blame across a bi-partisan political landscape, and thereby gives the perfect bi-partisan political cover when this spending proves to be disastrous?

Of course not every Republican Governor is accepting ALL of Porkulus:

Gov. Jindal rejects $98 million in stimulus money for Louisiana

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Friday that he will decline stimulus money specifically targeted at expanding state unemployment insurance coverage, becoming the first state executive to officially refuse any part of the federal governments payout to states...

"The federal money in this bill will run out in less than three years for this benefit and our businesses would then be stuck paying the bill," Jindal said. "We must be careful and thoughtful as we examine all the strings attached to the funding in this package. We cannot grow government in an unsustainable way."

As Allahpundit says - Hell accept cash for transportation infrastructure and a modest increase in unemployment benefits but drew the line at unemployment insurance lest it mean a $12 million tax hike for Louisiana businesses three years from now.

The left will naturally hammer him for hating the poor or, per Jim Clyburn, black people but by framing it as a savings to businesses he can sell it as something thatll produce more employment in the long run. "

-"Rendition"- is bureaucratese for the CIA's practice of kidnapping terrorist suspects and sending them to secret detention centres out of the public eye and reach of the US justice system.

From The LATimes - Under executive orders issued by Obama recently, the CIA still has authority to carry out what are known as renditions, secret abductions and transfers of prisoners to countries that cooperate with the United States.

-"Extradition"- is the official process by which one nation or state requests and obtains from another nation or state the surrender of a suspected or convicted criminal.

From The Washington Post - As the long-delayed British extraditions show, it is extraordinarily difficult to bring international terrorism suspects to justice by prosecuting them in U.S. civilian courts. The cases underscore the challenge facing President-elect Barack Obama as he tries to find a way to close the Navy prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and end the military tribunals set up by the Bush administration to handle terrorism cases from abroad.

Britain and other allies have long complained about Guantanamo, the tribunals and extralegal U.S. tactics used to fight al-Qaeda. At the same time, however, they have often blocked or resisted efforts by the U.S. government to prosecute accused terrorists in federal court.

Other allies have also been reluctant to extradite terrorism suspects for trial in the United States, sometimes letting them go free instead.

" OBAMA ADMINISTRATION MAINTAINS BUSH POSITION ON 'EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION' LAWSUIT

ABCNEWS (Feb 9 2009) The Obama Administration today announced that it would keep the same position as the Bush Administration in the lawsuit Mohamed et al v Jeppesen Dataplan, Inc.

A source inside of the Ninth U.S. District Court tells ABC News that a representative of the Justice Department stood up to say that its position hasn't changed, that new administration stands behind arguments that previous administration made, with no ambiguity at all. The DOJ lawyer said the entire subject matter remains a state secret.

This is not going to please civil libertarians and human rights activists who had hoped the Obama administration would allow the lawsuit to proceed.

*UPDATE*

The ACLU says the Obama administration reneged on civil liberties, offers "more of the same."

Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU said of the decision: "Eric Holders Justice Department stood up in court today and said that it would continue the Bush policy of invoking state secrets to hide the reprehensible history of torture, rendition and the most grievous human rights violations committed by the American government. This is not change. This is definitely more of the same. Candidate Obama ran on a platform that would reform the abuse of state secrets, but President Obamas Justice Department has disappointingly reneged on that important civil liberties issue. If this is a harbinger of things to come, it will be a long and arduous road to give us back an America we can be proud of again."

Ben Wizner, a staff attorney with the ACLU, who argued the case for the plaintiffs said, "We are shocked and deeply disappointed that the Justice Department has chosen to continue the Bush administrations practice of dodging judicial scrutiny of extraordinary rendition and torture. This was an opportunity for the new administration to act on its condemnation of torture and rendition, but instead it has chosen to stay the course. Now we must hope that the court will assert its independence by rejecting the governments false claims of state secrets and allowing the victims of torture and rendition their day in court."

Lets go back to where you said that it was illegal to bring subjects of rendition back to the US. You cited an LA Times article which clearly did not say that it was illegal. Then as further proof that it is illegal you offer up another article from the WAPO that discusses extradition. One of the sources you cited clearly said that outlawing renditions had never been voted on by the Senate. The other source is completely off the subject of rendition.
You can dodge and weave and spin like James Carville, but the fact is, you were wrong about the illegality of bringing rendition subjects back to this country. "

"Rendition"- is bureaucratese for the CIA's practice of kidnapping terrorist suspects and sending them to secret detention centers out of the public eye AND REACH OF THE U.S. JUSTICE SYSTEM.

Now tell me, arrass, why are terrorists (Extraordinary Rendition) suspects (BY DEFINITION) sent to foreign countries in the first place?

Why are they (BY DEFINITION) kept away from THE U.S. JUSTICE SYSTEM?

Then tell me why Extraordinary Rendition suspects aren't automatically sent back to the United States?

