LETTER: Let Republicans say why they want US to fail

GREGORY JENNINGS, Mattoon

Then, the Republicans can explain why it is that they want our great nation to fail.

If that is how they really feel, they should all just pack it up and go home.

We’ll fix the country without their “help.”

GREGORY JENNINGS

" Perhaps the label you wish to attack is Conservatives, not necessarily Republicans. And by the way, Gregory, the issue is socialism versus capitalism, not Republicans versus Democrats. I can understand your confusion because, sadly, it's been hard to tell the difference between Republicans and Democrats for the last several years.

Oh, and Conservatives do not want our great nation to fail. In fact, they're very concerned right now that Obama's political agenda, if carried out to its fullest, will cause that to happen. It's Obama's political agenda that the Conservatives want to see stopped - before he totally erases the line between public service and private enterprise.

There, feel better now? Think of it this way, Gregory, we're the calvary for cryin out loud! You should thank your lucky stars that we're still going to be here to pick up the pieces after Obama has done everything he can to destroy us.

There, there. You'll be OK. "

Maybe it is time to quit the incessant Obama bashing, and to begin offering support to someone who will have a great impact on our lives for the next four to eight years.

If you want to offer some real, usable input that might help influence the issues you are concerned about, contact your representatives or go to the White House website. You can actually send your comments directly to those making the decisions. Instead of what usually goes on: a lot of solves nothing, muttering under the breath insults and innuendo from people who mostly have the political astuteness of an unripe tomato.

At the very least, you should probably consider doing some better background research about your topic before spouting out and showing everybody how ignorant you actually are. I have checked a lot of the so-called facts spewed about here, and they aren't anywhere close to being 100% accurate under scrutiny.

And for those who might read them who believe that if it is printed by the media, then it is true...caveat emptor. "

" The stimulus bill is the liberal justification for rewarding special interests during the election. It assumes that Washington politicians understand how to spend money better than individuals with families to feed and shareholders to please. It assumes it's better to move capital out of the private sector, give it to Washington politicians to place where they want.

It's not so much that capitalists want these policies to fail... it's that the policies WILL fail, as they have in other command economies over in the last century.

To really stimulate the economy, you'd cut corporate taxes to zero for a year (but leave the tax on capital gains), while balancing the federal budget by slashing spending - by starting with the defense budget, which is larger than the rest of the world's combined. That will attract global investments and jobs unlike anything we've ever seen. Global wealth creation is the best creator of peace anyway, not the military.

I hope Obama succeeds, but he'll only succeed by balancing the budget, like Clinton did (remember the 90s anyone??), allowing private capital to flow where it needs, and where it'll do the most good. "

The Question wrote on Feb 5, 2009 9:06 AM:

" Tell me, have you followed the world economy over the last few months? If so, you've seen Bushs corporate kleptocracy policies in action.
We have put this nation in hock to the Chinese to the tune of double-digit trillions. We have invaded and destroyed a country that presented no threat to this nation, at a cost of $3 billion a week and hundreds of thousands of lives. We have thrown another borrowed trillion at the corporate crooks who caused the global economic meltdown, as a reward for their efforts. We have kidnapped, secretly imprisoned and tortured people, guilty and innocent. We have buzz-sawed the protections enshrined in the Constitution of the United States, which had been one of the crowning achievements of civilization.
And we have done all these things because a monkey and his organ grinder vice president thought they would be a good idea.
The liberals are constantly reviled for being repeatedly proven correct. People who are dead wrong never forgive you for being right. "

I also like "Tom Andres" view on the support of our new president...well stated. It's kind of like the liberals supporting the troops (lol) but not the war. I support my president and wish him success on behalf of the country....I just don't support his policies and vision to get us working again. How is that so hard to understand for the liberals? He doesn't have a track record that I can embrace and trust in regards to what he wants to do. Then you compound that with the likes of Harry Reid and Pelosi...well, how can I not be at least skeptical in the remedies that are being touted?

I am a conservative, thus I believe Barney Frank, Christopher Dodd and Chuck Schumer and all the rest of the folks that created this melt-down should held accountable. This includes all the Fannie Mae ...Freddie Mac crowd as well as any CEO's and managers that worked in the fiancial arena that enabled and worked hand in hand with this group of "Washington leaders"?

