EIU, SIU to play baseball at Mattoon

CHARLESTON -- For the second straight year Eastern Illinois is to play a baseball game at Mattoon’s Grimes Field in Peterson Park.

The Panthers are to play host to Southern Illinois in the 6:30 p.m. April 29 game.

Former Mattoon pitcher Ryan Bradley transferred from Kaskaskia College to Southern Illinois this school year. Former Eastern coach Dan Callahan coaches the Salukis.

Eastern has Charleston’s Matt Miller and Josh Wilson, a Lake Land transfer.

Last year Eastern defeated Illinois 13-3 in front of more than 1,700 fans at Grimes.

Three Mattoon High School products – EIU’s Ross Jeske and UI’s Kyle Hudson and Ryan Hastings – played in the contest. Selected players from both teams signed autographs prior to the game.

While all three Mattoon products have moved on - Hudson getting drafted by and signing with the Baltimore Orioles and Jeske and Hastings finishing up their college careers - this year’s game should be another big-time event. Eastern and Southern are annual contenders in the Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conferences, respectively.

The Panthers are also coming off a 2008 OVC Tournament title and berth in the NCAA Lincoln Regional.

The EIU-SIU game is expected to again feature free admission and pregame autographs with Kurt Stretch, Mattoon’s parks and lakes superintendent, again a major contributor to putting on this event.

The Panthers and Salukis are also scheduled to play March 4 in Carbondale.

Eastern opens its 2009 campaign in Hammond, La. for the second year in a row with a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana, Feb. 20-22.