Then explain to me WHY Obama is EXPANDING Bush's use of Extraordinary Rendition (kidnapping terrorist suspects and sending them to secret detention centers out of the public eye AND OUT OF THE REACH OF THE U.S. JUSTICE SYSTEM? "

BlueDogDemocrat wrote on Feb 22, 2009 10:54 PM:

" From The American Civil Liberties Union web site-

Fact Sheet: Extraordinary Rendition

Beginning in the early 1990s and continuing to this day, the Central Intelligence Agency, together with other U.S. government agencies, has utilized an intelligence-gathering program involving the transfer of foreign nationals suspected of involvement in terrorism to detention and interrogation in countries where -- in the CIA's view -- federal and international legal safeguards do not apply. Suspects are detained and interrogated either by U.S. personnel at U.S.-run detention facilities outside U.S. sovereign territory or, alternatively, are handed over to the custody of foreign agents for interrogation. In both instances, interrogation methods are employed that do not comport with federal and internationally recognized standards. This program is commonly known as "extraordinary rendition."

++++++++++

Did you understand that arrass?

The definition and the purpose of "Rendition" of terrorists - is to send them to countries where federal and international legal safeguards do not apply for the sole purpose of using interrogation methods that do not comport with federal and internationally recognized standards.

So the entire purpose of practicing Extraordinary Rendition (BY DEFINITION) is to AVOID sending terrorist suspects back to the U.S. where certain interrogation methods are illegal.

++++++

More from The ACLU:

The Department of Justice's arguments notwithstanding, the extraordinary rendition program is illegal. It is clearly prohibited by the United Nations Convention Against Torture and Other Forms of Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment, ratified by the United States in 1992, and by congressionally enacted policy giving effect to CAT. As Congress made clear, it is the policy of the United States not to:

"expel, extradite, or otherwise effect the involuntary return of any person to a country in which there are substantial grounds for believing the person would be in danger of being subjected to torture, regardless of whether the person is physically present in the United States."

*sigh*

The entire purpose of Extraordinary Rendition- is to keep the terror suspect OUTSIDE OF THE U.S. JUSTICE SYSTEM so Intel can be extracted by extraordinary interrogation methods.

In addition to this, there are international legal hurdles in extraditing terror suspects back to the U.S., who are capture through rendition or other means. That was the point of the Washington Post article which stated:

"(Britain and) Other allies have also been reluctant to extradite terrorism suspects for trial in the United States, sometimes letting them go free instead."

The main controversy with rendition of terror suspects is the fact that they are kidnapped and then supposedly "tortured".

There's also the problem of subjecting terrorists to civilian trials where years worth of Intel networks could be exposed.

But let's be honest here, arrass- you never really understood the definition of Extraordinary Rendition- did you.

No, you didn't.

Wow Potter, I am amazed that you actually posted about an issue instead of just getting on here to insult someone.

Much of the Fed's money comes with strings attached requiring changes in state laws. For instance, the Feds want part-time people to get unemployment benefits among other things. In Louisiana, for example, the Governor said that when the Fed money runs out, businesses will saddled with a $12 million dollar tax hike. " Yep ed. You nailed Harry.

He's never been able to defeat the facts I've presented in any debate, so he has nothing left to do now but throw snot-wads from the peanut gallery.

If my arguments were really so void of fact and astray from reason and rationale, he wouldn't hesitate to jump upon those weaknesses and exploit them for all they're worth.
But on the contrary he has learned the hard way, NOT to debate me, because time and time again I have cited substantiated facts to destroy his stance.

In fact, the REAL reason Harry will not engage me in a debate anymore goes back to the last real one-on-one we had: I challenged his claim that Obama's Inauguration was funded by private donors. Not only did I cite evidence that Obama was actually relying heavily on Big Lobbyist Bundlers; I also nailed Harry's attempt to pass off a little-known Far-Left website as a legitimate source. Harry dug his hole even deeper when he then tried to accuse me of using the eeeevil FoxNews as my source; I of course, administered the knock-out punch by reminding him that my source was actually ABCNews as well as a few other Left-Stream sources.

Naturally I rubbed Harry's nose in it and he had a knicker-twisting hissy fit and called on all his "friends"/persona's to avoid any further debates with me because I was unreasonable and irrational.

So goes the fragile ego of Harry and the Left in here. Instead of taking their lumps and losing the debates as honest mature adults, they take the easy immature prepubescent route, and resort to schoolyard antics and hayseed mudslinging, just like the true little Cornfield Scholars that they are.

And if anyone doubts my analysis of them; just watch their response to this post. "

According to The Washington Times, 7,000 people attended last year and 9,000 are expected this year.

Last year President Bush and Cheney were the stars of the event. And Mitt Romney chose the conference to announce that he was suspending his campaign.

