Ten area games set on first Tuesday of new year



The first Tuesday of the 2009 portion of the boys’ basketball schedule has 10 area games set, including three Little Okaw Valley Conference openers and four non-conference games.

Tri-County is to travel to Lovington for a Little Okaw Valley Conference opener and Arcola travels to Bement and Okaw Valley is to travel to Niantic to play Sangamon Valley.

In the Little Illini Conference, Cumberland is to play host to Flora, while in the National Trail Conference, Windsor is to play host to Teutopolis.

The top non-conference game has Stewardson-Strasburg playing host to Newton, while Casey-Westfield is at Robinson; Neoga visits Central A&M and Shelbyville travels to Hillsboro.

All games are to start at 6:15 p.m. with the junior varsity followed by the varsity with the exception of the Okaw Valley game which is to be a tripleheader with the junior varsity to play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity girls and then the varsity boys.

Newton (8-4) at Stewardson-Strasburg (9-3)

Stew-Stras, coached by Mike Walker, is coming off its best finish in the 37th annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament, falling in the title game to South Central 61-53.

Jaden Widdersheim and Josh Tabbert, members of the all-tournament team are two of the top three scorers along with Will Rincker. Widdersheim averages 19.3 points, while Tabbert scores 16.9 and Rincker 12.1.

Newton finished second in the Dieterich Holiday Tournament behind MVP Scott Mammoser, a 6-0 guard, who averages 24.9 points per game. The Eagles lost to the host school 55-53. The only other losses were a 68-66 game to Cumberland and a 69-50 loss to Mount Zion.

Tri-County (8-5, 0-0) at Lovington (7-2, 0-0)

The two teams played earlier in the year and Lovington won 70-68 in overtime on Nov. 28 in the Tri-County Thanksgiving Tournament. In that game the Panthers led 20-10 after the opening quarter and were led by Toby Bolsen with 28 points. Mike Arnold, a 6-6 senior scored 14 points and Jared Brewer, a junior guard, had 15 points.

Patrick Miller had 21 for the Titans, while Jake Montgomery had 16 and Curtis Washburn scored a season-high 14 points.

Tri-County averages 65.2 points per game and allows 59.7 and is led by Cody Meyer, Miller and Montgomery with averages of 17, 16.3 and 11.5 points per game respectively.

Lovington, a team that did not play in a holiday tournament, has not played since Dec. 20, a 70-26 win over Judah Christian. The Panthers are led by Bolsen.

Arcola (4-7, 0-0) at Bement (4-6, 0-0)

Arcola hopes to extend its winning streak to three games as the Purple Riders won the consolation championship over North Clay 48-40.

Kenneth East, a member of the all-tournament team, leads Arcola with an average of 13.9 points per game. The Purple Riders average 52 points per game and allow 52.4.

Bement is coming off a 52-46 win over Ramsey, which snapped a three-game losing streak. The win occurred in the Decatur St. Teresa Christmas Tournament. The Bulldogs average 50 points per game and allow 46.3.

Arthur (8-2, 1-0) at Shiloh (2-10, 0-0)

Arthur has won five straight games, including all four in the Tri-County Holiday Tournament that included a thrilling 62-60 overtime win over Tri-County to win the title.

Tim Wilson was the MVP of the tourney for the Knights, coached by Dale Schuring. Wilson averages 18.3 points per game. Bobby Aikman scores 11 per game and was on the all-tournament team along with Justin Schuring (7.6 points per contest).

The Knights hope to remain atop the conference with a win against the Raiders, a team that has lost nine straight and has never scored more than 54 points in one game (54-37 win over Buckley Christ Lutheran). The other win was 40-35 over Bement.

Arthur averages 60.9 points per game and allows 48.6 per game, while Shiloh averages just 37.4 points per game, but has allowed only 50.8 per contest.

Flora (5-11, 1-2) at Cumberland (8-4, 1-1)

Cumberland hopes to snap a three-game losing streak with this game that was originally scheduled for Dec. 16.

The Pirates lost both of their games in the Charleston Holiday Tournament (Sewickley, Pa. and Metamora) and are led in scoring by Jeremy Jansen, Dalton Sowers and Silas Gabel with averages of 15.8, 15.2 and 13.1 points per game for the team coached by Justin Roedl.

Flora went 2-3 in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, placing sixth. The Wolves’ Paul Knapp made the all-tournament team and led the team in scoring with an average of 19.8 points per game.

Okaw Valley (3-6, 0-0) at Sangamon Valley (2-8, 0-0)

Okaw Valley hopes to continue its winning streak. The Timberwolves have won two straight, beating Bement 50-25 and Christman 46-45 in the Decatur St. Teresa Christmas Tournament.

Dallas Kirkwood, a member of the all-tournament team, leads the team with an average of 11 points per game and Kyle Pierce scores 10.2 points per game.

Sangamon Valley has dropped four straight and is led by 6-1 senior Ben Williams.

Teutopolis (8-2, 2-0) at Windsor (3-8, 1-2)

Teutopolis is coming off a 46-40 win over Olney to earn the title in the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic at Pinckneyville. The Wooden Shoes also defeated Carterville 66-18, Pinckneyville 55-51 and Lawrenceville 77-43 in the two-day tournament. Tony Zerrusen and Brian Haskenherm made the all-tournament team and averaged 12.8 and 11 points per game respectively.

Windsor is hoping to snap a three-game losing streak. Kyle Floyd and Jake McIlwain lead the Blue Devils with averages of 11.7 and 11.6 points per contest.

Casey-Westfield (3-4) at Robinson (10-3)

Casey-Westfield took on Sullivan Monday in a rescheduled game from Dec. 2 and Robinson is coming off a 45-43 win over Salem after finishing second in the Charleston Holiday Tournament.

The Maroons are led by Ben Jones and Meyers Leonard, who were on the all-tournament team.

Casey is led by Mitch Snyder, who leads the area in scoring with an average of 23 points per game (prior to the game against Sullivan).

Neoga (4-7) at Central A&M (2-9)

Central A&M has lost seven straight games. The Raiders’ only wins were against Pana (71-66) and Argenta-Oreana (57-50).

Neoga sapped a four-game losing streak with a 56-50 win over Sangamon Valley in the Monticello Holiday Hoopla Tournament.

Austin Robinson made the all-tournament team and leads the team, coached by Jason Hanson, with an average of 13.7 points per game. Cody Boardman scores 12.5 per game and Dalton Robinson averages 11.8 per contest.

Shelbyville (4-6) at Hillsboro

The Rams are coming off a 53-42 win over Central A&M, a fellow Okaw Valley Conference opponent in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, which snapped six-game losing streak.

Caine Cloe and Nick Nugent lead Shelbyville in scoring with averages of 12.2 and 12.1 points per game.