I believe that at a 35% tax rate on our corporations we should lower that by 15% to 20%, I believe we should reward achievers and job creaters with lower taxes. I believe we should be looking to eliminate the death penalty tax...(or do only rich people die) at least for a couple years. I believe as always, we should continue to help those that can't (not won't) help themselves. I believe there should be tax breaks on any out of pocket expensives regarding health care not covered by insurance. And until the markets gain it's edge we should be looking at tax breaks on investment. I believe that if these spoken remedies were put into place all we would have to do is sit back and watch this country heal at sonic speed

I am a conservative first so politically I don't trust this congress nor the president, however if he neads me in a crisis in which conservatism is embraced...I'm there. And of course if our beloved country and/or he is under attack from afar with bad intentions towards all of us....I'm there...Thank you very much..Im here all day. "

When making accusations on here (for example, that the opposition is gunning for the president), it would be helpful to have specific examples. And, please, dont go down the race-baiting road. The gunning is not directed towards the president, but his liberal capitalist-destroying agenda.

As to contacting our representatives to help influence the issues, I think thats precisely whats going on. The websites of Durbin and Johnson are jammed with emails. The Burris website would also be jammed if he actually HAD a website.

Its true that there are outrageous claims and accusations made in some posts on here, but do not discount the readers ability to sort the wheat from the chaff. There are posters on all sides who do quite well at defining and debating the meat of the issues. Im sure you consider the name calling as counterproductive, and I agree; but you have to look past all that. Thats the chaff.

Rather than castigating the resident posters here, how about addressing the issues, shedding some light on whats happening in our nations capital? Address the issues, not the personalities. "

I remember that bizarre incident, TQ. It was strange to see the victim of Cheney's drunken shooting spree hold a press conference and apologize to the drunk who shot him.

Republicans are a strange breed indeed, after all look at what the tried to pass off as VP material the last go around. Sarah Palin made Dan Quayle look like a genius.

Sorry chewey, but the NAFTA concept was a Republican scheme to help corporate America maximize its profits at the expense of the working class. "Sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified," he conceded, after I reminded him that he had called NAFTA "devastating" and "a big mistake," despite nonpartisan studies concluding that the trade zone has had a mild, positive effect on the U.S. economy.

Obama's tone stands in marked contrast to his primary campaign's anti-NAFTA fusillades. The pact creating a North American free-trade zone was President Bill Clinton's signature accomplishment; but NAFTA is also the bugaboo of union leaders, grassroots activists and Midwesterners who blame free trade for the factory closings they see in their hometowns.

" What's the tab on democratic nation building just in Iraq, so far?

Stimulus packages are pork. Bailouts are pork. Bailout #1 was undercooked, pork, with hook worm, and a huge tapeworm. Some of the additional stipulations, might be seen as treating some of the intestinal discomfort.

When this kind of thing is lumped all together, outrage over it sees a peak. When it happens little by little, over periods of time, only bridge to nowhere type things, if that, get any back of the neck fur raised. Many of the same folks opposing this all at once infusion, snuck their pet projects in under the radar, when and where they could.

I have a spoiled pork provision that was in this, that I lost track of, my self. There was a provision to give especially the nations largest home builders a feel free to claim losses against the taxes on profits over the last five years. I haven't heard if its still in. It crossed my radar, and then disappeared. They were up to their eyes in creating the housing mess, and should be one of the last to get a penny for their now overextended crisis in collapse. Oil companies should be excluded from the taksie backsies on their profits taxes as well. Its strange how now that oil is less than 50 a barrel, Drill baby Drill, has fallen silent. The new head of the GOP was reportedly the one who coined or revived that slogan.

The stimulus should be seen as tube feeding the criticly ill, rather than the normal IV drip that was ok as long as it was snuck into something else, and not directly tied to anyone specificly proposing it, or voting for it.

Many a help the kids and kittens bill, could pass the mustard back home, even if it also had millions for re bricking the yellow brick road. Bring the pork out in the light of day, and that curtain flings open and fake outrage eminates over the completely outrageous thought of it.

