LETTER: U.S. must succeed if Obama is to be a success

LEONIDAS H. MILLER, Mattoon

Many of us wish to see the success of the Obama presidency as with all presidents. This wish, however, must be something that rests on the success of America. If America fails to succeed, then we cannot regard him as a successful president, cannot regard him as worthy of a second term.

A brief review of the Reagan presidency shows us a picture of recovery from adversity, leading to a triumphal prosperity. When first elected he faced with America a poor economy with a ” misery index” of high unemployment, high inflation, and high interest rates.

Except for the military, he did not create jobs. He removed the taxation and regulatory barriers to job creation, and from that private businesses created the jobs. As a benchmark of success, recovery was well on its way by 1984, making his re-election a certainty. This is the governing model we need today which would give America and Obama a shared success, barring another Sept. 11.

Unfortunately, what Congress has begun so far is far removed from Reagan’s ideal model of governing policy. The huge spending would require an extreme level of borrowing which our creditors may not be able to offer.

Japan, China, and Saudi Arabia may not have the money to lend to us. These countries have their own financial problems, some similar to our own. Hence, a previous notation that our government has already “maxed out the national credit card.” Again, the question we should be asking is by what right do we shift our mistakes onto the shoulders of future generations? Let us skin our own skunks and carry our own crosses.

During Reagan’s second term the highest income-tax rates were lowered to 28 percent. With it, revenue collections to the treasury continued to increase.

Reagan’s policies seemed too simplistic to some with their lack of central planning. However, his policies permitted new and complex social and economic action which spelled recovery and improvement.

LEONIDAS H. MILLER

" Have u ever tried to look for something MADE IN AMERICA? It is hard to find. Companies keep sending jobs to china and so forth to save money but how are we to purchase these things if our jobs in America are leaving. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Jobs having been leaving the U.S. for so long and now it has finally came to bite us back. Companies should bring back our jobs and manufacturing jobs also and employees should get a decent wage and then hopefully the U.S.can get back on track and be proud to buy something made in AMERICA.I get so tired buying things made in china. I would agree with that.

It's time for all of us to bring back personal responsibility. Starting with our finances. We all need to learn how to live within our means. "

I hate to be the one to tell you but...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A26402-2004Jun8?language=printer

The fiscal shift in the Reagan years was staggering. In January 1981, when
Reagan declared the federal budget to be "out of control," the deficit had reached almost $74 billion, the federal debt $930 billion. Within two years, the deficit was $208 billion. The debt by 1988 totaled $2.6 trillion. In those eight years, the United States moved from being the world's largest international creditor to the largest debtor nation.

Bush and congress WAS DOING REAGAN'S economic policies. Look where we are now! "

What?

Until George W Bush came along Reagan set an all time high for spending. Of course when this is pointed out, the right wing radicals all start shouting about how he had a Democratic congress. I guess in his confused state, Reagan must have misplaced his veto pen, huh? I wonder if Bush had the same problem?

Someone needs to tell Mr Miller that Reagan and Bush didn't practice what they preached. "

ed miller wrote on Feb 9, 2009 10:28 PM:

" You guys are all sitting here complaining about how much Reagan and Bush spent, yet you are strangely silent that congress wants to spend another TRILLION only months after spending 850 BILLION that nobody knows the whereabouts of. Obama stood up and lied to us saying that there were no earmarks in this thing. Only 7 percent of the Gazillions of dollars Congress is about to extract from your pocket would be injected into the economy by the end of fiscal year 2009. More than $200 billion of stimulus funds will be spent between fiscal year 2010 and fiscal year 2019 long after the recession is projected to be over. White House economic adviser, Larry Summers said that any stimulus must be targeted, timely and temporary.

