Harper has 27 in win

CHARLESTON -- Stephanie Harper interrupted Monday's free-throw exhibition long enough to get 10 field goals among her 27-point, 14-rebound game leading Charleston's 70-50 Apollo Conference girls' basketball win over Robinson.

Beating Robinson for the third time this season, the Lady Trojans raised their record to 18-2 overall and 8-1 in the Apollo despite a 30-point game by the Lady Maroons freshman sensation Morayo Akande.

But the senior and freshman stars were not even the focal point of this 46-foul marathon In addition to those youth free-throw shooting contests local Knights of Columbus are conducting these days, officials staged one Monday at Baker Gym when Charleston and Robinson planned to play a girls' basketball game.

While falling to 9-12 and 0-9, Robinson made 16 of 26 free throws while Charleston finished 13-for-19 from the line.

Robinson shot 10 free throws before Charleston shot its first when Harper completed a three-point play with 6:59 left in the first half.

That began the Lady Trojans' foul shooting comeback in which both teams went 7-for-10 from the foul line in the second period of a first half in which Charleston was whistled for 13 fouls and Robinson 12.

Those fouls do not count the technical called against Robinson coach Kelly Brookman after Charleston coach Jeff Miller was warned for voicing his opinion.

Brookman was tagged with her technical on the Charleston possession after Akande was was called for charging for her third foul 1:53 before halftime.

Holly Wohltman, who began the game guarding Akande, had been called for her third foul with 4:56 left in the first half.

Even after Akande went to the bench with her third foul after 16 first-half points, Robinson was able to cut what had been a nine-point deficit to 32-28 on Brook Murray's rebound basket to end the marathon first half.

But with Harper scoring a layup of a Robinson turnover, April Lunt hitting a 3-pointer and Harper driving for a basket, Charleston's 7-0 start had the Lady Trojans on the way to a 52-38 lead by the end of the third quarter.

When Charleston forced Robinson out of its zone defense, the Lady Trojans were in control.

The Lady Trojans got 10 points from Brittany O'Dell before she fouled out with 7:45 remaining.

Robinson was playing without its second freshman starter with a double-figure scoring average, Kelsey Dirks who had a sprained anke.

Charleston is to play Thursday night at Paris.
