COLUMN: Disgust with Rod could unite entire Prairie State

The best thing about high-profile political scandals is the gems of wisdom offered by people on the street or along a mall walkway.

One gem hit me in the forehead when Bill Edwards, a white-haired, polite gentleman from Mattoon, verbally turned our governor into road kill on the political highway.

Bill wasn’t running around like Chicken Little as some politicians in Downstate Illinois did on Tuesday — one admitted to being nauseated by the charges while another was making patriotic speeches. I’m surprised one of them didn’t shout out, “I’m shocked, shocked, you allow corruption here!”

None of that hand wringing for Bill. He was thinking ahead to the next time we elect a governor in 2010, excluding any special election brought on by any General Assembly actions driven by bipartisan disgust.

Bill told me Tuesday that Pat Quinn as substitute guv might work, but he was willing to pitch him into political oblivion if he doesn’t work out. If more of our so-called leaders in Springfield had shown that much gumption a long ago we might not be in the mess we are today.

That is the best attitude to take as our state has become a national laughingstock. Tuesday was the second time in four years I did a local reaction story to an Illinois governor facing prison so I was certainly a proud Prairie Stater after getting the news.

But personally, I think we as Illinois voters deserve some of the laughs from the rest of the country.

Now before you start looking for a thick rope and a sturdy branch please hear me out. During the past 10 years we have elected two guys and one of the former governors is now in prison wailing for early release, while the other is on tape sounding like a 21st century cross of Richard III and Lucky Luciano.

So how do we pull our political trousers up from our ankles?

First of all we need to keep focused during the next gubernatorial election on the real issues like school funding reform, infrastructure projects, the health care system, public pensions and some others that produce headaches for political munchkins on the campaign trail.

Unfortunately, many Illinois voters tend to get distracted on other issues like guns.

Before I get dizzy watching all those red laser dots circling around my chest, I would like to point out that I have owned guns. I realize one of the more effective home defense systems involves a shotgun loaded with buckshot and deer slug shells. I believe there is an argument for arming myself with a pair of replica Colt Navies and popping off volleys over the heads of any stubborn intruders. Any throwback fireworks will send those pilgrims packing. And I could quote John Wayne movie lines while shooting, too.

No, no, no, I’ve got to stop shooting my mouth off on guns! Guns are an issue, but not the only issue for this state. We need to keep the eyes on the priority issues I mentioned above.

And Downstate has to make a political comeback. And it doesn’t have to produce a civil war, either.

But we do have to offer quick jabs when the upstaters classify us as bare-footed hicks dressed in tattered overalls riding sway-backed mules to work or school.

We would then ask them that if this part of the state is so primitive then why do so many of them send their offspring to college here? And if we really want to get mean-spirited we might ask the upstaters why their grandparents hated using vowels in their names.

No, all of Illinois has to get it right the next time on the governor race and one way to accomplish that is for the regional sniping to end.

One thing that might bring all the voters together is the disgust factor. And that could unite the North and South of this state like never before. Like Popeye the Sailor Man, there comes a time when we “stands all we can stands and we can’t stands no more.”

And if there are still some Rod lovers around I would like to put them in a room with people like Bill Edwards.

Trust me. It wouldn’t be pretty. But it could make a heckuva party tape that could crack a smile on the face of Patrick Fitzgerald.

If they'd say a place around Chicagoland I'd get disgusted and tell them "Thought you said you were from Illinois"..

It disgusts me to think that only NOW when the Feds got Blago on tape that there is "evidence of an impeachable act".. I think it's more the fact that this is one that cannot be ignored.

I've been saying for months that we the people of Illinois could not wait for 2010 to get rid of him...if what's left of the state government in Springfield drags even one toe in the impeachment process, it will finish this state. We have become a laughingstock now, and the ONLY way to start to change that is to take immediate action. By this time next week we'd best have a different governor. THAT would show the rest of the country that we aren't as the rset of the country is portraying us as. "

For partisans, theres the schadenfreude that comes with watching the Democrats - self-proclaimed anti-corruption zealots in recent years explain why Blagojevich shouldnt be lumped in with Congressmen Charlie Rangel (cut himself sweetheart deals), William Jefferson ($90,000 in his freezer) and Tim Mahoney (tried to bribe an aide he was sleeping with not to sue him and you thought romance was dead) as part of a new Democratic culture of corruption storyline.