This year, Cheney and Bush are off the agenda, replaced by ghosts of the campaign trail like Joe the Plumber (Joe Wurzelbacher) and documentarian John Ziegler, who has been making the rounds to restore Sarah Palin's self-imposed media debacle with his documentary "Media Malpractice: How Obama Got Elected and Palin Was Targeted." And of course Rush Limbaugh will be there as the biggest draw.

from aunt Dorothy's favorite website-

And they wonder why they're in trouble. I'm sure Joe the plumbers helper will be full of ideas on how the GOP can get out of the hole they've dug for themselves.

After the dismal performance of Mr BoJingles the other night, I wonder if Joe will be the new spokesman for the party.

The new head of the RNC is ticking off his fellow Republicans so fast that he won't be around for long, and Sarah is too busy with he own scandals, Limbaugh can't take the pay cut, so it only makes sense for Joe to step up to the plate.

Come on Joe, do it for the Gipper. Who knows the GOP might help you with your delinquent taxes. Hey, they coughed up a 150 grand to outfit the Palin tribe. LOL! "

I like it and will probably be referring the BoJingles as the GOOP (extra O intentional) messiah from now on. Thanks for the idea.

After their Messiah's performance that may not be necessary, because the
GOOP might send him in limbo for a while.

Another example of GOOP HYPOCRISY! "

I repeat- So goes the fragile ego of Harry and the Left in here. Instead of taking their lumps and losing the debates as honest mature adults, they take the easy immature prepubescent route, and resort to schoolyard antics and hayseed mudslinging, just like the true little Cornfield Scholars that they are.

Thank you Harry for proving my point and validating my analysis of you.

Would you like try again with another response or two?

Of course you would. "

Get that? "Went along with," implying that someone else beguiled the poor little Republican lambs into evil, and all Republicans are guilty of is "going along with it."
Don't you just LOVE Republicans always taking "personal responsibility" by blaming someone else for their actions -- EVERY TIME? Do Republicans even understand the concept of personal responsibility? "

Budget projections now with Obama's fiscal plan include a 13.4 percent drop in government receipts this year, and an all-time high of $1.75 trillion deficit.

Forecasters surveyed by Blue Chip Economic Indicators in February predict that the GDP will fall by a 1.9 percent this year followed by 2.1 percent in 2010, another 2.9 percent in 2011, and 2.8 percenteach in both 2012 and 2013.

Grand total GDP loss under the Obamanation policies equals 11.7%!

injustice85 you need to go back and look better, borrow Harry's glasses if needed.
BDD posts what looks like reliable info and facts on here way MORE than most if not ALL of the people he is always debating with.
Most everyone has posted what looks like proof of lots of different things. Anyone can and WILL find faults and wrongs done by EVERY politician.
What I see EVERYONE doing is instead of saying yes you are right my person did that. You just post something the other guys man has done.
No one seems to have the guts to ADMIT that yes my party sucks also. Yes they have done wrongs. Yes they BLOW our money. Yes they treat ALL of us normal citizens with NO care or respect of OUR needs.
Come on guys step up ADMIT it, it there. Its been shown in here clear as day. Stop belittling a guy because of his party preferences. Only AGREE when someone shows what they have done. Then say yes thats RIGHT but look at this, then show where theirs has done the same thing or worse. Make where everyone in here LEARNS not just laughs. Keep all the racist slugs out of here. Stop the religion beatings. If you believe FINE. If you don't thats FINE also. One way or another will not make you a better person to me. Black,White,Yellow,Purple or Pink will make no difference to me. "

Wow, Blue Dog Democrat, according to Harry Potter you conjured me back again.

Did you summon me to post telepathically? Is that how that worked?

Oh I forgot though. When Potter has nothing of substance to say he reverts back to "the 5000 posters are really just one poster" schtick.

As you have such the multiplicity of pseudonyms to chose from BDD, yet you "summon me" back according to Harry Potter when you need some kind of help engaging the other liberal sycophants here...I guess I should be flattered in some kind of way ...due to Harry Potter's acknowledgement of me....

Harry Potter... you truly are a wizened old clown. I bet you felt all full of yourself to get posted once again, with a full article no less of heedless drivel, in the prestigious opinion section of TC-JC, didn't you?

Yeah whatever...

I'd say to "get a life"...but obviously that's impossible since it's already passed you by and that's why you spend such countless hours on these blogs...

This guy is beyond obsessed with me. In all my blogging experiences, I've honestly never seen anything quite like it.

I'm flattered when Harry associates you and me as one in the same Neo. The more he does this, the more people realize that he really has nothing of substance left to offer.

I don't receive the paper Neo; what did they post of Harry's? I would like to congratulate him on it.

I know how much it means to the little guy. It makes him feel all "grown-up" and confirms the fact that he really is a Cornfield Scholar. In fact, he's got the TinFoil Beanie to prove it.
