Local Curves owners earn Franchisee of the Year award

MATTOON — Kelly and Sandy Spaulding, owners of Curves of Mattoon, were recently awarded Franchisee of the Year at the Annual Curves Convention in Orlando, Fla.

“In the past, you had to nominate yourself; I would never do that.” Sandy Spaulding said. “This year, your area director from Curves had to nominate you.”

This award is presented to a franchisee based on outstanding service to members and a commitment to the Curves tradition, according to a company press release.

Right before the Curves Convention, the Spauldings were told that they were a finalist, either being awarded Gold Franchisee of the Year, Bronze or Silver.

“We were absolutely thrilled to receive Gold Franchisee of the Year. This is the highest honor available as a franchisee,” Sandy Spaulding said.

The Spauldings are both natives of Mattoon. They moved to Florida in 2002 and opened three Curves in the Tampa Bay area.

“We were one of the first Curves in the area!” stated Sandy.

In 2006, the Spauldings bought the Mattoon club which has been in existence for many years. Since that time, the Spauldings have sold two of the clubs in Florida, now owning one in Florida and one in Mattoon, traveling back and forth every two weeks.

A spokesperson from Curves said this of the Spauldings: “Sandy and her husband Kelly are truly committed to following the Curves Way, and they collaborate for success with Curves International, other Curves owners, and their community. I hope they inspire every Curves owner to strive for this standard.”

Sandy said she believes in Curves.

“In fact, before owning my own Curves, I was a faithful member of the Mattoon Curves. I want to help women reach their goals and be a happy successful person. If you believe in what you do, it is easy to be successful.

“Well, actually, to be successful at any business, it is hard work and dedication. I would not have it any other way.”

The Spauldings have also been awarded Shining Star Clubs for several years. A Shining Star Club is one that has been recognized by Curves International as an elite club.

Clubs that have received this award best embody the Curves principles and provide the optimal experience for members.

“Such an award is a quite an accomplishment for Mattoon and we are very proud to share this award with our native community.” said the Spauldings.

Curves is a facility designed for women. There are more than 10,000 Curves locations worldwide. Curves of Mattoon is equipped with CurvesSmart.

CurvesSmart is a state-of-the-art personalized coaching system. Curves of Mattoon is located at 201 Richmond Ave. E., Suite 3-4.