" Post for this yesterday failed to pass the mustard with the censorship, so here is another version.

Rods latest legal issues have been world news, for most of the last week. His issues in the prarie state, are far from new, and folks have been united against the complete gridlock in springfield for a couple years now. Now springfield has a patsy to shift all blame for not doing their job for years, when he leaves office so should their excusses, one might think.

For anyone to think the climate in the highest office in the state, got to the point of this weeks criminal complaint, and the only two folks with pertinent knowledge were Rod and a lackie, ostrich and emu farming may face serious backlash in this state.

This is an opinion, so I will cut the writer some slack, see censored post.

Uniting to mob action, for a fool like Rod, would yield exactly what benefit. Evidently we need to have all our corruption in this state rooted out by the feds. From investment schemes locally, to various other levels of corruption by people in positions of public trust, it seems only the feds can or will take any responsibility for uncovering, and prosecuting various forms of fraud, bribery, and extortion.

Something about that dynamic of legal responsibility, needs to change. The corruption in the governors office, is unique, who could investigate, prosecute, and keep it covert and maintain integrity of evidence and what not, from within our own state. Forming a corruption enforcement task force from within this state, would compare to hiring a junkie as night watchman at a pharmacy.

Corruption and various violations of public trust, have little consequences. Ryan got 6 years and is hoping 1 is plenty. From business fraud, to public official misconduct, there needs to be truth in sentencing, and many of them need to bring 20 to life, for the far reaching impacts they cause. If Illinois ever hopes to shed the most corrupt status they have now become world renowned for again, they have to put some constitutionally viable severity to the punnishments for these crimes. Seizing assets, long hard time, and in severe cases they never see the light of day as free individuals again.

A state, where someone can face 8 years in prison, for murder with a gun, has legal enforcement issues across the spectrum. We have devolved to parities in consequences, that place Ryans conviction and murder within two years of eachother in sentencing. If murder were still held at 20 to life, that would not be so out of line. Now less serious crimes bring harsher sentencing, and criminals usually are quite cognisant of reality, when it comes to consequences. At some point it became better to face the system for murder or public office and business corruption, than it does for many other crimes.

Consequences are the sole restraint of criminal behavior. From prosecutions, to sentences, how they are carried out and implimented are the sole reason for crime and corruption, gaining the boldness and blatant disregard for increasingly unheard of actions taking place and becoming prevalent.

We have an empty prison, and don't forget grayville, the winner of the proposed facility a few years back. This state has devolved back to its cheaper to keep a revolving door system, than to actually take crime and punnishment seriously. I do not wish to have us become a three strikes state, but serious crime, needs to be taken seriously, and some individuals, need to be kept out of the population indeffinately for the crimes they commit against it. We can't let law enforcement and justice be subject to budget squabbles, and wrangling, any more than we can afford to let education drift in these same tide pools of ebb and flow enthusiasm toward maintaining them. Justice and education, are the keys to reversing the trends of crime and corruption. Continuing to intermittently provide portions of solutions, to these problems, is exactly why we are in the state that is in the state it is in. "

The recent web advertisement, "Questions Remain," is a destructive distraction. Clearly, we should insist that all taped communications regarding the Senate seat should be made public. However, that should be a matter of public policy, not an excuse for political attack.

In a time when America is facing real challenges, Republicans should be working to help the incoming President succeed in meeting them, regardless of his Party.

From now until the inaugural, Republicans should be offering to help the President-elect prepare to take office.

Furthermore, once President Obama takes office, Republicans should be eager to work with him when he is right, and, when he is wrong, offer a better solution, instead of just opposing him.

This is the only way the Republican Party will become known as the "better solutions" party, not just an opposition party. And this is the only way Republicans will ever regain the trust of the voters to return to the majority.

This ad is a terrible signal to be sending about both the goals of the Republican Party in the midst of the nation's troubled economic times and about whether we have actually learned anything from the defeats of 2006 and 2008.

