El Rancherito faces 3-day liquor license suspension after violation

CHARLESTON — The El Rancherito restaurant has been fined $500 and scheduled for a three-day liquor license suspension for selling alcohol to a minor.

The city’s liquor commissioner, Mayor John Inyart, levied the fine and penalty against El Rancherito on Monday during a hearing at City Hall.

Inyart said this was El Rancherito’s first offense during the nearly four years he has been mayor. He said the liquor license suspension will take place Jan. 26-28. The restaurant will still be able to sell food and nonalcoholic drinks during the suspension.

The charge against El Rancherito, 819 Lincoln Ave., stemmed from the Charleston Police Department conducting a liquor ordinance compliance check on June 27 in which a minor tried to purchase alcohol at various businesses.

Exactly my sentiments, HP. I'm certainly not hard nosed when it comes to enforcement of local liquor laws, but this is ridiculous. If the liquor commissoners (the mayors) insisted on meaningful consequences for violations, we'd be down to almost zero violations in short order. For example, first offense: an immediate 30 day suspension. Second offense: an immediate 90-day suspension. Third offense: permanent revocation. Period. "