This is a national package, all 50 states. If it reaches a trillion dollars, its only 20 billion per state. Illinois is looking at a deficit of 9 billion, many states have even bigger than that. They have not invested in roads and bridges much, for years. Do we just write 50 checks for 20 billion to each state, and trust the states to make the best use of the money? Do we split it up per capita by state, or how do we get 1 trillion dollars in the economy, and make sure some neglected things come of it, and jobs? "

I don't think you should be losing any sleep over Obama's aides, even.

I would remind you that it's the Reagan administration that still holds the record for the most cabinet members and tops aides having to leave the White house under a cloud of suspicion and disgrace.

Have you forgotten how many of them Bush the elder had to pardon to keep them from being prosecuted for their criminal acts?

So does that mean it was Ronald Reagans fault that he chose people with characters defects? Are you holding Obama to a higher standard that you held Reagan?

We don't know how history will view Obama, but I think it's pretty well established that Reagan is viewed favorably, despite having so many of his team forced out in disgrace, perhaps Obama will be regarded as a success too.

Perhaps we should wait a while before writing his political obituary. "

- Mona Sutphen, deputy White House chief of staff, was registered to lobby for clients, including Angliss International in 2003.

- Melody Barnes, domestic policy council director, lobbied in 2003 and 2004 for liberal advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, the American Constitution Society and the Center for Reproductive Rights.

- Cecilia Munoz, White House director of intergovernmental affairs, was a lobbyist as recently as last year for the National Council of La Raza, a Hispanic advocacy group.

- Michael Strautmanis, chief of staff to the presidents assistant for intergovernmental relations, lobbied for the American Association of Justice from 2001 until 2005.

There are all sorts of claims that Obama lied to the people and appointed people who were flawed. Don't they remember Iran-Contra under Reagan where more than a dozen people were convicted.
Reagan himself denied that he had traded money for hostages, but later PUBLICLY ADMITTED that he was wrong, that he had lied to the people. Remember George HW claimed he was "out of the loop" in an attempt to avoid being involved, but Weinberger had WRITTEN NOTES taken during meetings showing that HW was TELLING US ALL A LIE, so when it became obvious that Weinberger was going to come to trial under oath and tell that HW was NOT "out of the loop", HW pardoned him to save his own *****.
Rush Limbaugh, president of the Oxycontin League, A DRUGGIE who used influence to escape prosecution, meanwhile becomes the MESSIAH of the Republican Party. Has the OXYCONTIN MESSIAH made a positive comment of any kind about any variety of Stimulus? He has not. This blow-hard, this COWARD who slipped out of military service by a pimple on his XXX, can do nothing constructive, and only rant and rave, spreading falsehoods that are sucked up and repeated by the dittoheads who regard him as their MESSIAH.

But do not forget this: it was George Bush who doubled the national debt; it was George Bush who sold your country to Communist China {ever think what would happen if (a) they stopped buying our bonds or, worse, (b) threw them onto the world market}.

It was George Bush who passed the first Stimulus bill, with no restrictions, so CEOs could shower Billions in bonuses on their friends, do million dollar improvement on their offices (remember the CEO who said, "I just couldn't work in an office with the same decoration and furniture my predecessor used), and buy new multi-million corporate jets. George Bush, who was still in the White House,
made no complaints -- these folks were his friends and he was delighted to see them doing well.

I've had enough of the ignorant attacks I've read in these comments; I'm checking out and leaving the field to the MESSIAH Limbaugh and those who worship him. Anybody who, in the midst of the most desperate time in our country in the last 100 years, wishes FAILURE of the leader, if successful,
should be awarded a PRIZE: a hunting trip with Dick Cheney. "

AHEM!

From The TimesOnline (January 15, 2009)

In an unprecedented departure from the current wanted 'dead or alive policy,' the U.S. President-Elect said that simply keeping bin Laden holed up in a cave was enough to keep America safe.

"My preference obviously would be to capture or kill him," he said.

"But if we have so tightened his noose that he's in a cave somewhere and can't even communicate with his operatives then we will meet our goal of protecting America."

As recently as October 7, in a presidential debate, Mr Obama said: "We will kill bin Laden. We will crush al-Qaeda. That has to be our biggest national security priority."