George Bush took out Saddam Hussein sure he made a lot of mistakes and is blamed for the deaths of innocent Iraqis but how about we take a look at how many people Saddam would have killed in fact lets just look at how many he killed before even the 1st Gulf War.
(1980-88), 730,000 Iranians died. You will recall that Hussein was the aggressor in this war.
1,000 Kuwaiti nationals were killed in the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
100,000 Iranians killed by Husseins chemical weapons associated with the invasion of Kuwait.
In one day, 5,000 men, women, and children were gassed.
180,000 Kurds disappeared
In 1983, Hussein killed of 8,000 members of the Barzani clan.
Between 1988 and 1999, Hussein killed 7,000 prisoners in what was called prison cleansing.
Hussein put to death officers who did not agree to execute people in the street.

Excerpts from- http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=392881

This is an incomplete list and remember this is just those he killed before the Gulf War.
Look at the above web site for more details.

I leave you to draw your own conclusions. Would fewer people have been killed if the U.S. had not participated in the Gulf War? Or would Hussein have continued to kill, even without U.S. intervention?

Do you really think he would have stopped killing?

George Bush has had to take the heat continuously for everything he has accomplished. As I already acknowledged and as the President does himself there were mistakes.

We owe President Bush a debt of gratitude for his work and his steadfast determination in the face of constant criticism. "

" Gaffney: 4,000 Americans Had To Die In Iraq

In a new interview with ABC News, Vice President Cheney claimed that the the case for war had nothing to do with whether Saddam Hussein had WMD; America would have invaded anyway. Today on MSNBCs Hardball, right-wing commentator Frank Gaffney defended Cheneys remarks, saying that the real reason the Bush administration wanted to invade Iraq was because Saddam was a mortal threat to the United States.

Host Chris Matthews was appalled that Gaffney seemed to feel no guilt or remorse than 4,000 Americans died because of the right wings mistakes. Gaffney replied that while it was regrettable anyone had to die, they did have to die:

MATTHEWS: You guys sold the war as a nuclear threat to the United States. A nuclear weapon was going to be delivered by a nuclear delivery device. It was going to take the weapon and drop it here. You sold every trick you could to get us into this war. Now youre back pedaling. And I do find it astounding. The Vice President of the United States is

GAFFNEY: How do you feel, Chris?

MATTHEWS: This is how I feel. Four thousand people are dead because of how you feel. And Frank, youre wrong about this because you dont even seem to care your facts were wrong.

GAFFNEY: Chris, there were

MATTHEWS: You admit your facts were wrong and it doesnt bother you.

GAFFNEY: May I state my position rather than you stating it? May I do that? My position is that its regrettable that any Americans died. It is regrettable that they had to die, but I believe they did have to die. "

400,000 Documents Show It Is A Myth That Fannie And Freddie Caused The Housing Crisis

fanfred.jpgToday, four former CEOs of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac testified before the House Oversight Committee, in a hearing meant to examine the extent to which the actions and policies of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac may have contributed to the ongoing crisis.

A favorite pastime of conservatives is to blame the housing crisis on Fannie and Freddie. However, as Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) announced at the beginning of the hearing, the 400,000 Fannie and Freddie documents amassed by the Oversight Committee show that it is a myth to say [Fannie and Freddie] were the originators of the subprime crisis:

At an earlier hearing, the minority released a report that called Fannie and Freddie the central cancer of the mortgage market, which has now metastasized into the current financial crisis. The next day, John McCain made a similar statement during a presidential debate in Nashville, stating that Fannie and Freddie were the catalysts, the match that started this forest fire. The documents do not support these assertions.

Fannie and Freddie were undeniably irresponsible in that they purchased risky loans and mortgage securities. As the Washington Post reported today, both Fannie and Freddie were warned that they were investing in risky mortgages that could pose dangers to the firm. Fannie and Freddies chief regulator the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) failed to prevent them from investing in toxic mortgages, despite its clear mandate to ensure the safety and soundness of the two institutions.

However, to point to Fannie and Freddie as the catalyst of the crisis is absurd. As Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman noted, Fannie and Freddie didnt do any subprime lending, because they cant:

[T]he definition of a subprime loan is precisely a loan that doesnt meet the requirement, imposed by law, that Fannie and Freddie buy only mortgages issued to borrowers who made substantial down payments and carefully documented their income.

As the Center for American Progress Action Funds Tim Westrich laid out the real culprits in the mortgage mess are non-bank mortgage companiesthat originated the lions share of bad mortgages at the heart of the crisis:

They made an estimated 50 percent of subprime loans in 2005. Another 30 percent of loans were made by non-bank subsidiaries of banks or thrifts.

