Top Clark County 4-H’ers receive achievement honors



CASEY — More than 300 4-H members, parents, leaders and friends of 4-H recently gathered to honor the accomplishments of 4-H’ers during the past year. The annual 4-H Achievement Night was held at the Casey First Christian Church.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Clark County Outstanding 4-H’er Award, which was presented in memory of past Clark County Extension Ag Adviser Robert Wetherell. The award was presented to John Michael Knowles, an 11-year member of the Triple T 4-H club and the son of John and Ruthann Knowles of Marshall.

Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the “Youth to Washington” trip. One Clark County 4-H’er is selected to attend the trip sponsored by Enerstar. Enerstar Board Member Dan Gard presented this year’s award to Billy Rhoads, son of Bill and Lori Rhoads of Marshall.

The “I Dare You” Award, another top honor of the evening, was presented to four 4-H’ers who shows potential leadership ability and character. The award was presented to Steward Gilbert, son of Rick and Brenda Gilbert of Martinsville; Jessica Lewis, daughter of Jeff and Carrie Lewis of Marshall; Phillip Vice, son of Phil and Naomi Vice of Dennison; and Jordan Warfel, son of Charles and Kathy Warfel of Casey.

Another highlight was the presentation of the Key Club Award. This award recognizes members who have shown outstanding leadership qualities, project work and have participated in many club and county activities. New Key Club winners were Beth Arbogast, daughter of Ruth Mills of Casey; Kaleb Brandenburg, son of Mike and Pam Brandenburg of Casey; Trey Brashear, son of Todd and Teri Brashear of Marshall; Brionna Budd, daughter of Larry and Rhonda Budd of Marshall; J.W. Cloud, son of Steve and Cathy Cloud of Martinsville; Jessica Kahl, daughter of Kurt and Nancy Kahl of Marshall; Audrey Pittenger, daughter of Mark and Tammy Pittenger; Chance Rector, son of Gary and Sally Rector; Joy Wernz, daughter of John and Linda Wernz of West Union; and Patrick White, son of Linda and Chris White of Casey.

Each year, a member is named as being the outstanding member in each of the seven project areas. Each award winner received a bookstore gift card to select a book in the area of their award.

Winners were: achievement, Andy Guinnip; animal science, Jessica Lewis; environmental and natural resources, Chance Rector; home and family resources, Emily Crews; food nutrition and health, Teresa Gorrell; leadership, Landen Crews; mechanical sciences, Brandi Rhoads; personal development, Emily Crews; plants and soils, John Michael Knowles.

Members recognized for 10 years of 4-H membership were Meghan Applegate, Kacey Brandenburg, Austin Cox, Nathan Crews, Tyler Howard, Jacob Jones, Jessica Lewis, Audrey Pittenger, Kyle Swalls, Wesley Switzer, Lindsay Vanatta, Jordan Warfel and Cortney Williams.

Also recognized were 11-year members Allie Bender, Bryan Bennett, Ty Boyd, Tyler Brashear, Andy Guinnip, Chelsea Hollingsworth, Justin Janney, Heather Jones, John Michael Knowles, Lindsay Montgomery and Ryan Staley.

Members recognized for 12 years of membership were Steward Gilbert and Ashley McCormack.

Special recognition was given to 4-H Volunteer Greg Strohm for being named to the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame and to Nathan Crews for being the recipient of the Illinois 4-H Foundation Legacy of Leadership Scholarship.

Several county awards were given to 4-H’ers for special achievements. The secretary’s award was presented to Joy Wernz of Hustlers’ 4-H Club and the treasurer’s award was presented to Jessica Lewis of Triple T. The Triple T 4-H Club was recognized with the scrapbook award.

The outstanding livestock record award was presented to Heidi Murphy and Ryan Warfel. The Illinois Farm Electric Council Award was presented to Billy Rhoads.

County medals were presented to members who have shown outstanding work in a project or activity. Members can be the recipients of a project medal only one time in their 4-H career.

County medal winners were: achievement, Jessica Lewis, Justin Lewis and Brandi Rhoads; animal sciences, Saidee Brandenburg, Brandi Rhoads, Mickenzie Thompson; environmental and natural resources, Michelle Gorrell and Brandi Rhoads; home and family, Emily Crews and Makayla Wycoff; food nutrition and health, Emily Crews and Teresa Gorrell; leadership, Landen Crews; mechanics and technology, William Black and Brandi Rhoads; personal development, Emily Crews and Justin Janney; plants and soils, Ruthann Gorrell.

Blue awards are presented to members who have previously won a county medal and have continued to do outstanding work in the project area.

They were awarded to: achievement, Allie Bender, Megan Combs, Landen Crews, Nathan Crews, Andy Guinnip, John Michael Knowles, Chance Rector and Billy Rhoads; animal science, Beth Arbogast, Ty Boyd, Kaleb Brandenburg, Landen Crews, Nathan Crews, Tyler Howard, Justin Janney, John Michael Knowles, Jessica Lewis, Justin Lewis, Chance Rector, Billy Rhoads, Sarah Simpson, and Jessica Zellers; environment and natural resources, Austin Cox, Teresa Gorrell, John Michael Knowles and Chance Rector; food nutrition and health, Megan Combs, Diane Gorrell and Brandi Rhoads; home and family, Teresa Gorrell; leadership, Nathan Crews and Andy Guinnip; mechanics and technology, Landen Crews, Diane Gorrell, Ruthann Gorrell, Teresa Gorrell, Tyler Howard, Justin Janney, Billy Rhoads and Patrick White; personal development, Allie Bender, Brionna Budd, Landen Crews, Nathan Crews, Ruthann Gorrell, John Michael Knowles and Billy Rhoads; and plants and soils, Teresa Gorrell and John Michael Knowles.

Several 4-H’ers were recognized for representing Clark County in regional and state events. DJ Sanders and Lindsay Vanatta were recognized for their participation in the Wabash Valley Showmanship Contest.

Participants in the livestock judging program were J.W. Cloud, Brittney Davison, Christina Hamilton, Leanna Keeney, John Michael Knowles, Justin Lewis, Marie Lotz, Chance Rector, Lindsay Vanatta, Phillip Vice and Ryan Warfel.

Members recognized for participating in the Regional Horse Bowl and Hippology Contest, State Horse Judging Contest or Horse Drill Team were Beth Arbogast, J.W. Cloud, Rose Cloud, Keith Denham, Taylor Dashiell, Haley Elliott, Callie Ewing, Laura Hardway, Dana Gilbert, Hannah Jones, Billi Jo Maynard, Ashley McCormack, Josh McCormack, Heidi Murphy, Sarah Simpson, Shelby Thompson and Jessica Zellers.

Recognized as the top salesperson for the 4-H BBQ was Brittney Davison, who was presented with $100 cash for selling a total of 170 tickets.

Other members selling more than 100 tickets and receiving a cash award were Emily Crews and Jessica Zellers.

Club awards were presented to clubs who received the Standard of Excellence Award. They were Casey Achievers, Clarksville Co-eds, Hustlers, Moriah Go-Getters, Pikes Peak and Triple T. Receiving other county awards were Casey Achievers: Agricultural, Natural Resources, Personal Development, and Community Involvement.

Casey Achievers Club was recognized as being a 2008 State Award Winner in three project areas.

Also recognized were members who had reached the “Standard of Excellence,” junior leaders, volunteer leaders, and youth council members.

The program concluded with the introduction of the 2008-2009 Federation Officers and a video presentation of photos during the past year.