Everybody noted how Obama stopped talking hope and change and started warning about catastrophe as soon as serious opposition to his profligate spending plan showed itself. He wants the money, he wants it now, and he wants it to spread the wealth around, pay back his constituents, and acclimate more people to government handouts. I won, Obama said when Republicans in the Senate had the gall to question the wisdom of his spending blowout. Yes, he won. But how about the rest of us? "

" On August 5, 2004, George W made the following statement: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." At the time, it was considered a "blunder". However, after reading some of these posts, it makes one realize that there is truth to this statement. Instead of looking at ways to make a vision work, we sit around and criticize and figure out ways to make it not work. Why not join together and work for the goal. Put some trust in the plan and make it a reality. After all, we gave George a 2 term chance to make it better. It surely can't get any worse. We need to come together and support a new plan. The old one just didn't work. "

Nope, not even close Mr. Miller. 75% of the bill would be spent in the first 18 months and they've compromised on the last 25% that wouldn't help in the immediate future, deciding to decide on it later after the initial stimilus gets on it's way. Please get your facts straight and stop listening to the GOP liars club. They are only trying to keep Karl Rove's tactics alive which is what is killing the GOP now. We've had enough of shear lies and propaganda already.

Secondly, we have to do SOMETHING! Our country couldn't possibly get into any more debt trouble. We are already bankrupt and have been for several years now. This bill will inject money for jobs right now which would get that money to businesses because those millions of new workers would have money to buy things. I'm not really happy with any of this and I still would like to hear a heck of a lot more about slashing much wasted spending along with this. But, we have to do something, even if it's wrong because we know doing nothing will destroy our economy and our country along with it. "

" Why do we have to do something, Becky? Many economists, the CATO institute and the CBO say we will be better off if we don't do anything. I don't feel comfortable having Nancy Pelosi tell me how to fix the economy. Today this thing passed the senate and the market tanked. Obviously, investors don't have confidence in it either. It has been proven in our history and overseas that spending won't fix this problem. There are too many pet projects in this bill and it doesn't offer long term stimulus. Now they are even talking about more TARP money. That is so typical that if it doesn't work the first time, try it again. This is a TRILLION dollars. We can't take it back if it doesn't work. The problem with Socialism, is that eventually you run out of people's money to use. "

Yes, he had a Democratic Congress, but the radical right ignored or have forgotten, that the budget sent back to Reagan never varied more than 1 or 2%
from what Reagan asked for. Believe it or not, THERE WERE YEARS WHEN THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS ***CUT*** Reagan's budget. But try to tell this to a true

Ed try to remember that the TARP money was voted during the GWB administration.
"They" then is not the same as "they" now.
[Yes I know GWB was hiding out in those days, but he urged it and signed the bill.] And the first half of it was distributed WHILE HE WAS PRESIDENT, distributed with NO SPECIFIED PURPOSES AND NO LIMIT ON USING IT FOR ACQUISITION OF OTHER BANKS AND/OR USING IT FOR BONUSES FOR EXECUTIVES WHO HAD FLUNKED THE COURSE. So those who got it pixxed it away, with little or no benefit to the general financial condition of the US. "

" in the 50's conservatives said power belonged in the lap of congress, then when nixon took office, suddenly they thought power should shift to the executive branch where a president could dictate policy and impose conservative religious values upon the people. that has lasted until november 2008. now we're seeing the shift again with them screaming about bringing more neoconservatives into congress....never happy, always looking to force ideas onto the american public.....they'll never change trying to force feed those who aren't like thinkers.

they've made academic achievement a thing to belittle. they've alienated the media who served them so well for 40-50 years, and now it's not what's best for americans, it's all about doing whatever it takes...today, at this point in time to win....regardless of financial or human costs.

the conservatives are a bane to this country, it's youth and the world in general. no wonder we have to expand visa laws to import intelligence...they've made our children almost braindead and broght our country to the verge of revolt. i would venture to say if obama had somehow lost the election, there'd be civil war here on our streets.

the best thing to do now is rally for 2010 and oust more. "

CATO?? These are folks who shut their eyes, stop up their ears and pretend all is hunky-dory.
If the CATO institute had been here 400 years ago we would have "don't do anything" and would still be a Commonwealth of Great Britain. "