Fannie and Freddie should not have bet the farm on risky loans in the midst of a growing housing bubble. However, that, by itself, is not an adequate explanation for the housing crisis. "

Properly responding to ENRON, would have gone a long way to heading of countless corruptions and scandals. Now 7 years later, Madoff walks in and says it was all a 50 billion dollar joke, we are broke, thanks for all the hard work. These two items, could sum up the last 8 years in this country.

If ENRON were handled as it should have been, corporate corruption and scandal, would have likely faced the fire of discouragement it should have. Parties responsible for insuring the integrity of accounting and finance in business and finance sectors, should have been mandated to show more due dilligence in keeping things above board.

There was no apropriate response, it is extremely likely the severe financial pinch, will force untold numbers of not as reported financial and business information out in the open.

Madoff is out on bond and has a home confinement curfew. Hopefully corruption, in business or government is placed at the legal indiscression level it should have been long ago. Hopefully some of these acts are tantamout to treason, only when severe consequences face the perpetrarors, will these types of deception and outright corruption begin to lose the prominence they have found, only facing small fines, and a hand full of years of confinement possible as punnishment. " Hey fat-headbob (still wiping tears of laughter away)....

You might want to foam over this awhile:

From The BBC Sept 8 2008:

'Implode' risk

There will be no queues outside branches of Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae - quite simply because there are not any.

In fact, despite them guaranteeing or owning just under half of the entire US mortgage market, you cannot actually get a home loan from either firm.

But while they are invisible to the average borrower, the two firms are highly influential institutions and are key to the US housing market.

As one US Treasury official puts it, the two firms are "way too intertwined with everyone in the world" to fail.

Banks around the world are highly exposed to the two companies.

And, given the febrile state of markets across the world, it had become dangerous for doubts to persist about whether they were viable and would be able to keep up the payments on their massive liabilities, said the BBC's business editor Robert Peston.

Almost all US mortgage lenders, from huge financial institutions such as Citigroup to small, local banks, rely on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, looking to them for the funds they need to meet consumer demand for mortgages.

The two firms argue that they make home ownership more affordable, lowering the interest rates on the 30-year mortgages that they guarantee.

But their peculiar status has left them in a grey area between being government owned and private sector, with potential risks to the taxpayer should they need bailing out.

Close links

The rescue at Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae contrast with the recent collapse of California-based IndyMac Bank - the second-largest financial institution to fail in US history, regulators say.

IndyMac had been struggling to raise funds and stay in business in one of the states worst hit by the US housing market slump.

Without similar close links to government it could not weather the storm, and went into administration.

But it is clear that Washington wants to keep Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae alive and kicking, not least so that they can play a key role in reinvigorating the housing market.

But there is a strong consensus that the price of not intervening would be far worse.

LOL! "

Subprime's Mentors

Fannie and Freddie, the main vehicle for Clinton's multicultural housing policy, drove the explosion of the subprime housing market by buying up literally hundreds of billions of dollars in substandard loans funding loans that ordinarily wouldn't have been made based on such time-honored notions as putting money down, having sufficient income, and maintaining a payment record indicating creditworthiness.

With all the old rules out the window, Fannie and Freddie gobbled up the market. Using extraordinary leverage, they eventually controlled 90% of the secondary market mortgages. Their total portfolio of loans topped $5.4 trillion half of all U.S. mortgage lending. They borrowed $1.5 trillion from U.S. capital markets with wink, wink an "implicit" government guarantee of the debts.

This created the problem we are having today.

Unfortunately, Obama cant do much to call off the dogs now even if he wanted to do so, thanks to the very public action taken against Blagojevich ten days ago by Patrick Fitzgerald.

For Emanuel and Obama, this once again strongly suggests that the incoming administration has not yet been fully truthful about the extent of their knowledge of Blagojevichs corruption. After all, no one expected Obama and Emanuel to have no interest in Obamas replacement, and Emanuel could have said right from the start that he had spoken with Blagojevich to discuss the various options and that he either heard nothing about pay-for-play demands or that he notified the feds when he did. Whats astounding about the normally sensible Marcuss case for the Cinderella Kennedy (New York magazines phrase) is that she doesnt really make one, at least not on the merits. Marcus doesnt even bother. Its all schoolgirl gushing.

The editors of the New York Times, in a more skeptical editorial, summarized her qualifications thusly: "Ms. Kennedy has much going for her.
