Obama to make stops in Peoria, Springfield

JG/T-C Springfield Bureau

SPRINGFIELD — President Barack Obama’s visit to central Illinois today marks his first return to the region since he used it as a backdrop in his historic run to the White House.

Obama will stop at the Caterpillar factory in East Peoria as part of his lobbying efforts on behalf of his economic stimulus package and then hop back aboard Air Force One for the 75-mile flight to Springfield for a dinner engagement in honor of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday.

In East Peoria, Obama will deliver a speech at the heavy equipment maker after meeting with a handful of Caterpillar employees.

The program for Obama’s remarks are scheduled to begin at 3:25 p.m. and are not open to the public.

In Springfield, Obama is expected to arrive in the capital city about 6:30 p.m. and be quickly escorted to the Crowne Plaza hotel on Springfield’s southeast edge for the 7 p.m. event.