Every action or inaction, has consequences. Some have far reaching consequences for years to come. This is true for everyone, including Presidents and their administrations. It might be all Gerald Fords fault, if he hadn't pardoned Nixon, the last 30 plus years would probably be a much different story all together.

9/11 was all Clintons fault, it happened over 8 months into GW's administration, so Obama should get at least 8 months full transition grace period, before anything is suddenly completely his fault.

The dominoes began to fall, over a year ago. Now the chain reactions, are in motion. Many US jobs are dependant on other jobs existance for them to be needed. Many support industries, are built solely on demand created by other jobs. Until something stops the chian reactions, the dominoes will continue to fall and knock the next one down. The more that fall, the more chains in multiple directions are set in motion.

It won't be long, before throwing one trillion dollars at this will do nothing to stop the chain reactions. If we aren't past that point already, is impossible to tell. Doing nothing, will definitely see all of them fall and then see whats left to rebuild something from.

Trickle down economics might not work as presented, but the trickle down crisis, that comes from its complete and utter failure, is notably astounding. We are hitting past records for unemployment by the month, our population is slightly larger, and we should be well past the great depression, well before the september it wasn't my fault firmly established cut off. At some point we could have more unemployed people than the times total US population.

Don't forget unemployment figures are just numbers of first time filers, they don't track the folks whose benefits have run out, and all who are in the system. If they do they don't publish them. Of course it is only this weeks and a four week continuation that reflect the true state of the big picture you need to be exposed to. "

Mitt Romney, to whom many Republican Senators and Republican House members look for leadership, has the ideas. Rush Limbaugh has the mouth and 20 million listeners a week. Mitt Romney owns Clear Channel Communications, and Rush Limbaugh's $400 million eight-year contract is with Clear Channel Communications. Rush's new contract of $50 million/year is a $14.4 million/year raise over his previous contract. Given the Clear Channel connection, would would Mitt Romney be able to convince Rush Limbaugh to spew to his 20 million listeners per week propaganda that would send them to their Congressmen demanding that they pass Romney-designed legislation? Probably, but that would paralyze Congress and ensure that the Obama administration would fail. Limbaugh could make Romney look like a savior in 2012.

Here is what The League of Nations Intelligence Agency, Geneva, Switzerland had to say in a top secret report about the Downfall of the Weimer Republic:

"The political parties of the Weimar Republic were divided on everything and not willing to compromise on anything. The only party that was united was the Social Democratic Party but their power was limited. Political propaganda was the main reason for the downfall of the Republic. The persuadable middle and lower classes of Germany began to vote for right-wing extremists parties as they blamed the Social Democrats for the adaptation of Treaty of Versailles.

"The government of Germany became anything but effective as the parties began to split into dozens of smaller parties. The most prominent of these smaller parties was the National Socialist German Worker's Party or the Nazis.

"The time was considered an age where people's anger was growing to a boil and any leader that could tap into this growing discontent could make use of it. That leader was Adolf Hitler."

If the Republican Party wants President Obama to fail, "someone" is waiting in the wings. I suspect that that someone is Mitt Romney, since he is the person closest to the one propaganda machine who can set the American people up to beg for a political savior. "

You might be onto something there, cddmills.

Considering that it will probably be impossible to turn things around from the Bush fiasco's in one term, the Republicans might see this as a winning strategy.

Is it possible that McCain was really a sacrificial goat? Perhaps they knew that is was impossible for one person to turn this mess around so they willingly put Palin in to assure defeat? This way someone like a Romney could come riding in on his white horse and save the day?

By purchasing Clear Channel Communications, Romney automatically got Limbaugh's support. I have always suspected Limbaugh would sell his own mother for a buck or two. Just look at the way he hawks his cheap carnival quality tee shirts, coffee mugs, ties and the like off onto his loyal fans at rediculous prices now.

While I'm not a big Romney fan, I have to say that I find it absolutely hilarious that McCain chose the walking imbecile Palin over Romney.

