Fast start powers Lady Wave to .500
By BRIAN NIELSEN, Sports Editor bnielsen@jg-tc.com
MATTOON -- On its way to the .500 mark for the first time this girls’ basketball season, Mattoon ran into a new problem.
Coach Jason Morgan hadn’t been able to use many what-to-do-when-we’re-ahead-by-21-points-after-one-quarter speeches.
“We didn’t really respond to it,” Morgan said. “After the first quarter the girls weren’t as aggressive. You can say ignore the score and play but it’s hard to do.”
The good thing was the Lady Green Wave had built more than enough margin for error on the way to Thursday’s 63-44 Big 12 Conference win over Decatur Eisenhower.
Kenzie Floyd had 17 points and eight rebounds for Mattoon, which after losing four of its first five games this season now has evened its record to 9-9 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12.
Eisenhower, whose Kriza Allen had 16 points and nine rebounds, fell to 1-11 and 0-5 but by cutting into a 25-point halftime deficit found some positives.
“For whatever reason we weren’t ready to play the first quarter,” Lady Panthers coach Chris Seider said. “I told them after the game I’m proud of them. I got on them pretty good after the first half but we showed some heart in the second half.”
Allen’s 3-pointer gave Eisenhower a 3-2 lead before Mattoon went on a 24-2 run to lead 26-5 after the first quarter.
“I would say this is the first time we’ve jumped on a team like that,” Morgan said.
The Lady Green Wave hit seven of their first eight shots on the way to a 9-for-14 first quarter before cooling off to 4-for-15 in the second period that still ended with Mattoon ahead 37-12.
Next for Mattoon is Thursday’s Big 12 game at Champaign
Central.
“Now we’re going to try to get over .500,” Morgan said.