Regardless of what happens, Palin will not be the Republican candidate next go around. She may do a good job of stirring up the bottom feeders of her party like ed miller and our local corn pone, Blowdog, but the power brokers of the GOP are not stupid enough to take a chance on running her for the top spot. BUT THIS IS NOT ABOUT OBAMA BUT ABOUT HIS POLICIES. I personally have watched his voting record while in the Il. Senate and in the US Senate and his record was not outstanding and so liberal.... I realize that there are liberals and ultra-liberals. He is the latter. He thinks he knows best and belittles those who do not agree. This bill is one put togather by Pelosi and Reid a couple of people I would not entrust to take care of my dog let alone my checkbook and make no mistake this stimulus plan is about taking care of our pocketbooks for generations..
dipping into it at their will. I learned a long time ago to pay my bills, and not to borrow more than "I" could pay back. So I own my house and I own my car...paid off in full. The biggest lesson we have to learn-- both parties--DON'T BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW. In this case more then we the tax payers can chew. Don't believe like chicken little...The sky is falling, the sky is falling! That's fear tactics. Roosevelt said "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." If these first two and a half weeks are any indication at all (not to mention his actions since the election, remember Blogo-gate?); Obama will be the most corrupt and incompetent of any Administration, ever.

What exactly are you pinning your belief on, nj85?

Obama's well established track record of clarifications, lies, backtracks, misdirection, and slight of hand policies?

Or maybe his winning smile? "

" Okay, here's the deal. Since nobody else wants to address the "I hope he fails" comment in context, allow me to enlighten you. I saw the interview with Rush Limbaugh done by Sean Hannity in which this comment was made. Rush, while I agree he is usually over the top and probably does more to hurt conservative ideals than promote them, was making the point that President Obama's policies appear to be a push towards the kind of socialism that is practiced by many countries in Europe. He was stating that if this is the kind of agenda that the Obama administration is going to try to push, then he hopes he fails. He did not say, nor imply, that he wants the country to fail. His point was actually that he feels these policies, if successfully passed, will in fact cause the country to fail. Like him or not, the man is entitled to his beliefs about what is smart policy and what is not-so-smart policy. If you want to argue anything, please argue that he is wrong about these policies being the wrong move, but don't simply take a quote out of context and run wild with it. That proves nothing. "

Hogwash.

Label Obama a socialist, then hope he fails it is socialist. Obama is no more or no less socialist than any president since Carter.

Here's a hint to Rush and his ditto-heads -- America didn't buy the socialist mudslinging in November 2008, and I doubt they're ready to buy it now.

But let's not take Rush out of context! And by the same token, let's let Rush define the context by equating Obama to a socialist.

Fact is, Rush said it. "

Personnally I would have definitely let the first company failed. Then I would have informed all other companies, corporation, etc. that their lot is the same if they don't get their houses in order. Then let a couple more fail if necessary.
Their should have been a iron clad stipulation that the CEO and Boards be fired BEFORE receiving any kind of aid. If these people were in charge when the business got into this shape, then they aren't qualified to get them back in shape. "

Off-Shore Banking & HQ
A U.S. Bank or Business should be 100% US regardless of its physical location. No more moving the Main Office off-shore. If you are USA, you pay ALL taxes and fees, you are under the same rules that apply when within the USA borders. NO more Free Rides.

USA-Out of country manufacturing:
You must meet all criteria as if physically being located within USA borders. You must pay USA taxes and fees on all employees regardless of location.
Their should be a penalty for removing manufacturing (jobs) out of country.

CEOs:
*{Today, over 60% of foreign CEOs had 15 or more years of tenure before being appointed as the CEO of their company. The Average Japanese CEO joined the company at the age of 29, spent 27 years in the company, and was promoted to CEO at the age of 56 (Kato 2005). As far as education credentials go, 95% of Japanese CEOs hold college degrees, close to 30% of those being earned at the University of Tokyo.}
*{In response to the proposed question of how much CEOs should be paid, no matter how much they feel that might be, they do not deserve to make 301 times more than their employees. If the average American employee makes $27,000 a year, CEOs do not deserve to make $8 million a year. Who is to say that a CEO is 301 times more deserving than their employees that actually do the work?}

Hong Kong 41:1
Mexico 47:1
Venezuela 50:1
